Progresywna energia z akustyczną psychodelią i intensywną ambientową elektroniką sprawiają, że album staje się nad wyraz intrygujący.

Nie ukrywam, że na ślad istnienia grupy O.R.k. wpadłem dopiero podczas promocji „Ramagehead”. A będąc jeszcze bardziej szczerym, przyznam, że do zapoznania się z tą muzyką skłonił mnie gościnny występ w utworze „Black Blooms” jednego z moich ulubionych wokalistów - Serja Tankiana (kultowa grupa System Of A Down). A potem zorientowałem się, że w stałym składzie O.R.k. są jeszcze inne znaczące nazwiska. Warto tu wspomnieć Colina Edwina (basista Porcupine Tree) i Pata Mastelotto (perkusista King Crimson). Poza nimi zespół tworzą wokalista Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (założyciel zespołu) i gitarzysta Carmelo Pipitone. Co również ciekawe, szatę graficzną zaprojektował Adam Jones, muzyk i grafik Toola.

Gdyby ktoś mi kazał przypisać „Ramagehead” do konkretnego gatunku, miałbym spory problem. Kryje się w tej płycie jakieś szaleństwo i oryginalność, które przykuwają uwagę poszukiwacza nieoczywistych brzmień. Sporo tu można znaleźć - rockowy hałas, delikatne skrzypce, tu i ówdzie elektronika, industrialne wkręty i parę innych rozwiązań. Muzyka jest rozdarta między spokojem i wariactwem. Wyraźnie ten konflikt zarysowuje się w imponującym sposobie śpiewania Fornasariego, który przechodzi od wibrującego zawodzenia w wysokich rejestrach do hardrockowego krzyku.

„Ramagehead” stanowi pozycję ciekawą, z którą naprawdę warto się zapoznać. Nie rzuca na kolana i nie przeczuwam, że będę do niej wracał, ale wciąga na więcej niż jedno przesłuchanie i zmusza do większej dawki uwagi.

A band comprising some of contemporary music's most revered creators, O.R.k. have combined forces once again for a new studio album and first for the ground-breaking UK label Kscope. The band are: accomplished singer and composer LEF (lead vocals), King Crimson's Pat Mastelotto (drums), Porcupine Tree's Colin Edwin (bass), Marta Sui Tubi's Carmelo Pipitone (guitars) and extra special guest Grammy Award-winner Serj Tankian of System of a Down (vocals), who is undoubtedly one of metal's greatest and most renowned vocalists.

Ramagehead is a product of the band’s collective vision, unique influences and a multi-layered reflection of their powerful and engaging live experience. The recordings, and inclusion of Serj Tankian, announces the band's serious intent to use their individual musical chemistry in exploring the hard-edged possibilities within rock. O.R.k. are also teaming up with new label-mates The Pineapple Thief as support for their European and UK tour, as well as heading on additional headline dates in February and March 2019.

The new album was written following their headline European tour in support of second studio album Soul of an Octopus and is a distillation of their live performances. The result contains all the ingredients of a fiery O.R.k. performance with dark and heavy riffing, mesmeric atmospheres and lyrics that reveal the band's bewilderment brought about by our modern world: a world of information overload, of uncertainty and post-truth messages. The track "Black Blooms" features a special collaboration and unmistakable vocals from Serj Tankian.

The mixing for Ramagehead was handled by Adrian Benavides and three-time Grammy-winning engineer Marc Urselli (U2, Foo Fighters, Nick Cave), the mastering by Michael Fossenkemper, engineering by Benavides and Bill Munyon (King Crimson), cover art by Adam Jones (TOOL) and design by Denis Rodier (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman).

To descend into the nether regions where these Death Metal acolytes dwell is to be left to fester in a desolate and fathomless realm whose landscape is filled to the brim with violent blasts, crushing mid-tempo sections, gloomy doom-ish parts and atrocious growls, rounded off with a sprinkling of eerie Finnish melodies. Reckless Manslaughter are nothing if not dependable, and across their three full-lengths to date the Germans have proudly upheld the banner of pure and total Death Metal. And thankfully, they show no signs of letting down that banner with their new opus, "Sinking into Filth". Like its album predecessors, "Sinking into Filth" is all too accurately titled, with wave after wave of world-eating riff and vocal swallowing the listener whole. Reckless Manslaughter here exude a uniquely "gloomy bounce" in their stridently surging songcraft; the energy is felt in full -usually, in the listener's chest cavity- but a paradoxically sorrowful sensation is intertwined into these judiciously compact compositions. What results is something both hypnotizing and heavy, in all senses of the world. Or, simply, this filth is fucking huge. Howlin' Sun to kolejny norweski zespół, który udowadnia, że dobry ​​rock wciąż pozostaje żywy i wciąż ma swoich ambitnych amatorów. Kwartet pochodzi z Bergen - miasta-wylęgarni młodych norweskich talentów i na swojej debiutanckiej płycie łączy elementy brytyjskiego rocka przełomu lat 60. i 70. oraz amerykańskiego gitarowego heavy rocka, co w efekcie daje blisko 40 minut klasycznie brzmiącej rockowej muzyki (rozmiary czasowe płyty to także nawiązanie do klasycznej ‘winylowej’ ery). Wokalista Tor Erik Bjelde swoim charyzmatycznym śpiewem powoduje, że słucha się go jakby był scenicznym dzieckiem Roberta Planta i Jima Morrisona, zapatrzony w Hendrixa gitarzysta Magnus Gullachsen gra niesamowicie energetyczne riffy i chropowate solówki, które osadzone są w solidnym brzmieniu sekcji rytmicznej: Torgrim Nåmdal (perkusja) i Pieter Ten Napel (gitara basowa).

W dobie mody na retro rocka oraz prawdziwego wysypu zespołów, które stylem prezentowanej przez siebie muzyki nawiązują do klasycznych brzmień sprzed 40-50 lat, grupa Howlin’ Sun posiada w sobie pewien trudny do zdefiniowania element, który sprawia, że ​​zdecydowanie wyróżnia się z tłumu. Ich kompozycje to krótkie, zazwyczaj trzyminutowe, dynamiczne, mocno osadzone w organicznym brzmieniu utwory, które mogą sugerować, że wykonuje je grupa z Zachodniego Wybrzeża Stanów, a nie z zimnej Norwegii. Sporo tu amerykańskich wpływów („Hitchhiker Of Love”, "A Little Bit Of Rain"), trochę surf rocka ("Strange Night"), klasycznego bluesa („The Day Took My Sunshine Away”) oraz rocka psychodelicznego ("Yellow Lit Road"). Zespół Howlin’ Sun w każdej nucie, w każdym takcie i w każdej frazie z premedytacją odwołuje się do brzmień sprzed lat, nie stosuje elektroniki, ani też innych współczesnych zdobyczy techniki nagraniowej, co więcej, w jego muzyce pobrzmiewa programowa niedoskonałość i pewnego rodzaju „nieuczesanie”, lecz słuchając tego debiutu nie sposób nie zwrócić uwagi na ewidentną świeżość, jaką grupa Howlin’ Sun wnosi swoim pełnym entuzjazmu graniem.

Pytanie: co dalej? Bo o ile w przypadku debiutanckiej płyty można wybaczyć młodej grupie programową wtórność i artystyczne nieuporządkowanie, to album numer 2 utrzymany w podobnym stylu może już nie spotkać się z taką przychylnością krytyków i słuchaczy...

Wokalista Tor Erik Bjelde swoim charyzmatycznym śpiewem powoduje, że słucha się go jakby był scenicznym dzieckiem Roberta Planta i Jima Morrisona, zapatrzony w Hendrixa gitarzysta Magnus Gullachsen gra niesamowicie energetyczne riffy i chropowate solówki, które osadzone są w solidnym brzmieniu sekcji rytmicznej: Torgrim Nåmdal (perkusja) i Pieter Ten Napel (gitara basowa).

W dobie mody na retro rocka oraz prawdziwego wysypu zespołów, które stylem prezentowanej przez siebie muzyki nawiązują do klasycznych brzmień sprzed 40-50 lat, grupa Howlin’ Sun posiada w sobie pewien trudny do zdefiniowania element, który sprawia, że ​​zdecydowanie wyróżnia się z tłumu. Ich kompozycje to krótkie, zazwyczaj trzyminutowe, dynamiczne, mocno osadzone w organicznym brzmieniu utwory, które mogą sugerować, że wykonuje je grupa z Zachodniego Wybrzeża Stanów, a nie z zimnej Norwegii. Pytanie: co dalej? Bo o ile w przypadku debiutanckiej płyty można wybaczyć młodej grupie programową wtórność i artystyczne nieuporządkowanie, to album numer 2 utrzymany w podobnym stylu może już nie spotkać się z taką przychylnością krytyków i słuchaczy...

Zespół Disma powstał w 2005 roku w New Jersey i początkowo istniał jako jednoosobowy projekt. Skompletowanie stałego składu i tworzenie materiału zajęło kilka lat - efektem tych starań była wydana w 2011 roku płyta "Towards the Megalith".
Album zawiera 8 potężnych deathmetalowych strzałów - Disma gra ciężki i dość klimatyczny Death Metal w wolnych i średnich tempach. Płyta jako całość bardziej mi się kojarzy z fińską sceną niż DM rodem z USA.
Ciekawe kompozycje, bardzo dobre brzmienie, brutalne i głębokie wokale - jedna z fajniejszych deathowych płyt jakie miałem ostatnio okazję słyszeć.

Vexatus


It took a while for Craig Pillard to return to death metal, but it was possible by Disma, and more specifically "Towards The Megalith". Well, the discussed disc can be safely indicated as an ideal example of how to return to the death metal after many years of "non-existence" - especially from the perspective of this dude. What's more, "Towards..." is not the only appearance of Pillard that can be proud of! In fact, the whole line-up of "veterans" managed to avoid too obvious allusions or all sentimentality, and it showed that it was possible to create an album with a monstrously massive sound and with songs that break down - like the classics. On Disma's debut, unique music was created containing an amazing, overwhelming atmosphere and which is equally captivating.

The recipe for death/doom performed by Disma is particularly interesting: it has to be heavy, straight from the crypt, but at the same time quite diverse and twisted. The most interesting advantage of this disc is the last one mentioned. Well, Americans very often turn here into regions closer to...Finnish death metal! Paces, climate, unusual design of riffs - all this immediately brings to mind the local scene at the beginning of the death metal boom. Next, patents that may be associated with Incantation and Funebrarum, there are also patents loosely related to Rippikoulu, Demigod or Abhorrence. The confirmation is the relatively slow paces (moreover, the ones with blasts have been reduced to a minimum), a lot of lows (which can also be heard after tuning the guitars), Craig's cadaverous, low growl and the well-distorted atmosphere. Putting it into songs - they all deserve a mention. Narrowing down, "Chaos Apparition", "Vault Of Membros" (with an almost funeral doom metal introduction), "Of A Past Forlorn" or - above all! - "Chasm Of Oceanus" (ultra-hit), which if they don't move someone, there is really no point in starting the rest of the album (or listening to this style in general). Because in the case of "Towards The Megalith" it's just impossible to listen to it indifferently - each of the tracks makes a great impression.

Disma's debut is therefore a disc thought out in every inch and on every level. It shows a different approach to classics (including the previously mentioned Incantation), it boasts excellent compositions and a perfect, stuffy atmosphere. It turned out so attractive that Americans in the following yeras of their activity with "Towards The Megalith" reached the wall...

This album ranks up there as one of the greatest death metal albums of all time for me. Why? Because this album has all the right ingredients. Really sick and low tuned guitars, thunderous bass and Craig Pillard on vocals. Who could ask for anything more? For those of you who don't know Pillard sang for Incantation in the 90's and has done other bands and projects in the last 30 years. He's top 5 in the list of greatest death metal singers ever no doubt. King Kong must have gifted Craig with his voice honestly. And that's why anybody that hears his voice would agree that it's beyond words how powerful his voice is. And even to this day he still sounds great. Not easy to do as you get older but he's solid as a rock.

The music on this album is a great mix of slow and fast riffs and some quick time changes here and there which really makes the songs interesting. You have a few songs that are over 6 minutes long but yet those songs don't feel like they are that long. They really do an amazing job on crafting a song that takes you all over the place with some really great riffs by guitarists Bill Venner and Daryl Kahan. The best songs in my opinion are 'Chasm Of Oceanus', 'Lost In The Burial Fog' and the title song. They all have the best arrangements and they hook you in with the mix of doom and speed all flowing together wonderfully. Great lyrics too that are dark and somewhat poetic but they work nicely.

The title track has one of the greatest endings in my book. They hit one note that rings out and the drums do a tribal beat and it's so amazing when they play this song in a live show. It's the perfect way to end a show it is like a grand finale. That one note is so strong it's amazing. It proves that you don't have to have a million notes in a song. It's probably one of the greatest death metal songs that you'll ever hear in my book. There is some slight technical playing on this album with the arrangements when the tempo shifts quite quickly in some parts. But yet you can remember the songs easily that's the best part.

The production is great the guitars are huge on this album. Every instrument you can hear clearly and everything is mixed properly. And Craig Pillard's vocals are so big that it engulfs you very easily. They put some great echo on his voice that really does it justice. When he lets out one of his long winded growls it's frightening. It's so amazing to hear how strong his voice is. No vocal effects here ladies and gentlemen...this is the real thing. There's some singers that get close to Pillard but he's king of the mountain. He sings a lot of the words slowly instead of quickly and it's great. You can understand them if you pay attention close enough.

If you're a fan of old school death metal there's no reason you shouldn't own this album. This is one of the best things ever created in these last 35 years of extreme metal my friends...don't miss out. This will satisfy your tastes in every way no doubt.

To nie pierwsze koncertowe wydawnictwo Blues Pills, ale z pewnością najlepsze.

Występy live to jeden z największych, jeśli nie największy atut Blues Pills, choć akurat na brak atutów ta nad wyraz utalentowana, międzynarodowa ekipa zdecydowanie nie może narzekać. Nic dziwnego, że pierwszą koncertową epkę "Live At Rockpalast" kwartet wydał jeszcze przed debiutanckim albumem, uwiecznił też jeden z festiwalowych występów promujących pierwszy ze studyjnych krążków "Blues Pills". Jednak to wraz z jego następcą, wydanym w ubiegłym roku i doskonale przyjętym "Lady in Gold" akcje zespołu zyskały na tyle, by wyprzedać na przykład liczącą 1200 miejsc paryską salę Le Trianon. To właśnie tu zarejestrowano pierwsze w karierze Blues Pills koncertowe DVD.

"Live in Paris" to autentyczny wulkan energii. Wehikuł czasu, który przenosi widza wprost w epokę flower-power. I skrócona lekcja poglądowa na temat tego, jak grać dziś vintage czy psychodeliczny rock na najwyższym poziomie. Obawiam się jednak, że nawet cały semestr intensywnych lekcji wielu innym kapelom by nie pomógł, bo przecież to właśnie Blues Pills mają za mikrofonem Elin Larsson - frontwoman idealną, pod każdym względem najlepszą na całej retro scenie. Elin wspaniale śpiewa, prezencją wpisuje się doskonale w obraną stylistykę, a na scenie rusza się tak energicznie, jakby właśnie uczestniczyła w treningu z Chodakowską. Podejrzewam, że większość widzów tego koncertu, po takiej dawce skoków byłaby blisko pilnej potrzeby sięgnięcia po defibrylator. Tymczasem Elin bez trudu i zadyszki wyciąga każdą wokalną górkę. Jakby tego wszystkiego było mało, "I Felt a Change" wykonała samodzielnie, akompaniując sobie na organach. Tytułowa 'Pani w złocie' to synonim śmierci, ale to w końcu wokalistka jest w tym składzie największym złotym samorodkiem.

Na tle Szwedki reszta składu, wzmocnionego na potrzeby koncertu piątym muzykiem - Rickardem Nygrenem, odpowiedzialnym za gitarę i organy, nie musi już silić się na szczególną żywiołowość. Co zresztą nie byłoby także łatwe, bo choćby taki Dorian Sorriaux, nawet występując na rodzimej ziemi ani myśli pozować na gitarowego, uwielbianego przez tłumy herosa. A przecież skromny, wręcz nieśmiały Dorian dysponuje naprawdę solidnym talentem, a zarazem naturalnym wyczuciem stylistyki, którego nie można po prostu się nauczyć.

Cały koncert, podczas którego kapela wykonała "Lady in Gold" niemal w całości, został doskonale zrealizowany. I to poczynając od pierwszych ujęć, gdy zespół wkracza na scenę. Do klimatu retro dopasowano nawet czcionkę i układ graficzny napisów początkowych. Montaż jest dynamiczny, ale bez zbędnych fajerwerków, nadmiernego wygładzania brzmienia i plastiku w obrazie, który tylko wzmacniałby wrażenie nierzeczywistości oglądanych scen.

A jeśli cyfrowy format "Live in Paris" miałby niektórym fanom przeszkadzać we właściwym odbiorze tej retro sztuki, Nuclear Blast ma na to odpowiedź w postaci kilku wersji edycji winylowej, w tym rzecz jasna i złotej. Są tacy, którzy nade wszystko przedkładają widok obracającego się na talerzu winylowego placka, zapewniam jednak, że Elin wraz z kolegami potrafią sprawić, że na czas oglądania przychylniej spojrzy się na telewizor.
