Book One of the Well-Tempered Clavier is performed on the piano while Book Two is performed on the harpsichord. His tempos are very fast, and he has a certain sense of humor that comes through in all his performances, making what might seem academic, warm and accessible. Highly recommended - and check out Jarrett's other classical recordings for other delights just as great.

I am a professional organist and am well versed in Baroque performance practices and stylistic specificities. As such, I have performed tons of Bach.

Jarrett's version is the best I have ever heard. I have even stolen some aspects of his interpretation and added them to my own. Some have commented that it was muddy, uninspired, contains errors. I disagree on all counts. I am most puzzled by the claim that there are errors. I play much of the WTC myself and I heard no errors.

I am most annoyed by people who over-interpret Bach as if each performer has a right to own him. Why doesn't this attitude exist for other composers as well? I don't understand. Jarrett sticks to what is on the page (with only the most minor contextually justifiable exceptions, unlike most other performers) and for this alone Jarrett deserves praise. This tells us Bach lovers that Jarrett trusts Bach's notes to do the work. I get the feeling from a lot of other performers that they do not trust Bach since they feel the need to do so much interpretataion.

I found Jarrett's version to be clear and penetrating. I enjoyed his tempos all told more than any other version I can think of. And there was just enough romantic emotionalism to remain within the scale of Baroque practice. Bach, throughout his music, displayed the capacity to render a wide variety of emotion. This fact I don't need to belabor to his fans. And Jarret does a fine job varying the styles of each prelude and fugue to reveal this often ignored side of Bach.

Keith Jarrett is such a fine musician that he, as a composer as well as a performer and a jazz interpreter as well as a classics interpreter, knows when to simply let the written notes be played the way they were written. His Bach is very straightforward: yes, he embellishes in keeping with the indications and musical period of Bach, but he never lets the embellishments sound as though they should call attention to the performer. Book One of the Well-Tempered Clavier is performed on the piano while Book Two is performed on the harpsichord. For this listener his piano keyboard Bach is more interesting than his Harpsichord Bach and I'm not at all certain why he elected to change instruments. But perhaps that is simply one more aspect of Jarrett's exploration of works he deems important enough to spend his concentration and time reproducing.

One of the pleasures of Jarrett's playing is his knowledge of how to bring a phrase to a close and for that matter how he prepares for the closing of a variation. It feels right, as though he has thought about Bach's ideas and incorporated them into his own manner of performing. Both of these 2CD albums are very well recorded and make a solid addition to the library: piano keyboard Bach or harpsichord keyboard Bach - both make for repeated frequent listenings.

Le Concert Spirituel was essentially a Parisian concert series held at the Tuileries Palace, begun in 1725 as an opportunity for musical performances during Lent and other Holy Days when secular musical activities like opera were forbidden. The concerts continued until 1790, just after the beginning of the French Revolution. The music of French composers filled most of the programs, but German and Italian music was occasionally heard, and this CD includes five pieces by Corelli, Telemann, and Rameau that were known to have been played at the concerts. Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations, one of the many stellar ensembles he is responsible for founding, play these works with such surging vibrancy that anyone who thinks of the Baroque as a period of stiff formality would be disabused of that notion on hearing these performances.

The Suite from the opera-ballet Les Indes galantes, by Rameau, the most forward-looking of the three composers, is a terrific example of how Baroque music can be dignified and at the same time light-hearted to the point of being humorous. The performers play it with obvious delight in its droll depictions of "exotic" foreign cultures and with appropriately flamboyant abandon. The Overture to Telemann's Suite in E minor for two flutes and strings is an example of the exceptional sophistication and musicality Savall and his ensemble bring to the music. Their close attention to the movement of the music is evident in the subtle variations in tempo that give it such a buoyant grace. Throughout, the musicians play with affectionate care and attentiveness to the shape and direction of each phrase. It practically goes without saying that this group's tone quality is impeccable and full, and that the players listen to each other so carefully that the balance is always beautiful and the ensemble seems to breathe as a single organism. Savall is an agile and sonorous soloist in the Telemann Suite in D for viola da gamba and strings. As is the case with all its releases, Alia Vox's hybrid SACD is beautifully produced and the sound is clean, with a springy liveliness.

After having spent the the mid-'80s putting on his acting shoes for Absolute Beginners and Labyrinth, Bowie returned to music by grabbing his usual henchmen Carlos Alomar and Carmine Rojas and joining forces with old schoolmate Peter Frampton.

NEVER LET ME DOWN found Bowie writing or co-writing everything with the exception of Iggy Pop's "Bang Bang." Songs such as "Day-In Day-Out" and "Time Will Crawl" were perfect Bowie songs that worked opposite ends of the spectrum; the everyday reality of a struggling woman living on the periphery of society versus the ambiguity of time itself.

Although the creamy synths and slick production are occasional reminders that NLMD was cut in the '80s, these flourishes work especially well on "Zeroes" and the title track. The only hint of indulgence comes in the semi-mythical "Glass Spider" and the rap duet vignette with Mickey Rourke (!) that Bowie drops into the middle of "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)." After that chilling encounter, Bowie fled the solo life for the safer confines of Tin Machine in 1989.

Following the enormous success of the vibrant and upbeat LET'S DANCE, David Bowie's follow-up TONIGHT was a slicker yet more enigmatic-sounding collection. Full of synthesizers and polite Arif Mardin arrangements, this record allowed Bowie to indulge himself, even if that meant not putting out LET'S DANCE II.

Three songs were resurrected from the '70s Iggy Pop catalog and another newer one was co-written with Pop ("Dancing With The Big Boys.") A 1977 Pop song was used as the title track, on which Bowie duetted with Tina Turner (who was in the middle of a comeback herself) and turned it into a reggae-flavored love song. Elsewhere, the Thin White Duke paid tribute to the Beach Boys by covering "God Only Knows" and scored a hit with "Blue Jean."

Who mastermind Pete Townshend's strongest solo record was born in a hailstorm of despair, uncertainty, and tribulation. With the once viscerally powerful Who in limbo, the guitarist nearly sunk himself into brandy-drenched oblivion. He emerged with one of his most gripping solo pieces and--perhaps unsurprisingly--the most Who-like album of all his solo work.

Pete plunges into his familiar themes of aging, sexuality, and spiritual decay with fervor, desperation, and commitment. And while EMPTY GLASS does not approach the roaring physicality of the Who at its best, the emotional punch of "Jools and Jim" and "I Am an Animal" is sure to rattle the cage of even the most ardent hard rock devotee. Also of note are Townshend's vocals. Through the entire album, whether on the radio-ready paean to Meher Baba "Let My Love Open the Door," the bracing "Rough Boys," or the sublime "A Little Is Enough," his vocals are hanging on the edge of a cliff, presumably dangling over a certain death.

Samuel Scheidt (baptized November 3, 1587 – March 24, 1653) was a German composer, organist and teacher of the early Baroque era. Samuel Scheidt published 4 collections entitled Ludi Musici between 1621 & 1627, whereas only the first publication (from which the present program is taken) survives complete. Scheidt continues to be the most significant of the early North German instrumental composers.

Scheidt’s Ludi Musici – of which only the first of four collections from between 1621 and 1627 survives complete – … is a mouth-wateringly diverse and inventive mixture of dance, canzona and variation, distilled from the fount of English genres as they had become disseminated. These are works which brim over with character and nonchalantly brilliant craftsmanship.

Following on from their glorious and lyrical collaborative work on Gone To Earth, David Sylvian and Robert Fripp produced the unexpectedly fiery and funky The First Day in 1993.

Hypnotically groovy and intensely vicious, while showcasing Fripp's Soundscapes identity, the album marked a departure for Sylvian and can be more easily understood as a missing King Crimson link between Three Of A Perfect Pair and Thrak than a typical post-Japan Sylvian venture.


Robert Fripp and David Sylvian's first official release together, The First Day, is a much funkier and more percussive affair than its bootleg predecessor, The Day Before (which contained radically different versions of these songs). An obvious reason for its higher quality is that it was recorded in a studio, while the bootleg consisted of in-concert demos, and the songs here have been worked to completion. Fripp has found an extremely talented singer/partner in Sylvian, who adds a lot to his quirky compositions.

Trey Gunn (who plays a bass-like instrument called the stick) makes each track practically groove and breathe on his own, and allows Fripp to stretch out and experiment in ways previously unheard by this guitar icon. The First Day is a very consistent album, with the musician's excitement and energy easily being felt on such tracks as "God's Monkey," "Brightness," and the ten-minute tour de force "Firepower." Other lengthy tracks follow (the 11-minute "20th Century Dreaming" and the 17-minute "Darshan"), but it never becomes self-indulgent or boring. Certainly one of Robert Fripp's best and more inspired King Crimson side projects.

Recorded on the "Road to Graceland '93" tour at London's Albert Hall. This followed the release of the album The First Day and is considered by many to be superior to its studio counterpart. Originally mixed by Robert Fripp and released in September 1994 it was remixed by David in 2000 and released the following year. The band features Trey Gunn and Michael Brook. Produced, engineered and mixed by David Sylvian at Samachi Sound NH, USA May 2001. New artwork by Shinro Ohtake. Every Colour You Are is now listed in the American way: Every Color You Are. David replaced Darshan with Jean The Birdman, as he believed that this track would fit in better with the rest.

Damage was recorded at the final London concerts in December 1993 and issued in 1994. Whereas the studio album had a measured grace and power, the live album was even more muscular on the rock pieces, drawing some extraordinary performances from all contributors. This made the contrast with the quieter, more ambient material even more pronounced, with audiences able to hear every nuance of the material. David Sylvian had rarely sounded better or more comfortable in a live setting. Robert Fripp provided some of his most blistering solos. Songs from the recent studio album were featured as were fan favourites from David's solo albums and Rain Tree Crow, alongside one new song The First Day. Initially released as a limited edition in 1994, the album quickly sold out and became a highly sought after recording. The album was remixed by David Sylvian and issued in 2001 with a slightly altered track-listing and running order.

With a well-received studio album in the form of The First Day issued in summer 1993, Sylvian/Fripp took to the road for a lengthy tour to support the release. Trey Gunn reprised his role from the earlier tour and studio recordings as stick player, while Pat Mastelotto joined the group on drums, a position which led to his being offered a role in the 1990s King Crimson, a band in which he has remained a member of every line-up since. Producer and recordings artist Michael Brook completed the touring ensemble.
