417 previously unreleased live performances! 'Very limited'

Sony are to release The 1974 Live Recordings a massive 27-disc box set that features all professionally recorded shows from Bob Dylan and The Band’s 1974 tour.

The box set offers fans 417 previously unreleased live tracks – including 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape, and every single surviving soundboard recording.

In 1974 Dylan toured live for the first time in eight years and reunited with The Band, who since they last performed live together (in 1966) had released six albums and played Woodstock and recorded with Bob (The Basement Tapes, Planet Waves).

Dylan and The Band performed 30 dates in 42 days (often playing two sets per day) and recordings were captured on a stereo soundboard mix, on both quarter-inch tape and cassette. By tour’s end, Asylum Records’ David Geffen had commissioned recordings on multi-track tape, for eventual release on Before the Flood. The 1974 Live Recordings includes it all of these and the shows that were recorded on 16-track tape are newly-mixed for this box set, which comes with with new sleeve notes by Elizabeth Nelson.

Ślepy nabój to nie jest. Pocisk o silnym rażeniu również. Tytuł jest jak komenda wydawana plutonowi egzekucyjnemu, lecz nie czuję się rozstrzelany. Może trochę posiniaczony, niczym po strzale z pistoletu na gumowe kulki.

Są w muzycznym show-biznesie rzeczy dla mnie nieodgadnione. Wciąż nie wiem, jak to możliwe, że tylu ciekawych artystów wypruwa sobie żyły, a nie udaje im się osiągnąć komercyjnego sukcesu, mimo posiadanego komercyjnego potencjału, a inni pojawiają się niczym strzały znikąd i mieszają na listach. Bullet For My Valentine to w tym kontekście dobry przykład. Amerykanie zaliczają ich do melodyjnego metalcore'a. Niech im będzie. Ale najbardziej zaskakujące jest to, że w czasach, gdy nawet Adam Dutkiewicz z Killswitch Engage zapowiedział zmierzch gatunku, zespołowi udało się wtargnąć na listę "Billboardu" i sprzedać w USA blisko 400 tys. płyt (na całym świecie poszło ponad milion egzemplarzy!). Coś takiego zdarzyło się w przypadku debiutanckiego krążka Walijczyków, "The Poison". Tak, nie pomyliłem się, Walijczyków! Sam miałem wielkie oczy, gdy po zapoznaniu się z twórczością zespołu, okazało się, że jest ona autorstwa czterech kolesi z małej walijskiej mieściny w ojczyźnie Toma Jonesa. Bullet For My Valentine brzmi bowiem bardzo amerykańsko i może tu kryje się klucz do sukcesu. Z pewnością nie jest bez znaczenia fakt, że metalcore w ich wykonaniu jest taki… bezpieczny. To chyba najlepsze określenie. "Wygładzony", też nieźle pasuje. Jest szybko, dynamicznie, bardzo melodyjnie, wokalista czasami krzyknie. Nie za często i nie za długo. Na wyrachowanie są chyba jeszcze za młodzi i za mało doświadczeni, więc pewnie taką muzę czują i taką chcą grać.

Na "Scream Aim Fire" znajdziemy wszystkie składniki, które dały Walijczykom sukces kilka lat temu. Jest może nieco szybciej, w piosenki wkomponowano troszkę więcej melodyjnych solówek, które jasno wskazują, że gitarzysta Padge kochał się kiedyś w Iron Maiden i Metallice, wokalista czysto śpiewa (jest w zestawie ckliwa balladka), czasem przypomina, że potrafi również się drzeć. Wszystko brzmi co najmniej tak dobrze, jak debiut, co nie powinno dziwić, skoro produkcją ponownie zajął się Colin Richardson (m.in. Machine Head, Slipknot, Trivium, Cradle Of Filth, Fear Factory), czyli spec wysokiej próby. Czy to wystarczy, aby przebić debiut? Nie wydaje mi się. Jednak tyle razy w ostatnich latach byłem zaskakiwany, że równie dobrze może to przytrafić się po raz kolejny. Słowa noblistki, że nic dwa razy się nie zdarza, nie do każdej sytuacji dają się zastosować. Zwłaszcza w muzycznym show-biznesie.

Osobista wycieczka na koniec. Lat temu ileś tam, pewien znajomy, ekspert od punk rocka, uświadamiał mnie, czym jest college punk, za przykłady podając m.in. Green Day, Rancid czy NOFX. Jak słuchałem muzyki BFMV to przyszło mi na myśl określenie "college'owy metalcore". Na walentynki prezentu w postaci ich płyty nie chciałbym dostać, ale gdybym miał ukochaną w wieku college'owym, to być może sprezentowałbym jej "Scream Aim Fire" na święto zakochanych. Choć nie ma gwarancji, że po tym z siłą pocisku artyleryjskiego nie walnęłaby mnie w łeb.

Jest to jedyny krążek tego 'śmiesznego' zespołu, który jestem w stanie wysłuchać od początku do końca z niekłamaną przyjemnością... Takie 'harcerskie' granie.

Jak słuchałem muzyki BFMV to przyszło mi na myśl określenie "college'owy metalcore". Na walentynki prezentu w postaci ich płyty nie chciałbym dostać, ale gdybym miał ukochaną w wieku college'owym, to być może sprezentowałbym jej "Scream Aim Fire" na święto zakochanych. Choć nie ma gwarancji, że po tym z siłą pocisku artyleryjskiego nie walnęłaby mnie w łeb.

Nowa, limitowana, europejska edycja wydanego w 1970 roku przez Mercury, znakomitego albumu pochodzącej z Cleveland formacji (albo grupie towarzyszącej gitarzyście/wokaliście), będącego jedną z najciekawszych i najbardziej porywających pozycji z kręgu ciężkiego psychodelicznego rocka (ze szczyptą amerykańskiego folku w dwóch nagraniach). Wypełniająca drugą część płyty (TUTAJ PRZESUNIĘTA NA POCZĄTEK) i składająca się z pięciu oddzielnych części 23-minutowa suita ('Blue Cheer na sterydach spotyka wczesny, bardziej progresywny Grand Funk') jest po-wa-la-ją-ca!

Kapitalne, chwytliwe melodie, atakujące z wdziękiem gitary i bardzo gęste, obłędne bębnienie - to część atutów tego niemal hardrockowego majstersztyku! Pozostałe pięć nagrań (oryginalnie wypełniających pierwszą stronę winylu) stało na podobnym poziomie, choć emocji może było nieco mniej. Dodatkowo zamieszczono dwa bardzo rzadkie utwory (jeden świetny, drugi taki sobie...) singlowe z 1969 roku. Limitowany, trwający 78 minut europejski CD zawierający radiowe nagrania jednej z najlepszych brytyjskich grup z początku lat 70-tych, grających ciężkiego rocka. Przede wszystkim płytka zawiera pięć nagrań w doskonałej jakości, zarejestrowanych dla radia BBC w 1970-1971 roku (w tym dwa utwory w składzie z Carlem Palmerem i Johnem Cannem). Uwaga! Nagrania z BBC po raz pierwszy brzmią poprawnie, gdyż okazało się, że wcześniejsze wersje (wydane m.in. na CD "Devil's Answer" wytwórni Hux oraz nagrania dodatkowe na reedycjach pierwszych dwóch CD wytwórni Sanctuary) brzmiały zdecydowanie za wolno (kilka z nich można znaleźć na YouTube i porównać) - tak wolno, że nie dało się ich słuchać! Teraz wszystkie pięć pierwszych kompozycji brzmi doskonale!

Poza tym CD zawiera sześć kawałków (w tym 13-minutowy "I Can't Take No More") również nagranych na żywo (1970-1971) w studio dla TV Bremen - również z perfekcyjnym dźwiękiem. Na koniec dodano trzy nagrania z koncertu dla radia BBC z 1970 roku (jeszcze z Carlem Palmerem), w nieco gorszej, ale akceptowalnej jakości. Od początku do końca jest to wspaniała płyta - równie dobra (jak nie lepsza) co klasyczny "Death Walks Behind You"!

Miażdżacy debiutancki album szwedzkiego kwartetu grającego ekstremalny death/grind!!!

W składzie muzycy SPAWN OF POSSESSION, TORCHBEARER, SCAR SYMMETRY, VOMITOUS!


Quest of Aidance is one of several Swedish 'supergroups' involving the ubiquitous Christian Älvestam, who might best be known for fronting the earlier Scar Symmetry albums, but has kept quite busy in a number of high grade projects like Miseration and The Few Against Many. His partners in Propaganda include Miseration stringer Christian Lundgren and Daniel 'Daaz', a vocalist from a number of underground acts, with Älvestam handling most of the rhythm section and, frankly, bewildering us with the level of finesse and power he exhibits. It wouldn't be a stretch to claim that Misanthropic Propaganda, along with The Few Against Many's debut Sot, is one of the best things he's been involved with, and its fragile balance of concussive aggression and ear-clinging melodies are sure to place it on the shopping lists of forward-thinking metallers who won't shy away from its hybrid ideas.

Possibly the best way to describe this is as a mix of melodic, modernist death/grind with progressive metal elements that largely shine through the lead sequences and the placement of synthesizers. Very much based on propulsive, choppy and varied riff sets that spread themselves equally across mutated, hyper d-beats, blasting and grooves that will leave you broken in their wake. Initially I felt like comparing this to Czech cult heroes Lykathea Aflame, but this isn't so much that level of mystical miasma, but finds its roots in a lot of the project's Swedish forebears. The sense of rampant melody here is not restrained to simply death metal worship, but you'll also hear a lot of battering ram tremolo progressions redolent of groups like Dissection or Lord Belial. In fact, I might ultimately dub this an evolutionary median between Dissection and the post-Nasum outfit Coldworker, only Quest of Aidance are far, far riffier than the latter, and bring a greater degree of variation to their writing. Few paces are retread, and there's almost no sense of guessing what will happen next over the 14 tracks, which seem to follow an apocalyptic, science fiction concept with bludgeoning enthusiasm.

If you hate all things polished, then the production of this record is unlikely to change that perception, with a high level of clarity running through the intense and tight drumming, guitar phrases and vocals. But I will promise that the grooves are delivered with all the bounce and nuance you'd expect out of any comparable post-nu sort of sound, and some of the shorter thrashing notes are emphasized by a great deal of punch in the rhythm guitar. Occasionally, they'll unleash a pretty typical passage, especially over the D-beat drums, but there simply isn't one of the cuts among these that doesn't have something going for it, and just the raw musicianship alone makes it worth hearing. Bass lines take a nose dive through most of the album, simply unable to stand out past the considerable dynamics of the guitars, but the drumming is an impeccable blend of everything you might enjoy in modern extremity. Vocals are not a forte; a fairly average sampling of gutturals and higher pitched snarls that rebound across the music's dystopian ceiling, but they're spat out with enough certainty and vitriol that they blend in seamlessly with what the Swedes have set out to achieve.

For me, though, the highlights have to be the brilliant lead and melodies, like the intro to "Section 34", that instantly raise Misanthropic Propaganda above the din of most modern death/grind I've listened to. Keys can come off slightly cheesy, or simply atmospheric (like the build of the intro "A New Storm Rising"), but even at their most glaring, I never found them too intrusive. Just 'proggy', if that makes sense. This is not a band afraid to enchant you one moment, and then pulverize you the next, and all without the annoyance of clean and whiny emo-vocal choruses like you'd expect from some trending deathcore/metalcore band, who might also test the waters with such a vast array of influences. This commitment to accessibility, at no expense to the inherent hostility of the genres in which they toil, is very likely to impress a broad berth of fans who follow any number of styles, and let's be honest...not a lot of bands can do that without seeming as if they've bitten off more than they chew. Quest of Aidance naturalize all of this cross-pollenization to the point that, without my background of listening to extreme metal for so long, I would never have known the difference. Misanthropic Propaganda does have a few surface flaws, but ultimately it's an exciting record with enough character and versatility to take the band anywhere it chooses to journey.
