Nawet, jeśli proces nagrywania w studio jest najbardziej istotny w tworzeniu muzyki, nadal moją ulubioną częścią jest pisanie tego materiału. Niezmiennie układam riffy w domu z tym samym starym sznytem. To samo z tekstami. Najbardziej inspiruje mnie pierwsza fala black metalu.

IMMORTAL are back, the original grim and icy masters of Blashyrkh. "War against all" is a strong statement that the band is still full of passion for what they do and stand for: Heavy black metal between rage and majestic mid-tempo. The album is like the best of all ages from the band's history exceeding all releases since their monumental masterpiece "At the Heart of Winter". "Nordlandihr", an epic instrumental, is the most unusual track, "No Sun" or "Wargod" more standard to check the album.



Finally, new Immortal. And they delivered exactly what I was hoping for. Not too aggressive, cold and sharp black metal with decent epicness added. War Against All is full of memorable songs and varied enough to keep it interesting. A very good addition to Immortal's discography.



Less angry but just as irate, Demonaz shows he still has plenty of Immortal in him and he's feeling a bit better about all that's past, but still wants to blaze a trail or blistering frost moving forward. Favorite track: Return To Cold.

28 marca 1973 roku ukazała się pierwsza płyta Led Zeppelin o konkretnym tytule. Od początku album wzbudzał wiele kontrowersji wśród krytyków, którzy zarzucali zespołowi odejście od kierunku, który obrał - od hard rocka. Jednak fani byli innego zdania i do 1999 roku płyta rozeszła się w 11 milionach egzemplarzy.

Większość utworów została zarejestrowana w Stargroves, gdzie zespół odbywał próby. Płytę otwiera szybki i wesoły "The Song Remains The Same". Znakomita gra Jimmy'ego, wokal Roberta oraz podkład Jonesa i Bonhama, którzy tworzyli najlepszą sekcję rytmiczną na świecie. Tekst opowiada o podróżach i miejscach, w których przebywał zespół. Naprawdę fajny, hardrockowy kawałek z mocno wyeksponowanym basem. Następny jest "The Rain Song". Bluesowy, nastrojowy utwór, w którym główną rolę odgrywa melotron Jonesa. Wspaniały klimat. Trzeci na płycie jest "Over The Hills And Far Away", kawałek idealny na "pudło". Jones prezentuje tu intrygującą partię na klawesynie, jednak główną rolę odgrywa podkład rozpisany na gitarę elektryczną i akustyczną. Kolejny numer, "The Crunge", jest żartem i nie należy traktować go poważnie. Ten kawałek szybko się nudzi i jest najsłabszy na płycie. Następne w kolejności jest "Dancing Days" z typowym, "powiewającym" wschodnim klimatem, riffem Page'a. Później czas na reggae. "D'yer Mak'er" - bo o nim mowa - to kawałek z fajnym, skocznym riffem i wolną, nastrojową solówką. Kawałek popularny, jednak nie jest pamiętany, chyba że względu na swój dziwny tytuł. Wreszcie dochodzimy do punktu kulminacyjnego płyty: "No Quarter". Utwór ponadczasowy, wielokrotnie nagrywany przez innych artystów (polecam wersję Toola). Muzyczna wizytówka Jonesa, z solówką na pianinie - choć moim zdaniem bardziej interesujące jest solo Page'a - z wspaniałym, zniekształconym wokalem Planta oraz z tekstem opowiadającym o najeździe Wikingów na bezbronne miasto. Najlepszy Zespół Świata potwierdza, że w każdej piosence potrafi stworzyć wspaniały klimat. Ostatnim kawałkiem jest "The Ocean", zadedykowany fanom zespołu. Ostry, hardrockowy riff oraz wokal są najlepszą wizytówką tego utworu. Tekst Planta opowiada o "oceanie głów", jaki widać ze sceny podczas koncertów. Obok "D'yer Mak'er", "No Quarter" i "The Song Remains The Same" - najlepszy kawałek na płycie.

Ten album to klasyka (jak zresztą każda płyta Zeppelinów), a utwory "The Song Remains The Same" oraz "No Quarter" weszły na stałe do repertuaru granego przez zespół na koncertach. Polecam każdemu, szczególnie na zimowe, mroźne wieczory.

Forever



Piąty album Led Zeppelin różni się od poprzednich. Chociażby ze względu na tytuł, nie będący kolejną cyfrą lub ciągiem tajemniczych symboli, a po prostu tytułem jednego z utworów nagranych podczas sesji. Inna sprawa, że kompozycja "Houses of the Holy" ostatecznie na album nie trafiła (znalazła się dopiero na następnym longplayu, "Physical Graffiti"). W każdym razie był to pierwszy normalny tytuł w dyskografii zespołu. Ale to nie jedyna zmiana. Poważną metamorfozę przeszła również sama muzyka. Już poprzednie dwa albumy, "Led Zeppelin III" i "IV" świadczyły o tym, że muzycy mają znacznie większe ambicje, niż granie przez całą karierę ciężkiego blues rocka, od jakiego zaczynali. Na wspomnianych albumach doszły wpływy folkowe, więcej grania o charakterze akustycznym. Na "Houses of the Holy" muzycy idą o krok dalej, poszerzając granice swojego stylu o nowe, jeszcze bardziej zaskakujące inspiracje. Zarazem jednak niemal całkiem zrywając ze swoimi korzeniami.

Muzyków chyba trochę już zmęczyło ciężkie granie, bo już otwierający album utwór "The Song Remains the Same" na tle wcześniejszych dokonań Led Zeppelin wyróżnia się łagodniejszym brzmieniem, choć braku energii nie można mu zarzucić. Zwraca uwagę bardziej dojrzała gra instrumentalistów, za to dość irytująco wypada wysoka partia wokalna Roberta Planta. Już drugi na płycie "The Rain Song" to ballada, oparta na brzmieniu gitary akustycznej i melotronu. Całkiem urokliwa, lecz nieco przydługa. "Over the Hills and Far Away" z początku również oparty jest na akustycznym brzmieniu, ale po chwili nabiera ciężaru. Hardrockowym brzmieniem charakteryzują się jeszcze tylko "Dancing Days" i "The Ocean". Reszta albumu ma bardziej eksperymentalny charakter. Zespół zaskakuje zupełnie nieoczekiwanymi wpływami - funku ("The Crunge") i reggae ("D'yer Mak'er"). Urozmaica to album, ale niekoniecznie podnosi jego poziom. Za to rewelacyjnie wypada lekko jazzujący "No Quarter", intrygujący niesamowitym klimatem, tworzonym głównie przez Johna Paula Jonesa na elektrycznym i akustycznym pianinie, oraz syntetycznym basie. Są tu też świetne, dość nietypowe gitarowe Jimmy'ego Page'a i bardziej stonowany śpiew Planta. Fantastyczny utwór, jeden z najlepszych w dorobku Led Zeppelin.

"Houses of the Holy" zespół stracił swoją młodzieńczą energię, ale za to zaprezentował bardziej dojrzały materiał, który broni się nie gorzej, niż jego wcześniejsze dokonania.

Po wydaniu „wielkiej czwórki” - że nadam takie miano pierwszym czterem albumom grupy, gdyż w pełni na to zasługują - i zdobyciu sławy, Led Zeppelin mogło pozwolić sobie na chwilę oddechu, a tym samym na nagranie czegoś lżejszego, mniej zobowiązującego i bardziej fantazyjnego. Owocem pracy zespołu stało się wydawnictwo Houses of the Holy, pierwsze, na którym znalazły się tylko i wyłącznie utwory autorstwa Led Zeppelin, bardzo nierówna płyta, na której obok kompozycji udanych znajdują się również bardzo słabe.

Najlepsze kawałki z tego albumu to rozpoczynający płytę The Song Remains the Same, a zwłaszcza następujący po nim The Rain Song oraz przedostatni, No Quarter, w którym roli Johna Paula Jonesa przecenić nie sposób. Pierwszy z tych utworów to dobre, mocne otwarcie albumu, z pierwszorzędnymi gitarami Jimmy’ego Page’a, lecz i dziwnym, nieszczególnie dobrze brzmiącym wokalem Roberta Planta, który niekiedy brzmi tak, jakby starał się imitować śpiew aktora teatru chińskiego. Zresztą na całej tej płycie Plant śpiewał praktycznie co utwór inaczej. Melotronowy The Rain Song, najdłuższy numer na płycie, jest aż nadto patetyczny, sentymentalny i nostalgiczny, niemniej jest to naprawdę udana kompozycja, jedna z najlepszych w dorobku Zeppelinów. Takim też utworem, ale od The Rain Song jeszcze lepszym, jest naprawdę piękny No Quarter, z syntezatorowymi dźwiękami najwyższej próby, pianinem, przerobionym brzmieniem basu, oraz z ciężką i wspaniałą gitarą Page’a, która z pewnością inspirowała kolejne pokolenia gitarzystów (udany cover tego arcydzieła zaprezentował Tool na Salival). I śpiew Planta, niekiedy jakby zza szyby czy spod wody, brzmi dobrze, no a do perkusji Johna Bonhama jak zwykle nie można mieć najmniejszych zastrzeżeń. Mocnym punktem tej płyty jest także uznawany za pastisz muzyki reggae D’yer Mak’er, nawiązujący swoim tytułem do nieprzetłumaczalnego na język polski dowcipu. Swoją drogą śpiew Planta z tego numeru powielała przeszło 30 lat później popowa wokalistka Nelly Furtado. Na uwagę zasługuje na tej płycie jeszcze Over the Hills and Far Away, utwór jakby żywcem wyjęty z zeppelinowskiej „trójki”, dobry, lecz nie wnoszący nic nowego do kolorystyki Led Zeppelin. Posłuchać można też lekkiego Dancing Days, który, owszem, jest „fajny”, ale nic z sobą nie niesie poza wpadającym w ucho rytmem. Ten kawałek to takie muzyczne pustosłowie. Niemalże nie do słuchania są natomiast na Houses of the Holy utwory nr 4 i 8. Pierwszy z nich to The Crunge, naprawdę słaby, jałowy i nieciekawy, można go uznać za bardzo wczesną zapowiedź nieudanego ostatniego albumu grupy, In Through the Out Door. Drugi zaś to rozpoczęty wyrazistym riffem The Ocean, kompozycyjny miszmasz, istny ocean pomysłów, z którego wykluć by się mogło parę innych kawałków. Do tego ten zamykający płytę numer brzmi fatalnie, garażowo, jakby ktoś w ogóle zapomniał go zmiksować.

Houses of the Holy to płyta tak nierówna, jak niesławne polskie drogi. Bardziej popowa aniżeli jej poprzedniczki, stylistycznie bardziej niejednorodna i niespójna, mniej zadziorna i po prostu słabsza. Po jej wysłuchaniu nie dziwią też słowa Jimmy’ego Page’a, który powiedział o zgromadzonym na niej materiale: Nagrywaliśmy to, co każdemu z nas przyszło do głowy. Niemniej pomimo swych mankamentów i ona miała wielki wpływ na rozwój muzyki i stała się inspiracją dla licznych wykonawców. Ot, chociażby dla AC/DC, które w tytułowej kompozycji z Back In Black zaczerpnęło motyw z rytmiki The Ocean.
