Debiutancki album klasycznej progresywnej formacji, grającej tutaj ciężkiego prog-rocka w stylu wczesnych lat 70-tych.
Pierwszą część wypełnia 20-minutowa suita. Moim zdaniem jest to najlepszy album tej grupy!
Włoska edycja z 2003 roku.



Been away for a bit, but have a backlog of Italian vinyl accumulated in lockdown to get through. First up is Nuova Idea, their debut lp from 1971, In the Beginning. I must admit--acquiring a very hard to find original Ariston 1971 copy unexpectedly was like a bolt of lightning. I'd always heard of the side long song, Come Come Come being something that resonated with the kids and pushed some change in the Italian live scene (most important being them introducing the phenomenon of the side long song), but many reviews pushed the whole lp into the 'post psych-proto prog' bin, and advised going for Clowns for the full effect. I sensed something different in this crackly album, an object that had spent the last 49 years of its life in Italy and suddenly found itself it North America and spun some magic from past eras into an American living room. What has it seen? What parties was it at? Decades of weird hippie vibes are in the well worn grooves here. I digress...
(It's odd that the band supposedly didn't even know it was released until they'd seen it in a store (!)

Ok, maybe I am turning in to an Italian proto prog guy. Because my thoughts published previously for example on Delirium posit the idea that the original band really got it right-and when drastic changes happened, the spirit of the band somehow dissipated-- however prog the band vectored. Jesahel? Part of Italian culture revolved around this tune for a while in '72 as the 1971 early prog wave (Le Orme-Collage and New Trolls-Concerto Grosso per i New Trolls being the best examples) plowed psych and beat bands into the furrows like last years harvest. The early stuff by these bands got it right, the mission that many of these early Italian bands had been on-to reinvent popular music in a sea change for the pop world was concentrated very intensely in many bands debut work. (for convenience sake, Concerto Grosso and Collage get lumped into 'debut album' group). Many groups grew more complex and intricate as they developed but somehow shed a layer of their specialness as a consequence. This album contains the essential essence of Nuova Idea, and in a way, is perhaps their definitive release.

Part of this is due to their guitarist, Marco Zoccheddu. I'd initially discovered this guy in his next project, Osage Tribe, and was seriously impressed with his wild abandon attack on his guitar. Kind of Hendrix (not as overt as the Garybaldi guy), kind of early Clapton, definitely original, Marco created a masterpiece in the Osage album. I suspected that he would be a bit more subdued in his original big label prog band, and it is true, less pure guitar meltdown is on display. But something more interesting is going on here, a full band approach.

(note I followed him further into his next band Duello Madre, a jazz rock affair, and they don't create, well...a masterpiece. Highly disappointing denouement for one of my favorite Italian guitarists.)

Come, Come, Come is an amazing song. Some friends said 'it has the spirit of Delirium's Jesahel, kind of spontaneous melodies and planned harmonics that create some magic' It is definitely catchy, memorable magic. Several sections cleave and heal rifts in reality/song arrangement to fuse wide ranging Deep Purple circa their best prog 1970-71 arrangements with some Uriah Heep's better moments with an Italian twist. (Some might notice that the drum and vocal improv near the end of the side long song are similar in arrangement to the epic drum solo on the 1976 Yes live album Yesshows during the song Ritual. Likely that Moraz in Switzerland had his finger on the pulse of some obscure Italian rock than his Brit bandmates glomming this, and 'put it in the library' til it was needed). In final retrospect, it is clear this is one of the more important early Italian prog songs-this is somewhat akin to their Space Truckin (even though it predates that opus), in a more commercial clothing.

ELP also dips into the mix near the end-remember, this is 1971: ELP had Tarkus out, Crimson had their first two statements, Yes had the Yes Album, Aqualung was just out....Nuova Idea were on top of their international game early. One reason might be their two side projects, Underground Set and Psycheground Group-three albums from 1970 and 1971 that were instrumental albums with no information on members that were released in the UK and most of Europe in the post psych wave. Both lps are extremely rare in original release, and many do not know that both of these bands are Nuova Idea acting under contractual obligation. (many Italian bands would dep into other fake 'created by the label' ghost group bands designed to generate album sales as a different band.) This is a phenomenon not unknown in the UK, but really was pushed to the hilt in Italia. This also probably explains why they were surprised when their album under their own name came out. (an Ariston promo lp with Nuova Idea, i Top Four and Stormy Six was the first release of Come Come Come, so they had some confusing irons in the fire)

Side two is a mix of their original singles with one new song, and although a bit poppier, they are infused with the spirit of early Italian prog: like a slug of aqua vitae, will bring you out of cerebral clouds that sometimes...do...not...rock... into a range of bands that can pull your skullcap off and rewire you. To be fair, this album will only rewire you lightly, but it will be important to the next steps.

This album is essential to any early RPI collection, especially if one seeks any 1970-1971 early Italian bands that ended up defining a genre.

Some Colosseum and Deep Purple pre 1971 are good reference points.

four stars for RPI fans, 2.75 for prog fans.

Skeletal Earth was one of those bands that stuck out. Being influenced by both death and thrash metal as well as the more crossover style where hardcore punk meets metal they came up with an original sound. Formed in 1987 and releases 3 demos in the late 80’s. In 1991 they recorded their debut album ‘Eulogy for a Dying Fetus’ at Morrisound Studios ( Death, Cynic, Napalm Death) and produced by Scott Burns (Cannibal Corpse, Atheist, Deicide). Backing vocals by Paul Pavlovich (Assuck). Bonus to the album the ‘Chemical Breakfast’ Unreleased Ep 1990, ‘It's Not Our Fault...’ demo 1989 and ‘Live 5/5/89’ demo III. 33 tracks in total, remastered by Achilleas Kalantzis (Possessed, Malevolent Creation), new booklet design with rare pictures, flyers, posters, and extensive liner notes by Pim Blankenstein (Possessed, Sinister, Varathron).

No i po trzech latach od ukazania się całkiem niezłego demosa, doczekaliśmy się pełnometrażowego debiutu od Plasmodulated za powstanie, którego „winą” można obarczyć niejakiego Myk’a Colby’ego. Wraz z trzema innymi muzykami stworzył on klasyczne, death metalowe dzieło, czego próbkę mogliśmy już doświadczyć na wyżej wspomnianym, szesnastominutowym wydawnictwie. Amerykanie w dalszym ciągu penetrują grząskie wręcz bagniste rejony, zaglądając w najbardziej cuchnące zgnilizną jamy w wyniku czego, powstają pomysły na śmierć metalowe kawałki, łączące w sobie diabelskość Florydy z duchotą znad fińskich jezior. To wolne i średnie tempa, które miejscowo przechodzą w stonowane blasty, ale głównym trzonem utworów są żylaste riffy, gruboziarniste tremolo oraz chorobliwie piskliwe zagrywki, w między które Plasmodulated wplata, płynące swobodnie w przestrzeń, sugestywne solówki. Całość zagęszczona sekcją rytmiczną i ponurymi growlami zdaje się ważyć tonę i gniecie wzorcowo, ale również zsyła sporo niepokojącego klimatu, który podkreślają posępne melodie i okresowo użyte klawisze. Materiał oddający hołd wcześnie wspomnianym ujęciom. Wypełniony gęstą od trujących miazmatów atmosferą i budzący grozę. Nieskazitelnie wyprodukowany krążek, lecz nie pozbawiony podziemnego brudu w czym pomaga odpowiednio „posypane żwirem” strojenie gitar, które wraz z resztą instrumentów generują zwarte konstrukcje. Nic nowego, ale niosącego sporą dawkę dobrego death metalu o niesamowitej aurze. Warto posłuchać, a wielbiciele „wilgoci” z domieszką „smoły” na pewno będą zadowoleni.

However, An Ocean ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell contains a recklessly pinched Demilichian riffage, classic piercing whammy bombs, and spook-minded synth ambience that places Plasmodulated with an odor more pungent than its peers. With an infected ear that festers equally with doom-loaded, Incantation-indebted drags (“Gelatinous Mutation ov Brewed Origin,” “Trapped in the Plasmovoid”) and Voivod-on-jenkem cutaways to foul-throated extravagence (“The Final Fuckening”). An air of intelligent tempo design keeps An Ocean from never feeling trapped in a maze of its own fumes, with Colby’s lush and bubbling synth design seguing tumbles into hammering deathly tremolo runs (“Such Rapid Sphacelation”) and Celtic Frosted riff tumbles (“Drowning in Sputum”) alike, all before swirling about his own tattered, trailing vocal sputters. Pochodzą z Lublina pod Świdnikiem i dopiero się rozkręcają. To dwie najważniejsze wiadomości, jakie wyłapałem z bookletu grindcore’owego Enterchrist.

Jaki z tego morał? Booklety są fajne i potrzebne. Oczywiście akurat ten zespół nie jest mi nieznany, ale recenzuję ich chyba po raz pierwszy. Szczególnie, że i „We Are Just Getting Started” to debiut kapeli. Wiele Wam o nich nie powiem, bo ileż można pisać o typowym grindcorze? No można wiele, ale po co. Dwadzieścia trzy minuty wypełnione są skocznym i dość prostym grindem. Może i nawet kliszowym, rzekłbym – bo całość skoczna, świniak dość często przejmuje mikrofon, ażeby wychrumkiwać nie do końca chyba poważne teksty. No taka konwencja, nie mam z tym problemu. Muzyczka zapierdala sobie jak ta lala, a że czasem mam ochotę na takie brutalne granie, Enterchrist wyciąga pomocną dłoń, do tego ułożoną w startrekowe pozdrowienie (noo… prawie). Tylko tyle i aż tyle. Z drugiej strony – „We Are Just Getting Started” nie złapało mnie jeszcze na tyle za serce, jaja czy wątrobę, żebym miał ochotę wracać do niej bardzo często, jak do kilku innych grindowych pozycji. Ale że dopiero zaczynają, dam im czas.

Niemniej jednak – do odmóżdżenia taki wpierdol jest całkiem spoko. Rzućcie uchem.

Absolutny klasyk ciężkiego grania! Trzeci album klasyków amerykańskiego, epickiego metalu - przez wiekszość fanów uważany za najlepsze dokonanie zespołu Marka Sheltona. Dwupłytowa, zremasterowana niemiecka edycja z 2013 roku. Dodatkowo osiemnaście utworów, w tym alternatywne miksy i nagrania demo.



"Crystal Logic" to trzecia płyta amerykańskiego zespołu, który nie cieszył się zbyt dużą popularnością w Europie z powodu bardzo małego nakładu środków na reklamę. Wielu sądzi, że to ich pierwszy krążek, ale to nie prawda. Prawdą jest jednak, że na tej płycie zaczęli wypracowywać już swój własny wyjątkowy styl. To arcydzieło epickiego metalu. Płyta utrzymana jest jak na Manilla Road przystało w baśniowych klimatach, opowiada o mistycznej walce dobra ze złem, o wikingach, którzy zawsze bronić będę swojego świętego miasta.

Płyta rozpoczyna się świetnym intrem, które przenosi nas w świat baśni i magii. "Necropolis" to krótki, ale bardzo żywy utwór, który jeszcze przez długi czas pozostaje w głowie. Tak samo tytułowy "Crystal Logic", w którym zespół doskonale radzi sobie ze zmianami tempa. "Flaming Metal System" został dodany jako bonus na nowej zremasterowanej wersji płyty i po dzień dzisiejszy uznawany jest za jeden z najlepszych utworów w historii heavy metalu. Najbardziej rozbudowany ze wszystkich jest ostania kompozycja połączona z "Epilogiem". Sam "Dreams Of Eschaton" trwa prawie 10 minut! Zaczyna się świetnym akustycznym wejściem, a później przeradza się w silne metalowe uderzenie.

Według mnie najlepszym ze wszystkich utworów na "Crystal Logic" jest "The Veils Of Negative Existance", który zaczyna się niesamowitym krzykiem Marka Sheltona i wręcz perfekcyjnie dopracowanym tekstem, mówiącym o strażniku mistycznego świata, walczącego ze złem.

Jeśli jesteś fanem epickiego metalu, lubisz doskonałą muzykę i chcesz odkryć w muzyce coś niesamowitego, to polecam Ci album "Crystal Logic" Manilla Road.

Even though Manilla Road is considered a cult band by those who know them, they haven't gained nearly as much fame as other hard rock and heavy metal bands from the 70s/80s.They started off in the space rock territory, typical of the time, but quickly found their own style and created some of the most engaging and fascinating USPM ever. The release that showcases that best is, in my opinion, Crystal Logic. All the songs on this album are memorable, and there is a surprising amount of variety, from the 3-minute rager of Necropolis to a 12-minute finale. There are faster and slower moments scattered throughout the record with great balance. Every element of this album, from front to back, feels deliberate and thought of, which is something most albums, particularly today, lack. There is a strong artistic vision, mainly thanks to the sole composer and lyricist, Mark Shelton, aka The Shark (R.I.P.). He was a true metal mastermind, and his songwriting style stands out in the sea of other heavy metal.

The Shark did lead vocals here, which are mostly mid-high range with some lower tone moments in more dramatic fragments, but his vocal style is VERY characteristic, and he can't be mistaken for any other singer, especially at the time of making Crystal Logic. His accent, intonations, overall delivery, and occasional shouts make his performance wild and captivating. He also wrote and performed all the guitars, a 6- and, interestingly, a 12-string. The guitar parts are extremely well written and performed, although (I'm not 100% sure, as I'm not a guitarist) they don't seem technical; it's mainly about the creativity and the feel. There are many solos in the album, all of which are amazingly done, my favorite ones being those in the title track, Necropolis, and Dreams of Eschaton. Speaking of Dreams Of Eschaton, this epic finale consists of an acoustic slower part, a heavy metal middle, and from the halfway point onwards, it becomes instrumental, with a 3.5-minute guitar solo, then a creepy interlude. The track's full name is "Dream Of Eschaton/Epilogue," so we can assume the epilogue, which closes out this record, is the ending sequence of Shelton manically screaming, followed by ambience of what sounds like crystals. It is also important to talk about the drumming, which is performed in a way that perfectly fits all the songs. Its standout feature would be the fills, which give Rick Fisher, the drummer, an opportunity to show off, and he definitely uses these moments well. Fisher was also responsible for backing vocals here, which definitely enhance the listening experience, even if they're not always that noticeable. Now onto the bass, which is simple but serves the songs well and is not buried under the mix. Performed by Scott Park. The overall mixing on the album is great, with all instruments on display and a classic old-school feel (it was released in 1983, after all).

Lyrically, some songs tell stories while others are a bit too cryptic, to the point that I'm not sure what the author's intention was, especially on tracks like Crystal Logic or Veils Of Negative Existence. I may also be overanalyzing, so go read the lyrics yourself, as I believe there is value in them. All things considered, this album is perfect in my belief. No classic heavy metal or USPM album compares to this. While a bit strange in the delivery, it is perfect. The highlight of this record for me is Mark Shelton's vocal and guitar performance, as well as his songwriting. He really was the soul of Manilla Road, and he will forever be missed by fans of the band.
