Legion of the Damned is a Death/Thrash Metal band originally from Geldrop, Netherlands. They were formerly known as Occult, but decided to change their name to Legion of the Damned in 2004.

They unleashed their first thrashing metal storm on the 6th of January 2006. "Malevolent Rapture" was an uncompromising slab of killer death/thrash reminiscent of the masters of the eighties packed in a modern killer sound by Andy Classen and received many killer reviews in the press. The band showed to be able to combine furious thrash mayhem with midpaced neckbreaking rhythms, translocating the realm of the eighties into the new millenium.

Since "Malevolent Rapture" the band has been destroying the stage on the No Mercy Festivals together with Cannibal Corpse and Kataklysm, playing festivals such as Rockhard Festival, Summerbreeze and Wacken Open Air, as well as a minitour in September 2006 with veterans Destruction in the Netherlands. During the No Mercy Festivals, Harold Gielen joined the band on bass, increasing the ferocious power of this well-oiled warmachine on stage. Between the gigs the band was busy writing new songs for the next album.

In December/January of 2006/2007 They joined forces with Sodom and Finntroll playing shows in Holland, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland showing the audience what they can expect in the future.

The band has returned with "Sons of the Jackal" in January 2007, featuring 10 songs that surpass the previous material. More dark, more violent and more diverse but still delivering the razorsharp riffing with utmost precisions, tight as hell drumming by Erik Fleuren and hateful vocals by Maurice Swinkels which sound even more menacing and vicious than before. The production by Andy Classen at Stage One Studio outdoes the job on the previous album. That Legion of the Damned know the tools of the trade is displayed in the violent hammering of "Son of the Jackal", the devilish anthem "Diabolist", the primitive stomping of "Death Is My Master (Slay For Kali)", the sinister midpaced power of "Infernal Wrath" or the fast Kreator style butchery in "Avenging Archangel". The album "Sons of the Jackal" even made it to the official german album charts on place number 54.

After a succesful tour with Kreator and Celtic Frost, and so, intentensivly playing shows all across europe in 2007, in January 2008 Legion of the Damned released "Feel the blade", a re-release album from their previous band Occult's "Elegy for the Weak", the album got superb reviews in all major magazines across Europe and not even entered the official album charts again in Germany, but also in Finland, Norway and Austria. "Feel the Blade" got officially released in South America by Nuclear Blast, Finland by Stay Heavy Records, North America by Season of Mist , Norway by Indie and in Japan by Spiritual Beast Records.

In December 2008 they released their fourth full-length, entitled "Cult of the Dead".

Bez wątpienia jest to najlepszy album niemieckich prekursorów tzw. Pirate Metalu, spierać się nie ma sensu bo to arcydzieło nie tylko, nowo powstałego wtedy „gatunku”, ale po prostu ogólnie pojętego heavy metalu. Album wypełniony jest po brzegi niesamowitymi riffami, masą wspaniałych, zapadających w pamięć melodii i świetnych tekstów.

W swoim czasie było to niewątpliwie oryginalne i wyróżniające się granie. Klimat jaki tworzą „Evilution”, „Running Blood” i „Battle of Waterloo” (konkurować z nim może tylko „Treasure Island” z płyty „Pile of Skulls”) to kolejna cecha na plus. Jest podniosły, majestatyczny, a jednocześnie pełen mocy. Pamiętam jak kiedyś wracając skądś pks-em słuchałem tej płyty, a za oknem zachodziło słońce, niebo skąpane było w czerwonej poświacie, powoli nastawał mrok. Soundtrackiem do tego zjawiska było intro do „Evilution”. Wciąż gdy słyszę ten utwór mam przed oczami ten obraz, coś niesamowitego. Kompozycje takie jak nieśmiertelny, koncertowy hymn „Riding the Storm”, „Marooned”, „Tortuga Bay” czy „Bad to the Bone” to już konkretne, szybkie i melodyjne galopady w których nie sposób nie śpiewać razem z zespołem, klasyka w ich dorobku. Album pomimo tylu już lat od nagrania nie starzeje się ani trochę.

Rok w którym ukazał się „Death or Glory” to szczyt popularności Running Wild i najlepszy skład, którym dysponował Rolf, na basie był wciąż Jens Becker (obecnie od dawna w Grave Digger), na drugiej gitarze Majk Moti, a za garami Iain Finlay. Wtedy też dawali najlepsze koncerty. Drobną tego namiastką jest nagranie jednego z występów w niemieckim klubie, które był niejako rozgrzewką przed pełną trasą. Materiał ten ukazał się na kasecie VHS („Death or Glory Tour”), a w chwili obecnej krąży też na dvd jako bootleg. Dziwi mnie bardzo, że pomimo swojej popularności na przełomie lat 80-tych i 90-tych nigdy nie koncertowali poza Europą. Płyta „Death or Glory” nie tylko ponowiła sukces „Port Royal”, ale przerosła go dwukrotnie osiągając 100 tys. sprzedanych egzemplarzy albumu w samych Niemczech stając się running-wildowym bestsellerem. Szkoda tylko, że niedługo po wydaniu płyty szeregi zespołu opuścili kolejno Ian Finlay oraz Majk Moti. Niestety mimo sukcesu, było to czas w którym grupa przechodziła szereg problemów personalnych i nie dało się obyć bez strat.

Jak sami widzicie, wyrażam się o tej płycie w samych superlatywach. Inaczej być nie może, bo po prostu uwielbiam ten album, nie powiem i nie dam powiedzieć o nim złego słowa. Młodym słuchaczom, którzy dopiero przymierzają się do Running Wild polecam zacząć właśnie tutaj, „Under Jolly Roger”, chociaż przełomowy i udany, zostawcie sobie na potem.

Płyty "Under Jolly Roger", a zwłaszcza "Port Royal" wywindowały Running Wild na szczyty popularności heavy metalu. Zaledwie rok trzeba było czekać na następcę wspomnianego "Port Royal". Wielkiej rewolucji nie było, a Rolf Kasparek poszedł po prostu za ciosem.
Koniec końców okazało się, że "Death Or Glory" jest jednak płytą nieco odmienną od poprzedniczek. Z jednej strony mamy wciąż do czynienia z żywiołowym, świetnym technicznie heavy metalem - riffy są bardziej skomplikowane, praca sekcji trochę bardziej urozmaicona (czego dowodem niech będzie rewelacyjny "Highland Glory" z kapitalną partią basu). Z drugiej strony można odnieść wrażenie, że muzyka zespołu jakby okrzepła. Zabrakło tutaj tego dynamity znanego z "Port Royal" - utwory są dynamiczne, ale nie porywające swoją rytmiką i melodiami w taki stopniu jak niektórzy mogliby oczekiwać.

Running Wild stworzyło bardzo przemyślany i dopracowany zestaw utworów. W tym przypadku naturalnym wydaje się wiec fakt, że "Death Or Glory" stracił trochę na muzycznym animuszu. W zamian dostaliśmy ciekawsze partie instrumentalne oraz muzykę, która daleka jest od banału.

Wiele już było prób określenia przynależności gatunkowej dla niemieckiego zespołu Running Wild. Z racji muzyki, jaką grali na swej pierwszej płycie Gates To Purgatory, określono ich jako black metal. Ale nie był to taki black metal, jakim to mianem określa się dziś kapele z wymalowanymi twarzami i z maczugami w rękach. W owych czasach mianem tym określano zespoły heavy metalowe, które w tekstach swoich kompozycji poruszały tematy "diabelskie". Grupę próbowano też określać właśnie jako heavy metalową, power metalową, czy nawet thrash metalową. Tak czy inaczej, muzyka ta powinna spodobać się fanom wszystkich tych gatunków, bo jest wypadkową pomiędzy formacjami takimi jak Sword czy Grave Digger. Przede wszystkim brygada Rolfa Kasparka posiada własny rozpoznawalny styl i równie oryginalny image. W warstwie tekstowej i wizualnej pełno jest nawiązań do dawnych morskich piratów...

Death Or Glory to szósta płyta w dorobku Running Wild i moim zdaniem płyta najlepsza. Słychać, że muzycy podnieśli swoje muzyczne kwalifikacje, a kompozycje stał się bardziej wyszukane. Gitary grają tu ostrzej niż na poprzednich wydawnictwach, ale osobiście uważam to za plus. Nadal teksty dotyczą piratów, korsarzy, flibustierów i innych rozbójników morskich. Większość utworów utrzymana jest w tempach szybkich, co widać już w otwierającym krążek Riding The Storm. Ten kawałek ma zresztą szczególne znaczenie, bo choć formalnie mówi o piratach. Można doszukać się tu głębszego życiowego przesłania. "Z twarzą na wiatr przemierzymy sztorm i zachowamy nasz kurs, cokolwiek się nie stanie..." - dobra piosenka na leczenie skłonności depresyjnych, dodaje nadziei i energii. Innymi szybkimi numerami godnymi odnotowania są Tortuga Bay, Bad To The Bone (całkiem fajny teledysk - wizja z koncertu, fonia studyjna) i tytułowe Death Or Glory. Zasadniczo nie ma na wydawnictwie kompozycji słabych, każda z nich to potencjalny przebój. Na krążku zamieszczono jeden utwór instrumentalny, Highland Glory (The Eternal Fight). Zastosowano w nim kilka ciekawych rozwiązań melodycznych, a na uwagę zasługuje w pierwszej kolejności partia gitary basowej. W owych czasach basiści nie mieli zbyt wiele do powiedzenia w zespole i na tym tle gra Jensa Beckera staje się więc czymś bardzo charakterystycznym. Płyta nie jest monotonna, wbrew pozorom nie zawiera podobnych do siebie kawałków. Dla przykładu taki Renegade więcej ma wspólnego z hard rockiem niż metalem. Bazuje na rasowym hard rockowym riffie, bardzo rytmicznym, a i wokalista spisuje się tu znakomicie. Wolniejszą kompozycją jest Evilution, co nie znaczy, że gorszą. Wręcz przeciwnie, to jeden z najlepszych numerów na płycie, podobnie jak March On, bonus track w wersji kompaktowej. Bardzo lubię ten utwór i nie wyobrażam sobie, jak w ogóle mogłoby go nie być w zestawie. Skoro już o dodatkowych kawałkach mowa, to japońska publiczność została jeszcze uraczona trzema innymi numerami, które w 1999 roku wytwórnia Noise Records wydała jeszcze na reedycji płyty i dorzuciła utwór Chains & Leather. Na polskim rynku spotkać jeszcze można inne wydanie krążka, wydane przez firmę Koch. Tej edycji zdecydowanie nie polecam, gdyż zbyt wiele egzemplarzy zawiera wady w postaci trzasków i przeskoków na ścieżkach, a w dodatku utwory Death Or Glory i The Battle Of Waterloo, które w oryginalnym wydaniu są ze sobą złączone, tutaj w paskudny sposób zostały rozdzielone.

Materiał muzyczny zaprezentowany przez Running Wild jest jak zwykle miły dla ucha. Zarazem jest to płyta bardzo dopracowana pod każdym względem, zagrana z dużą dozą energii i zacięcia. Zdecydowanie jeden z najlepszych albumów metalowych, jakie dane mi było słyszeć.

RUNNING WILD po wydaniu „Gates of Purgatory” może nie zdobył jeszcze tak szerokiej rzeszy fanów co w okresie piractwa, ale jakoś to Rolfa Kasperka nie przygnębiło i na nagrał właściwie niemal identyczny album zatytułowany „Branded and Exiled”. Dokonano drobnej zmiany na stanowisku gitarzysty gdzie Geralda Wernceke który skupił się na działalności pozamuzycznej, obecnie podbija serca starych fanów za sprawą zespołu THE GATE , a w jego miejsce pojawił się jeden z najbardziej utalentowanych gitarzystów RUNNING WILD, a mianowicie Majk Moti. Choć trzeba przyznać, że trzeba było jeszcze trochę poczekać na jego pOPIS umiejętności. Co ciekawe mamy zmianą personalną, a muzycznie nie ma większych różnic. Klimat podobnie mroczny, zresztą jak teksty, nawet brzmienie jest identyczne. Różnica polega na tym, że jest tutaj jakby oddalenie nieco się od mrocznych, wręcz szatańskich klimatów na rzecz bardziej rycerskich, a najlepiej to słychać w takim metalowym hymnie jak „Chains And Leather”, który jest równie atrakcyjny co słynny „Prisoners Of Our Time”. Oczywiście styl, sposób grania i forma jest bez zmian, to dalej ten sam RUNNING WILD co na debiucie, choć mniej surowy to w dalszym ciągu utrzymany w średnio szybkim tempie, z dużą dawką energii, chwytliwych refrenów czy prostych łatwo w padających w ucho melodii. To że album zbytnio nie odbiega od debiutu zawdzięczamy poniekąd Kasperkowi, który jest odpowiedzialny niemal za cały materiał. Satysfakcja podczas słuchania tego albumu właściwie gwarantowana. Już od pierwszych sekund uderza w słuchacza fala uderzeniowa przesiąknięta niemiecką tradycję w postaci „Branded And Exiled”, który idealnie się sprawdza w postaci koncertowego pobudzenia ludzi. Skoro na debiucie wszystko było ok, to po co kombinować, skoro można podać to jeszcze raz ograniczając się do drobnych zmian, czyli innej melodii i refrenu. Rozpędzony „Gods of Iron” czy porywisty „Realm Of Shades” to przykłady utworów, które spokojnie mogłyby się znaleźć na poprzednim albumie. Podobna konstrukcja, podobna melodyjność, wydźwięk, nawet tak samo rozplanowane solówki. Otóż solówki to coś co pozwoliło przetrwać RUNNING WILD w tej mało oryginalnej formie. To właśnie umiejętność wygrywania atrakcyjnych partii gitarowych, to umiejętność komponowania killerów pozwoliła przetrwać zespołowi ten początkujący okres. Jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych kawałków z tego krążka jest tolkienowski „Mordor” które w przeciwieństwie do reszty jest utrzymany w jednostajnym średnim tempie. Jest mrok, jest zimny klimat, a wszystko jednak nie sprawia wrażenia toporności. Kultowa dla mnie jest solówka w tym utworze i rozwiązanie podobne do „Diabolic Force” gdzie bardzo melodyjna solówka kończy kompozycje. A skoro mowa o „Diabolic Force” to podobnej konstrukcji jest bojowy „Fight The Opression” . Natomiast najsłabiej wypada mroczny „Evil Spirit” napisany przez basistę Borrisa. Pomysł na bardziej ponury, bardziej stonowany utwór udany, ale wykonanie nieco gorsze. I tak jak „Gengis Ghan” tak i „Marching To Die” zwiastuje styl jaki zespół zacznie prezentować na kolejnych albumach. Sposób w jaki został zaaranżowany przypomina to co można usłyszeć na „Under Jolly Roger”. Oprócz jasno sprecyzowanego stylu, oprócz wyrównanego i pełnego przebojów materiału, mamy też zwyżkową formę Kasperka jako wokalisty, a to dopiero początek jego szkolenia w tej dziedzinie. Drobne zmiany kosmetyczne, nieco odświeżyły formułę, nie tracąc swojego naturalnego charakteru. Jednak czy zespół byłby tak znany i popularny, gdyby tak grał cały czas? Raczej nie. Ewolucja w kierunku pirackiego stylu przysporzyła zespołowi więcej sławy i dzięki temu są dziś tak wielkim zespołem. O „Branded and Exiled” złego słowa nie mogę napisać. Ocena : 9/10 (PMW)

Jeden z najwspanialszych debiutów w historii heavy metalu teraz ukazuje się ponownie w wersji zremasterowanej i z bonusowymi piosenkami.

Hamburska formacja Running Wild zadebiutowała albumem "Gates To Purgatory" w 1984 roku. Inspirowani przez Judas Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden i Kiss, Niemcy zaserwowali osiem porywających kompozycji "Diabolic Force", "Genghis Khan" i "Soldiers Of Hell" na czele.

Oryginalną listę utworów wzbogacono aż o osiem kompozycji, w tym pochodzące z kompilacji "Rock from Hell - German Metal Attack", strony B EP-ki "Victim Of States Power" oraz kompilacji "Death Metal". Niekwestionowany klasyk heavy metalu!!!




Black metal. Trudno pisać recenzję tak dobrej i do tego debiutanckiej płyty niemieckiej grupy z Hamburga. Jeśli ktoś mi mówi, że to najlepsza płyta Running Wild - a jest ich kilkanaście - nie dyskutuję z nim: to już wyłącznie kwestia gustu. Pierwszy raz usłyszałem ją (o ile dobrze pamiętam) w 1988 roku, była to po "South of Heaven" Slayera druga metalowa płyta jaką poznałem w całości, a obie wywarły na mnie taki wpływ, że pozostałem fanem heavy metalu do dzisiaj. Płyta jest bardzo szybka i daleko odbiega od stylu "South of Heaven". Nie ma na niej kawałków o mrocznym, posępnym klimacie. Nie jest również tak żywiołowa i agresywna jak "Kill'em All" Metalliki, ale ma zdecydowanie lepszy wokal i kompozycje. Zaryzykuję stwierdzenie, że kompilując ze sobą style gry z dwóch płyt Metalliki: "Kill'em All" i "Master of Puppets" otrzymamy coś w stylu "Gates To Purgatory". Nie jest porównywalna z "Ride The Ligthning" Metalliki, płytą prezentującą bardziej dojrzały heavy metal i zdaję sobie z tego sprawę. Za to niewątpliwie lepsza od "Melissy" Mercyful Fate z 1983 roku. Dodam tylko, że "Melissę" również uwielbiam, co mam nadzieję zadowoli fanów Kinga Diamonda.

Cechą "Gates To Purgatory" - i w ogóle Running Wild - są rytmiczne, spójne i szybkie kompozycje połączone z chórkami w często bardzo krótkich refrenach. Perkusja na "GTP" jest o wiele łagodniejsza niż u Slayera, gra rolę pasywną, podporządkowaną gitarom i wokalowi, ale też w kompozycjach Running Wild nie ma miejsca dla swobodnej gry na perkusji. Jest uwiązana rytmem. Siła tej płyty to spójność i jednolity klimat - to czego brak na przykład na "Ride The Lightning".

Pierwszy utwór - "Victim of States Power" (wydany również na singlu) - to najszybszy kawałek na płycie i w ogóle jeden z najlepszych utworów Running Wild. Świetna kompozycja, można tego słuchać w nieskończoność. Bez zbędnych dodatków i powikłań gitarowych. Proste i genialne.

"Black Demon" jest dużo wolniejszy i cięższy, ale daleki od balladki. Przypomina "The Thing That Shoud Not Be" Metalliki, ale to skojarzenie ma na celu tylko przybliżyć Ci klimat utworu.

"Preacher" - najcięższy utwór na płycie. Mam wrażenie, że dobrze wyglądałby jego cover zagrany przez Metallikę i umieszczony obok "Sad But True" na czarnym albumie.

Cztery to "Soldiers of Hell". Ten utwór obrazuje duszę Running Wild - kto go nie lubi, nie ma czego u Running Wild szukać. Krótki refren: "Soldiers of Hell". Kapitalna solówka w środku utworu. Po prostu świetne.

"Diabolic Force" - brak słów. O ile pamiętam początkowe kilka taktów "Diabolic Force" było w latach 1988/89 początkiem metalowej audycji w radiu. Kapitalna, bardzo dynamiczna kompozycja z jednosłowowym refrenem "Tonight" wykrzyczanym bardzo wysoko, coś w stylu Kinga Diamonda. No i ta solówka. Znów jeden z najlepszych utworów Running Wild.

Szóstka to "Adrian SOS" dający chwilę przerwy przed kolejnym utworem. Szybki kawałek (SOS oznacza w nim skrót: Son Of Satan!) i dosyć krótki, najsłabszy na płycie. Znajduje się w fatalnym miejscu, po zakończeniu 5 przerzucam od razu na 7, nie mogąc doczekać się tych gitar...

"Genghis Khan" to coś w stylu "Whiplash" z "Kill'em All", ale wolniejsze, łagodniejsze i o klasę lepiej skomponowane. Rzuca na kolana. Podobnie jak w "Diabolic Force" krótki refren, tym razem liczący dwa słowa: "Genghis Khan", po których od razu zaczyna się gitarowa jazda bez trzymanki. Po dwóch dosyć krótkich zwrotkach, druga część utworu z kapitalną, solową grą gitarową. Utwór idealnie przygotuje Cię na finałowy numer.

"Prisoner Of Our Time" to sztandarowa produkcja Running Wild, oddająca siłę ich kompozycji. Lekka i ciężka jednocześnie - genialna. Chórek "...we are Running Wild" w refrenie na zakończenie.

Jedyny zgrzyt na tej płycie to dwa bonusy: "Walpurgis Night" i "Satan". Są na tu zbędne i nie wiem czemu ktoś je dodał. Są bardzo dobre, tego nie kwestionuję, ale płyta kończy się na "Prisoner Of Our Time". Po numerze 8 powinna być cisza, by dać Ci znak, że czas na zapuszczenie płyty od nowa.

Jeszcze kilka zdań komentarza. Gdyby kompozytor i wokalista Running Wild - Rolf Kasparek - współpracował z Metalliką, zapewne pozostałaby ona w kręgu heavy metalu i nie skręciła w hard rock w 1991 roku, po ewidentnych kłopotach z tworzeniem nowego thrash metalowego materiału, widocznych na "...And Justice For All". W ciągu ostatnich pięciu lat nie zdarzyło mi się dosłuchać "One" do końca - utwór genialny, ale... o minutę za długi. Running Wild nie robi takich błędów. Ostatnio w jednym z wywiadów, Lars Ulrich, wyrażając po raz kolejny niezadowolenie z płyty "...And Justice For All", powiedział, że genialne kawałki zawsze są proste, a nic na "...And Justice For All" proste nie jest. "Gates To Purgatory" jest jak najbardziej prosta, jest genialna i doskonale rozumiem motywy fanów twierdzących, że Running Wild to najlepsza heavy metalowa kapela na świecie. Nie dyskutuję z takimi poglądami, sam przez pewien czas tak uważałem, między innymi dzięki "Gates To Purgatory". Gdyby nie trzy ostatnie płyty Iron Maiden ("The X Factor" 1995, "Virtual XI" 1998 i "Brave New World" 2000), napisałbym już na początku tej recenzji bez cienia wątpliwości, że Running Wild przewyższa Iron Maiden o klasę. Steve Harris na szczęście wziął się ostatnio do roboty i tak łatwo zdyskredytować się nie da.

Ocena 10/10 za kapitalny debiut i kawał świetnej muzyki, której ząb czasu jeszcze nie naruszył i do której często wracam nawet po kilkunastu latach. Dodam tylko, że ich kolejny album "Branded And Exiled" z 1985 roku był równie udany.
