Jedna z najciekawszych grindcore'owych grup ostatnich lat. Zabójczy nieustający grind w stylu TERRORIZER, NASUM, starego CARCASS, LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER, MACHETAZO!



I’ve heard some Nashgul material before, I even own a couple of their split 7”s. But I’ve never paid them too much attention for some reason, and only bought their releases for their split partners. It’s not that I’ve ever thought they were bad, but they’ve never managed to blow me away and hence I haven’t tracked down all of their stuff. But this is their first fullength and it’s just over 26 minutes long, so it’s a rather short fullength. That doesn’t bother me as grindcore is a genre that certainly can get away with shorter releases since it’s usually jam-packed with songs anyway.

But one of the first things that strikes me with "El dia después al fin de la humanidad" is the absolutely killer-looking booklet; I’m just a sucker for zombie artwork. And looking through the booklet I also realized that not all of their lyrics were in their native tongue (I was under the impression it was), here it’s about 50/50 between Spanish and English, and both languages have translations vice versa. I’ve never before realized just how obsessed the lads are with movies, and some lyrics are just pure homage’s to specific flicks. However none of that is really what’s important.

The old school grindcore presented here should speak to fans of Repulsion, Terrorizer, Warsore, Sewn Shut and tons of other bands, but they also incorporate some death metal all while retaining a somewhat crusty touch at times. They even go back to the days of yore which flavoured death metal with some thrash, so there’s tons of diversity presented. The riffing is carefully laced with melody instead of a pure churning whirlwind of indiscernible riffs, which is accustom for many grind acts. The drumming also feels very true, just pure human blasting ability; and it sounds real and vivid. A certain amount of variation throughout their tracks is to be heard, and it definitely doesn’t sound like just an endless stream of similar songs (which unfortunately also seems accustom).

The adrenaline level is high, the aggression is in your face and everything just reeks of old school munching grindcore. The dual vocals add tons of aggression with its high-pitch screams and low-key growls, and whether it’s one of their slower bits with groovy riffing or just pure onslaught of blasting it’s bliss. I don’t know really why I haven’t paid them more attention in the past, but I’ll definitely keep track of them in the future.

Na początku ustalmy sobie jedną rzecz – „Chaos pełen idei” nie jest płytą jazzową. Owszem, momentami flirtuje z muzyką improwizowaną, ale bardziej w formach czysto instrumentalnych, niż wokalnych. To pełna różnorodności i tytułowego stylistycznego chaosu podróż, którą serwuje nam Wojtek Mazolewski – basista zespołu Pink Freud, autorskiej formacji Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet, czy Tymański Yass Ensemble.

Trudno jednoznacznie określić nową płytę artysty, głównie przez wspomniane już zróżnicowanie. Całość otwierają Organizmy piękne z hipnotyzującym głosem Justyny Święs, która oprócz głównego tematu serwuje nam piękne wokalizy. Tuż po tym słyszymy młody, rockowy głos Piotra Zioły w Kolorze czerwieni. Oprócz rock’n’rollowego sznytu pojawiają się tu instrumenty dęte. Angel of the Morning z Natalią Przybysz wprowadza odrobinę spokoju i przestrzeni w tym muzycznym rozgardiaszu. Z każdym kolejnym utworem Mazolewski łączy nie tylko różne gatunki (pop, rock, reagge, muzykę improwizowaną, szeroko pojętą muzykę alternatywną), pokolenia (bardzo ciekawy przekrój artystów występujących na krążku), ale i spuściznę legend muzyki rozrywkowej – Nirvany (Heart Shaped Box), Rage Against The Machine w Twoi idole (Bombtrack),
Major Lazer w Gdybym (Get Free). Chaos prowadzony charyzmą frontmana, jego pomysłem na sklejanie ze sobą pozornie odległych światów – idei. Okazuje się, że Mazolewski ma doskonały zmysł łączenia poszczególnych kompozycji – stylów z konkretnymi głosami i osobowościami. Mamy tu wiele zaskakujących zwrotów. Po przesłuchaniu jednym ciągiem całej płyty nie od razu człowiek potrafi sobie wytłumaczyć, co właśnie się tu wydarzyło.

Nazwa projektu Mazolewski/Porter brzmi jakby była kilkunastoprocentowym dziełem jakiegoś browaru rzemieślniczego. Miłośników piwa muszę jednak rozczarować: to tylko wspólny twór dwóch legend rodzimej sceny muzycznej, którzy noszą takie nazwiska. Na szczęście - tak jak w przypadku dobrze uwarzonego portera bałtyckiego - płyta ta uderza do głowy bardzo mocno.

Jeżeli współpraca bluesmana i rockmana Johna Portera z jednym z najbardziej przewrotowych jazzmanów polskiej sceny, Wojtkiem Mazolewskim, wydaje wam się zaskoczeniem, to pewnie nie zdajecie sobie sprawy, że "Philosophia" to nie pierwsze ich wspólne dzieło. W 2016 roku Porter połączył siły z Nergalem, czego wynikiem był projekt Me and That Man. Tak się jakoś zdarzyło, że na jedynym do tej pory albumie tego projektu to właśnie lider Pink Freud odpowiedzialny był za partie basu.

Porter gościnnie pojawił się też w utworze "Polish Girl" na solowej płycie Mazolewskiego - "Chaos pełen idei" z listopada 2016 r. To wówczas zawiązała się idea wspólnego projektu - "Philosophia" to kawał znakomitego, eklektycznego grania.
O ile Me and That Man rzucało dość oczywiste tropy, głównie w postaci Nicka Cave'a czy Johnny'ego Casha, o tyle na "Philosophii" muzykom, pomimo mocnego osadzenia w tradycji bluesowej, zdarza się odlatywać w bardziej zaskakujące regiony. Singlowe, doskonale znane już ze stacji radiowych "Don't Ask Me Questions" oparte na powtarzalnej partii basu to wczesny post-punk pełną gębą: mocny, energiczny refren kontrastowany jest z minimalistycznym podejściem do aranżacji zwrotek.

Niesamowicie zaskakujący jest "Driver", który im bardziej chyli się ku końcowi, tym wyraźniej skręca w noise rockowe klimaty charakterystyczne dla takich zespołów jak Dinosaur Jr. czy Sonic Youth. Słychać zresztą, że awangarda gitarowa jest muzykom bliska także po emocjonalnym, przyjemnie hałasującym "Place of No Return", którym to muzycy zamykają płytę, albo po tym, co się dzieje w solówce "Orange Sunshine".

Oczywiście nie brakuje stricte bluesowych utworów charakterystycznych dla twórczości Portera. Wielbiciele bardziej chrypliwego oblicza muzyka dostaną chociażby "Soul Mountain", a miłośnicy odniesień do Casha czy Dylana zadowolą się uchowanym w atmosferze alt-country "Strangers". Fajnie usłyszeć też, gdy artyści postanawiają dać sobie na luz w jungle'owo-funkującym "All About You".

Jeżeli miałbym jednak wskazać najjaśniejszy punkt albumu, byłoby to jednak rozpoczynająca płytę "Broken Heart Sutra". Owszem, początek opiera się na bluesowym minimalizmie, dość jasno stanowiąc wizytówkę twórczości Portera. Z czasem jednak kompozycja zaczyna coraz bardziej się rozbudowywać, a absolutnie szczytowym jej momentem stają się post-rockowe, mgliste gitary stowarzyszone z wchodzącym w falset (!) wokalem Johna Portera. Cud nad Wisłą i mocny kandydat do jednego z najlepszych utworów na rodzimej scenie w tym roku. Mam nadzieję, że muzycy planują wybór tej piosenki na singel.

Cieszy brzmienie albumu: po tym jak głośno zmiksowane zostało Me and That Man, przez co miejscami brakowało tamtej płycie dynamiki, tutaj jest zdecydowanie lepiej. Owszem, Porter często ma nałożony lekki przester na swój wokal, ale pasuje to wręcz idealnie. "Philosophia" opiera się w końcu na lekko garażowym brzmieniu i pomimo klarowności całości, dużo tu brudu i ziarna. Miłośnicy ukierunkowanego na retro, hard rockowego brzmienia z lat 70. powinni być ukontentowani - to ta sama szkoła brzmienia.

Co jeszcze więcej dodać? "Philosophia" działa po prostu jak dobre piwo - zaczyna jako towarzysz rozmowy, a gdy uderza do głowy, to dość na tyle niespodziewanie, by nie do końca się zorientować, kiedy do tego doszło. Z odejścia z Me and That Man John Porter wyszedł na pewno zwycięsko, a wzięcie Wojtka Mazolewskiego do współpracy było najlepszą decyzją, jaką mógł podjąć.

Trochę obawiałem się tego albumu, bowiem gdy do pomysłu zabierają się dwie skrajne osobowości czasami efekt staje się rozczarowujący. Tymczasem dwaj wspaniali i znani muzycy, jazzman Wojtek Mazolewski i rockman John Porter stworzyli „muzyczny wzorzec” i przygotowali niezwykle różnorodny ale składny materiał obejmujący zarówno pogodne ballady, bluesujące swingi, jak i mocne, rockowe „męskie granie”. Taka właśnie filozofia i koncepcja stała się syntezą zbudowania ciekawego brzmienia i nastroju. Album „Philosophia” nie jest jakimś przełomem artystycznym i muzycznym zaskoczenie, ale jest z pewnością ważnym nagraniem dzisiejszego rocka, subtelnością jazzu i wręcz przebojowej piosenki.

John Porter – „polski” Anglik, który w latach 70-tych zamieszkał w Polsce i tutaj wykreował swoja muzykę i karierę. Grał w Maanam, grał z Maciejem Zembatym ballady Cohena, nagrywał płyty solowe i w duecie z Anitą Lipnicką, a przede wszystkim był liderem legendarnego zespołu Porter Band. Wojtek Mazolewski człowiek, którego muzyka stanowi jeden z najlepszych polskich produktów eksportowych, niestrudzony propagator jazzu, grywający na całym świecie ze składami Pink Freud czy Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet.

Zarówno John Porter jak i Wojciech Mazolewski są „trade mark” współczesnej, polskiej sceny muzycznej. I nikt nie ma wątpliwości, że takie spotkanie powinno wywołać zgrabną sesję. Muzycy spotkali się po raz pierwszy podczas nagrywania albumu Wojtka Mazolewskiego „Chaos Pełen Idei” i być może wtedy zrodził się pomysł na wspólny album. „Philosophia” połączyła te dwa światy, w którym energetyczny świat jazzu i pomysły Wojtka Mazolewskiego spotykają balladowe, rockowe piosenki Johna Portera. Subtelny skład kwartetu ( duet Mazolewski/Porter uzupełniają znakomici muzycy: Piotr „Rubens” Rubik -gitara i Tomek „Harry” Wadowski -perkusja) tworzy nową muzyczną jakość, nachalnie wyróżniającą się wśród sztampowych, podobnych pomysłów. Congratulations Gentlemen !

1973 was another important year for British pop music. With the recent arrival of glam becoming very popular, Bryan Ferry's Roxy Music proved that "avant-garde rock" can be just as commercial, inspiring many underground bands to move towards a more streamlined sound.
This compilation is based on the songs that re-energized the UK singles chart in 1973 with catchy singles from Mott The Hoople, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Faces, Status Quo, Medicine Head, Nazareth and many more.
Live performances in the UK free festival scene were dominated by a new mix of hippie, glam and space rock, with the likes of The Pink Fairies and Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come joining the leaders of Hawkwind.

Niżej podpisany w pełni zgadza się z komentarzem autora okładki niniejszego wydawnictwa – legendarnym projektantem Rosławem Szaybo – że jego zawartość: „to najbliższa Komedzie muzyka, jaka powstała od 30 lat”. Mocne wrażenie robił już występ Kwintetu Mazolewskiego na ostatnim Festiwalu Muzyki Filmowej im. Krzysztofa Komedy, gdzie ten repertuar został przedstawiony z większym ogniem. To nieco zaskakujące, że gustujący raczej w muzycznych prowokacjach Mazolewski i jego zgrani kompani trafiają formą swych absolutnie współczesnych prezentacji najbliżej Komedowskiego ducha, a przecież nie mieli okazji słyszeć jego muzyki wykonywanej na żywo.

Być może jest to wynikiem, że pracowano nad albumem aż trzy lata. Mazolewski starał się nie tylko dotrzeć do nut oryginałów i książek o Komedzie, ale skontaktował się z jego przyjaciółmi, zobaczył gdzie zamieszkiwał, aby jak najbardziej poznać osobowość naszego najwspanialszego kompozytora muzyki jazzowej i filmowej. Dociekliwość lidera grupy przyniosła doskonałe rezultaty. Mimo bogactwa aranżacyjnego na płycie nie spotykamy udziwnień, co zawsze też cechowało twórczość Komedy. Mimo wielu zaskakujących rozwiązań zaproponowanych przez grupę Mazolewskiego, cały ten projekt jest owiany duchem romantyzmu i słowiańskiej rzewności tak charakterystycznym dla mistrza Komedy.

Album rozpoczyna się utworem tytułowym w dość minorowym nastroju, by wraz ze zdecydowanym wejściem dęciaków w introdukcji do Roman II wywołać zaskoczenie; dalej niepokojąca aura została przejęta przez skoczną sekcję rytmiczną. Są oczywiście na płycie utwory o charakterze balladowym jak: Le Depart, Dwaj ludzie z szafą, Bariera i Alleluja, ale najczęściej ekscytujący rytm perkusji czy ostrzejsze akordy fortepianu i basu wnoszą istotny element fermentu. Mazolewski świetnie wyczuł, że Komeda, choć był wizjonerem, to za fortepianem nie był awangardzistą za wszelką cenę, natomiast cenił w swych zespołach niespokojne duchy muzyczne, jak Tomasz Stańko, Rune Carlson, Zbigniew Namysłowski czy Michał Urbaniak.

Najbardziej rozbudowaną formę przybrał Astigmatic (choć znacznie krótszy niż w oryginale), w którym odwzorowano najistotniejsze motywy tego wielowątkowego utworu. Tu w partiach solowych zabłysnęli Duda, Török i Pospieszalski. Natomiast Mazolewski zręcznie wplótł w swój melancholijny popis fragment ze Sleep Safe and Warm. Forma tematu Crazy Girl zyskała najbardziej abstrakcyjną oprawę intrygujących akcentów perkusjonaliów i fortepianu do leniwie kreślącego temat saksofonu.

W tanecznym rytmie dęciaki grają melodię Ja nie chcę spać, by dać potem pole do czujnej wymiany myśli pomiędzy elokwentnym saksofonem i fortepianem elektrycznym. Oparty na porywistym rytmie Memory of Bach świetnie się broni wysmakowanymi solówkami i zbiorowym finałem. Najbardziej dosłownie przytoczonym tematem jest Sleep Safe and Warm, po którym następuje splot efektów elektroakustycznych towarzyszących solu Qby Janickiego, perkusja, perkusjonalia; fortepian elektryczny, przenoszą klimat wypowiedzi całkowicie w wymiar abstrakcji.

Ortodoksów może oburzyć finał (Ballad for Bernt), bowiem w dancingowym rytmie ska pląsa cały Kwintet. Jednakże, puszczając wodze fantazji, jeśliby Roman Polański miał więcej taśmy, nie można wykluczyć, że „Dwaj ludzie z szafą” trafiliby też na arenę cyrkową z jakimś absurdalnym numerem, a wtedy Komeda zaproponowałby do takiej sceny kawałek muzyczny właśnie w takim stylu. Album charakteryzuje unikatowe, eksperymentalne podejście zespołu do warstwy rytmicznej, zainspirowane dokonaniami Sun Ra i Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Jest ono niezwykle ważne dla zrozumienia idei albumu. Partie instrumentów perkusyjnych nagrywali wszyscy muzycy Quintetu, a część z nich – bez muzyki w odsłuchu. W ten sposób musieli intuicyjnie podchwycić rytm i puls. Wojtek Mazolewski podkreśla:

Ta muzyka przynosi antidotum na niełatwe czasy.




Spirit To All is the latest record by Polish bassist and composer Wojtek Mazolewski and his famed Quintet (WMQ). Mazolewski’s distinctive voice and vision are highly lauded and widely recognized for his contribution to the resurgence in Polish jazz and improv music on a global, crossover scale.

Leading his long-time quintet of Joanna Duda, Marek Pospieszalski, Oskar Török and Qba Janicki, Spirit To All is Mazolewski’s third Whirlwind Recordings release following Polka – Worldwide Deluxe Edition and When Angels Fall.

“Spirit To All was created as an answer to our spiritual needs,” explains Mazolewski, “during my preparations for recording I felt simultaneous connection between myself and everything around me. There was this urge within me to express my unity with the surroundings. The very same need was strongly felt by the band and the best way to express it was through the music.” From the start Mazolewski had clear intentions for the album: “Until 2020 we were touring the world and despite all the travel limitations that followed, we wanted to say: we are here, we are all in it together. This album is about spiritual needs, limitless and loving understanding, about compassionate development.”

The seven-piece record opens with title track ‘Spirit To All’. Inspired by spirituality, the melody contains both sad and joyous moments, mirroring the same juxtaposition of life. ‘Ghost Town’ is a sonic tale of a deserted place, focusing on the subtle consonance of the instruments. “It’s all about articulation, sonority and playing with sound,” explains Mazolewski.

‘The Power Of The People’ acts as a reminder of our strength and potential. This idea is manifested by cacophonous sections and robust melodies.

In contrast, ‘Slavic Spirits’ is a subtle atmospheric track. “‘Harmony’ is all we need to find best solutions for our future,” says Mazolewski and the track is a liberating realisation of that sentiment.

‘The Year Of Magical Thinking’ is a title borrowed from Joan Didion’s book about life’s suffering and how to use it to our gain. “This piece is about life’s journey - spiritual, internal and psychedelic at times,” reflects Mazolewski. ‘My Heart’ is gentle and “expresses our gratitude for life, closeness and love,” he says.

Speaking to the spirit in which the album was recorded, Mazolewski says: “I love the abstract arrhythmic sonic backgrounds of Sun Ra and Art Ensemble of Chicago, but there weren’t any other musicians available, so I decided that we would record all percussion instruments ourselves. In the recording room, some of us had instruments, some of us sang, but only a few of us were wearing headphones hearing the music. This meant the others had to intuitively find and feel the pulse. The experiment made the WMQ sound even richer and we had such great fun doing it.”

Having played together for over 10 years, WMQ share a deep and innate connection that’s palpable throughout their music. Spirit To All is a cathartic manifestation of Mazolewski’s inspiring intentions, “It made us come together again and reawaken the sense of adventure. We feel truly reborn as a band.”
