Po raz pierwszy w historii na płycie wyborny, cudem zachowany koncert Skaldów, zarejestrowany w niemieckim radio w 1972 roku. Data koncertu gwarantuje, typowo rockowe, progresywne granie.

'Live in Germany 1972' zawiera fragment koncertu, jaki grupa dała w lutym 1972 roku w Kolonii, a który transmitowany był przez rozgłośnię WDR.


Z mającą swoją siedzibę w Kolonii zachodnioniemiecką rozgłośnią Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) Skaldowie utrzymywali w pierwszej połowie lat 70. XX wieku znakomite kontakty. Był to przede wszystkim efekt przychylności pochodzącego z Prus Wschodnich jednego z redaktorów muzycznych radia, Hilmara Bachora. Dzięki jego wsparciu grupa często pojawiała się w Republice Federalnej Niemiec, a jej występy były nagrywane i emitowane na antenie (niestety, po emisji taśmy-matki kasowano, co po latach przysporzyło niemało kłopotów w dotarciu do rejestracji tamtych koncertów). Pamiątką po tej współpracy są wydane już wcześniej przez Kameleon Records albumy „Live in Germany 1974” (2012) oraz „Podróż magiczna” (2012), na którym pojawiła się nagrana na zamówienie WDR „Zimowa bajka” (czyli skrócona, instrumentalna wersja oratorium beatowego do poematu Heinricha Heinego „Deutschland – ein Wintermärchen”). Niedawno udało się natomiast dotrzeć do kolejnego materiału – występu z lutego 1972 roku, który ocalał tylko dlatego, że zafascynowany Skaldami Austriak Andrea F.G. Rascher zarejestrował go w dniu emisji radiowej na swój magnetofon szpulowy. Cały występ trwał ponoć godzinę; do dzisiaj zachowało się, niestety, niespełna 35 minut. Co jednak nie zmienia faktu, że i za te fragmenty powinniśmy być Rascherowi niezwykle wdzięczni.

W latach 60. i 70. ubiegłego wieku nie było w Polsce tradycji rejestrowania na płytach koncertów (debiutanckie albumy grup SBB i Krzak były wyjątkami); dlatego też nowe pokolenie fanów rocka, które z racji wieku nie miało możliwości posłuchać ówczesnych kapel na żywo, nie ma dzisiaj pojęcia, jak brzmieli podczas występów przed publicznością Czesław Niemen, Niebiesko-Czarni, Czerwone Gitary, Trubadurzy czy Skaldowie. Jedyne, co przetrwało, to rejestracje festiwalowe czynione na potrzeby Polskiego Radia bądź Polskiej Kroniki Filmowej. Problem jednak w tym, że w przypadku sporej części wykonawców, a zwłaszcza tych reprezentujących nurt nieco ambitniejszy, nie są one do końca reprezentatywne. Wystarczy sięgnąć chociażby po opublikowany w 2008 roku w serii „Z archiwum Polskiego Radia” czteropłytowy zestaw Skaldów, na który trafiły utwory wykonywane przez zespół braci Andrzeja i Jacka Zielińskich na festiwalach piosenki w Opolu, Kołobrzegu i Sopocie (pomiędzy 1966 a 1990 rokiem). Nie odnajdziemy tam żadnej z dłuższych kompozycji krakowskiej formacji – ani „Krywaniu, Krywaniu”, ani „Stworzenia świata część druga”; jedynym progresywnym fragmentem jest zagrane w Opolu w 1970 roku „Od wschodu do zachodu słońca”. Tym cenniejsze są więc odkrywane dzisiaj realizacje koncertowe z tamtych lat – nawet jeśli ich jakość, a tak jest, niestety, w przypadku albumu „Live in Germany 1972”, znacznie różni się od obowiązujących obecnie standardów.

Na zachowany w archiwum Andrei Raschera fragment koncertu Skaldów składa się pięć utworów i wcale nie są to kompozycje w tamtym momencie najnowsze. Przeciwnie, bracia Zielińscy sięgnęli również po utwory, które znalazły się na debiutanckiej płycie kapeli. Ile ich w sumie było, trudno orzec, nie znając całej rozpiski występu. Co natomiast przetrwało? Album otwiera wyjątkowo dynamiczne „Prawo Izaaka Newtona”, jeden z najlepszych kawałków z fantastycznego krążka „Od wschodu do zachodu słońca” (1970). Jacek i Andrzej Zielińscy zrobili w nim ukłon w stronę niemieckiej publiczności i kilka wersów – na początku, w środku i na finał – zaśpiewali w języku Goethego. Poza tym, co odróżnia tę wersję od studyjnego oryginału, młodszy z braci sięgnął również po trąbkę, by jeszcze bardziej wzbogacić brzmienie zespołu. Kolejny numer – piękna ballada „Zabrońcie kwitnąć kwiatom” – swoją płytową premierę miał na debiucie pięć lat wcześniej, pochodzi więc z typowo piosenkowego okresu działalności Skaldów. Ale niewiele pozostało w niej z big-beatowego oryginału – dość powiedzieć, że partię klawiszy Andrzej Zieliński zagrał na jak najbardziej rockowych Hammondach, a jego brat sięgnął po drugą gitarę, wspomagając tym samym, co nie zdarzało się zbyt często, Jerzego Tarsińskiego. Podobnie rzecz się miała z góralską przyśpiewką „Uciekaj, uciekaj”, która dzięki organom Hammonda i rockowo brzmiącej sekcji rytmicznej – Konrad Ratyński (bas) i Jan Budziaszek (bębny) – nabrała niesamowitej mocy. W takiej wersji mogłaby nawet spokojnie trafić na longplay „Krywań, Krywań” (1972).

Czwarte w kolejności „Wszystkim zakochanym” – pochodzące z krążka o tym samym tytule (1972) – też różni się znacznie od wersji studyjnej; przede wszystkim uboższe jest o orkiestrowe smyczki i żeński chórek, które choć znacznie wzbogacały brzmienie, to jednak nadawały tej kompozycji bardziej piosenkowy charakter. W wersji „na żywo” przeistoczył się on w zagrany wprawdzie z dużo mniejszym rozmachem, ale znacznie dynamiczniejszy kawałek, z po raz kolejny wysuniętymi na plan pierwszy Hammondami.

Podstawową część „Live in Germany 1972” zamyka 17-minutowa suita „Krywaniu, Krywaniu”. Biorąc pod uwagę, że koncert wyemitowany przez WDR odbył się w lutym 1972 roku, a płyta „Krywań, Krywań” (sic!) została nagrana dopiero trzy miesiące później – można uznać, że to, co słyszymy, to dopracowany już niemal do perfekcji, ale wciąż jednak jeszcze dość surowy szkic tej sztandarowej kompozycji Skaldów z ich okresu progresywnego. Brzmi tu ona tak samo fascynująco jak w wykonaniach studyjnych (vide zbierająca nagrania dokonane dla enerdowskiej rozgłośni radiowej płyta CD „Krywań Sessions 1971-1973”), a w uszy rzuca się przede wszystkim solówka Jacka Zielińskiego na skrzypcach, które z powodzeniem zastępują gitarę. Materiał WDR dopełnia późniejsze o rok „Gdzie mam ciebie szukać” z koncertu we wschodnioniemieckim Neubrandenburgu.

Pierwotnie numer ten opublikowano w NRD na składance „Hallo Nr. 9” (1973), w Polsce po raz pierwszy pojawił się natomiast na kompilacji Wydawnictwa 21 „Krywań – Out of Poland” (1999). W wersji live brzmi on, choć wciąż niedoskonale jeśli chodzi o jakość dźwięku, to jednak fantastycznie w kontekście wykonawczym. To rock progresywny na najwyższym światowym poziomie – z absolutnie zachwycającą solówką Tarsińskiego na gitarze i partią Jacka Zielińskiego na trąbce, który to instrument, biorąc pod uwagę ówczesnych tuzów zachodniego prog-rocka, był prawdziwym ewenementem i wyznacznikiem oryginalności polskiej formacji.

Żałować można tylko, że koncert z 1972 roku nie zachował się w całości i że jego jakość tak wiele pozostawia do życzenia. Gdyby nie te dwa, wcale nie drobne, mankamenty, mielibyśmy do czynienia z albumem rewelacyjnym, może nawet – obok dokonań SBB – z najwartościowszym krążkiem koncertowym w dziejach polskiego rocka. A tak mamy „jedynie” ekscytujący dokument pewnej fascynującej epoki.

Dokument smutnych czasów polskiego rocka. Zanim przebojem wdarły się grupy Porter Band i Maanam, pod koniec lat 70. rodzimy rock był utożsamiany z tzw. Muzyką Młodej Generacji. Zespoły pokroju Exodus, Kombi i Krzak z braku treści starały się zadziwić formą. Ostatnia z wymienionych formacji wykonywała instrumentalnego silesian bluesa, co już samo w sobie wywołuje ciarki, a jej brzmienie opierało się na zderzeniu skrzypiec z rockowym triem.

Jej debiutancki album "Blues Rock Band Live" nagrano na koncercie w 1979 roku, a wydano dwa lata później w wersji mocno obrobionej w studiu. Muzycznie jest to męczący "paw", ale obecne wydanie sprawi radość kolekcjonerom. Po raz pierwszy mamy pełną wersję występu bez jakichkolwiek poprawek, a pod względem edytorskim reedycję można stawiać za wzór.

Most death metal colors itself in monochromatic shades of violent red, but Frozen Soul plays it frosty with their take on classic death metal. Never offering obvious tribute to any of the bands most commonly worshipped, their strength instead lies in taking a chugged riff powered by double bass and making it groove without compromising its heaviness. There’s no blackened anything on their sophomore album Glacial Domination—just a blizzard of sub-arctic riffs that chill to the bone.

The Fort Worth, Texas band set themselves apart from much of today’s death metal masses in part by how Chad Green’s vocals become an essential part of the songs. Not only are his growls articulate enough to make their narrative clear as ice, but it’s evident he played a huge role in the song writing process rather than just allowing the vocals to be an afterthought. The vocals are prominent in the mix, rather than a guttural pulse that blends into the low end.

Green has said that the death of his younger brother inspired the lyrics behind their latest album. This catharsis is hidden behind a shroud of snowy metaphor as most of the songs deal with monsters bringing about a violent hateful end to mankind. An entertaining enough message, but we can assume the lyrical alchemy that transformed this into a healing process merely employ these concepts as a vehicle for underlying grief. Green’s phrasing makes the lyrics tangible in concept with the grace of bands like Carcass or Obituary, placing the songs first, rather than being heavy for the sake of heavy.

Drummer Matt Dennard has a keen second sense as to how and when double bass should be used in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. The key here being: not all the time. Nor do the drums simply bury you in a dense barrage. Some of the credit goes to the excellent production value, coupled with a smart mix, which allows the instrumentation to breathe even when coming at you with as much weight as the guitars. Even at the album’s crunchiest on the title track, the group keep everything hooky and melodic. It’s this balance that not only keeps the album listenable but make it fun, rather than just being extreme ear torture.

One of the album’s highlights is “Assimilator,” a fitting ode to John Carpenter’s The Thing, given its sub-zero horrors. And much as that classic film was remade decades later, this band takes the heart of classic death metal and gives it a fresh coat of effects, with the hammering chug being possessed by one of the best guitar tones I have heard committed to an album in some time. The last three songs find them very invested in their fetish for all things cold. Where “Abominable” evokes the Abominable Snowman, it’s more like the Attack on Titan version of the frosty cryptid as the lyrics speak of it bringing about the apocalypse.

Frozen Soul, delightfully, also prove themselves to be fans of huge fans of huge monsters, with the final song on Glacial Domination, “Atomic Winter,” taking on Godzilla. It crunches across a similar cold sonic landscape as the other songs. It wraps up an outstanding second album from the band, delivering aggressive death metal for a winter wasteland. Glacial Domination is an essential lesson in metal mastery, and one of death metal’s best albums so far this year.
