Wydany w 1971 roku przez BASF, wspaniały, debiutancki album niemieckiego zespołu zainspirowanego dokonaniami Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Amon Dull II i Popol Vuh (lider Gili współpracował potem z tą grupą), stylistycznie przypominający bardzo długą i podzieloną na sześć części wersję 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene'!

Bardzo przestrzenne, nieco kosmiczne brzmienie, bardzo mało (brytyjskich) wokali, wszechobecne gitary, doskonała produkcja i świetny, naturalny dźwięk.
To jest jeden z dziesięciu najlepszych albumów z Niemiec!




Debiut Gila jest jedną z najbardziej kanonicznych płyt kraut-rockowych i gdyby ktoś chciał się dowiedzieć, czym ten kraut się je, to z czystym sumieniem można mu polecić ten krążek na początek.

To nie jest takie zwykłe zaćpane pitolenie, jak to czasami z krautem bywało. To jest muzyczny koncept-album. Spójrzmy na tytuły, posłuchajmy muzyki - to się układa w pewna całość. Z tego co też słychać na płycie, wynika, że najpierw był pomysł, a dopiero potem "obudowano" go muzyką pasujacą do tytułów poszczególnych utworów. "Agression" to ciężki blues-psych-rockowy numer z rozbudowaną, dynamiczną partia gitarową (i pięknie zaakcentowanym basem w drugiej części), "Kommunikation" jest bardziej stonowane, gitarzysta nie wymiata jak w "Agression", gra nieco odleciane, ładne solowki. Powinniśmy zwrócic uwagę jakie to jest uporządkowane granie. Tu nie ma miejsca na żaden chaos, przypadek. Ma ta muzyka swój początek w improwizacjach, ale potem te pomysły dopracowano, "dopieszczono" i dopiero w takiej formie trafiły na płytę. I cała płyta jest też tak starannie dopracowana. To też wyróżnia "Gila" spośród wielu innych podobnego rodzaju, ktore potrafiły być brzmieniowo bardzo, bardzo surowe - doslownie co się nagrało, to na plastik, bez żadnej studyjnej obróbki. A tutaj mamy do czynienia z normalną, uczciwa produkcją. I to jak na owe czasy bardzo dobrą produkcją.

Pink Floyd? Jasne. Tylko, że do tej pory dylemat kto kim się bardziej inspirował - Floydzi krautem, czy kraut Floydami - nie został do końca rozsztrzygnięty. Słyszymy tu dźwięki, które wcześniej Pink Floyd już siebie wydobył, na przykład na "Ummagummie", tyle, że to tylko pewne pomysły brzmieniowe, aranżacyjne, "napędzające" jednak inną muzykę. Chyba najbardziej floydowski jest "Kontakt", akustyczny numer, zagrany na dwie gitary, przypominjacy na przykład "Fearless".

Na poczatku napisałem, że ten album to kanoniczny kraut. Teraz nie wiem, czy tak jest na pewno. To znaczy na pewno tak jest, ale czy ktoś, nie zarzuci mi, że Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Duul II, czy Guru Guru nie są bardziej kraut, a "Gila" przy nich to mainstream. Ale jedno jest pewne - ten krążek pod względem kultury muzycznej, produkcji bije na głowę olbrzymią większość twórczości bardziej ortodoksyjnych kraut-rockerów. To w ogóle jeden z najlepszych niemieckich albumów z muzyką rockową tamtych czasów. A obecnie szacowny klasyk, grzejący się w blasku zasłużonej chwały.

Gila w zasadzie było takim jednorazowym wydarzeniem. Co prawda jest jeszcze druga płyta "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" z 1973 roku, ale to juz całkiem inna muzyka - zwykłe prog-folkowe piosenki, nawet niezłe, ale to już nie było to. A z całego składu pozostał wtedy tylko gitarzysta, Conny Veit, reszta byli to już zupełnie nowi ludzie.

Bezwarunkowo - jazda obiązkowa dla każdego szanującego się fana rocka.

PS. Często też ten album występuje jako "Gila - Free Electric Sound".
