Maroon 5 – amerykańska grupa wykonująca muzykę z pogranicza rocka i popu. Zespół powstał w latach 90. i działał jako Kara's Flowers. W 2001 roku muzycy zmienili nazwę na Maroon 5 i wydali swój pierwszy album, Songs About Jane, który promowali podczas trasy koncertowej w USA. Zespół współpracował m.in. z Robem Thomasem czy Kanye Westem oraz wystąpił podczas koncertu Live 8 w 2005 roku w Filadelfii.

Grupa jest znana przede wszystkim z takich przebojów, jak: „Harder to Breathe”, „This Love”, „She Will Be Loved”, „Sunday Morning”, „Makes Me Wonder”, „Misery”, „Moves Like Jagger”, „Payphone”, „One More Night”, „This Summer’s Gonna Hurt like a Motherfucker”, „Sugar”, „Daylight”, „Girls like You” oraz „Memories”.

Wydany w 2002 roku album Songs About Jane nie odniósł początkowo wielkiego sukcesu, jednak dzięki singlowi „This Love” muzycy zostali zauważeni przez większą publiczność. Album osiągnął status złotej, platynowej i podwójnej platyny. Zespół w 2005 roku wydał Live – Friday the 13th, na której znalazł się ostatni koncert z ich trasy, który odbył się 13 maja w Santa Barbara w Kalifornii.

We wrześniu 2006 roku zespół z powodu nieuleczalnej kontuzji ręki opuścił Ryan Dusick – perkusista; został zastąpiony przez Matta Flynna.

Po przerwie zespół powrócił w maju 2007, wydając album It Won't Be Soon Before Long. Pierwszy singel „Makes Me Wonder” osiągnął 1. miejsce w Billboard 200 i sprzedał się w ponad 400 tysiącach egzemplarzy.

Czterej członkowie Maroon 5 (A. Levine, R. Dusick, M. Madden i J. Carmichael) zaczynali karierę w szkole średniej, grając we własnym zespole Kara's Flowers, powstałym w roku 1994. Swój pierwszy koncert zagrali w kalifornijskim klubie Whiskey. Rok po tym występie podpisali kontrakt z wytwórnią fonograficzną. W 1997 roku wydano ich debiutancki album, The fourth world, który nie zdobył wielkiej popularności. Tymczasem Valentine grywał na gitarze w zespole Square, który 10 czerwca 2000 roku zagrał wspólny koncert z Kara's Flowers. Chłopcy zaprzyjaźnili się i 24 maja 2001 przyjęli Jamesa do swojej grupy, zrywając kontrakt z wytwórnią i zmieniając nazwę na Maroon. Jak tłumaczy Ryan, zmiana nazwy była spowodowana głównie „przekręcaniem” jej przez słuchaczy, mówiono np. „Cars and Flowers”. Ponieważ jednak istniała już grupa o nazwie Maroon, to zespół dodał cyfrę „5” na końcu i tak powstał Maroon 5.

25 czerwca 2002 do sprzedaży trafił album Songs About Jane. Znalazło się na nim 12 autorskich kompozycji. Jako pierwszy singel wydano „Harder To Breathe”, który nie odniósł większego sukcesu. Hitem stała się natomiast piosenka „This Love”. Rozpoznawalność zyskali także dzięki utworowi „She Will Be Loved”.

W roku 2006 grupa została uhonorowana nagrodą Grammy dla „najlepszego nowego artysty”, a album „Songs About Jane” sprzedał się w ponad 10 milionach egzemplarzy.

Maroon 5 koncertowali z Michelle Branch, Nikka Costa i Vanessa Carlton, Graham Colton, John Mayer oraz Counting Crows. W kwietniu 2005 towarzyszyli The Rolling Stones. Grali z Gavinem DeGraw, Matchbox Twenty, Sugar Ray, Phantom Planet, Big City Rock, The Like, Simon Dawes, Jason Mraz, The Thrills, Thirsty Merc, Marc Broussard, The Donnas i Steviem Wonderem.

Podczas ich trasy Honda Civic Tour z zespołu odszedł perkusista Ryan Dusick (śpiewający również w chórkach) z powodu nieuleczalnej kontuzji nadgarstka. Zastąpił go grający wcześniej m.in. z Gavinem DeGraw, czy z zespołem The B-52's – Matt Flynn. Na trasie nagrano DVD oraz wydano album ze zdjęciami z trasy, „Midnight Miles”, zrobionymi przez Wray McCann.

...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

Nie wiem czy zacząć rysem historycznym czy pisać od razu o muzyce. Tradycyjnie chyba jednak przełączę się w tryb „living in the past” i opiszę w kilku zdaniach złożonych moje spotkanie z tą kasetą czyli płytą. Jakaś klasowa wycieczka z licealną pierwszą klasą do wielkiego miasta. Nie przypomnę sobie czy był to film, czy jakąś wystawa maszyn rolniczych na Targach Poznańskich, ale przed planowaną główną atrakcją wycieczki dostaliśmy czas wolny. Każdy rozbiegł się po wielkim mieście by załatwić swoje planowane wcześniej sprawy. Pewnie gdyby wtedy był tam McDonald to większość z nas by tam pobiegła. Oczywiście ja nie, bo walczyłem już wtedy nieświadomie z systemem i macdonaldyzacją społeczeństwa. Pobiegłem więc do sklepu muzycznego i wypatrzyłem dopiero co wydaną kasetę „Your Eyes” promowaną w ówczesnym trójkowym Brumie za sprawą utworów „Parada Wspomnień" i Generał Ferreira (teraz zwątpiłem, czy wtedy już emitowano „Brum”?

Tak czy inaczej od tego momentu „Your Eyes” nie była wyciągana z magnetofonu, jeździła w kółko cały czas. Stąd też zapewne mój brak dystansu do tego wydawnictwa. Brak dystansu, bo naczytałem się wielu niepochlebnych opinii o tym albumie z którymi totalnie się nie zgadzam, dla mnie na tej płycie są same wartościowe kultowe numery. Początek płyty mocne i ostre petardy Czterej Głupcy, Tata W Gestapo i „Zgroza” I tak mogę wymienić całą płytę. Może brzmienie płyty zdaje się być dość syntetyczne mało tu głębi, ale numery są na tyle nośne że mi to ostatecznie nie przeszkadza, a jeśli do tego dołożyć fakt, że Kazimierz pisze teksty takie za jakie się go ceni i szanuje to nie rozumiem wszelakich zarzutów pod adresem tego wydawnictwa.

Jeden z najlepszych fragmentów tego krążka to dla mnie 6 Lat Później z linią basu, która wtedy była dla mnie najwspanialszą jaką słyszałem i miedzy innymi ten utwór przekonał mnie do tego, że jeśli kiedykolwiek miałbym sięgnąć po jakiś instrument to będzie to gitara basowa. Tak też się stało kilka miesięcy potem, ale to już zupełnie inna historia. Jakbym się nie przyczepił, to nie widzę tu kompozycji, które są słabe. To jeszcze mój Kult.

"Marność" takie teksty zapadły mi w pamięć na całe życie. Fajnie być nastolatkiem i chłonąc takie utwory. Wychowacza funkcja rockendrola? Jak najbardziej. "Barrum"- lekcja historii i socjologii współczesnej? Tak owszem. Powszechnie niezbyt chyba lubiana i niedoceniana płyta. Dla mnie za to jedna z ważniejszych.

MTV’s embrace of splashy, expensive videos helped hard rock go mainstream in the ’80s—much to the chagrin of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), a committee that condemned the supposedly unsavoury music of artists such as Twisted Sister and Def Leppard. This disapproving stance misunderstood the genre’s ever-rebellious spirit and overlooked the creative explosions of ’80s hard rock. Some bands wielded glossy keyboards and pop hooks like their New Wave peers; others doubled down on the breakneck tempos and aggressive riffs that had first become popular thanks to ’70s heavies. The end result is that ’80s hard rock became a broad movement encompassing New Wave of British Heavy Metal power (Iron Maiden), radio-ready rock (Bon Jovi) and sleazy hair metal (Mötley Crüe). Although the latter movement faded soon after the ’80s ended, hard rock itself remained a permanent commercial force buoyed even more by the looming grunge and nu-metal explosions.

After a decade of hair bands singing about wild times and fast living, hard rock in the ’90s turned darker, heavier and meaner. This can be credited to the commercial success of a wave of bands emerging from outside the mainstream. Metallica’s bulldozing arena anthems reflect their thrash-metal roots, Nirvana’s grunge revolution delivered the angst of underground rock to MTV, Rage Against the Machine’s politically charged attacks reflected their days in the hardcore scene and Tool’s harsh nihilism grew out of the fringes of alt-metal. Outside of Guns N’ Roses, who managed to score some awfully big hits early in the decade, few veteran pop-metal acts survived these seismic shifts. It wouldn’t be until the tail end of the ’90s that a brash young MC from Detroit calling himself Kid Rock would help revive high-volume party music with his infectious mix of swaggering rock riffs and megaton hip-hop beats.

The commercial resiliency of alt-metal and post-grunge really is astonishing. After all, many of the biggest hits of the 2010s came from veteran hard rockers (Disturbed, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin) rooted in these ’90s subgenres. Exceptions emerged, of course. While Greta Van Fleet’s Led Zeppelin-inspired rave-ups and Ghost’s doom-metal nightmares may seem, at first blush, radically different from each other, the success of both reflected the growing number of young acts revisiting ’70s metal. Even Denmark’s Volbeat, around since the mid-2000s, finally broke in the United States thanks largely to their classic metal riffs. The mainstreaming of metalcore and hardcore also warrants mentioning: Bring Me the Horizon and A Day to Remember gradually attained stardom thanks to their knack for mixing furious breakdowns with sparkling pop productions. It represented a genuinely fresh twist and perhaps a sign of future developments for hard rock.
