Chaos Over Cosmos to projekt dość specyficzny, chociaż trend, którym podąża, wraz z rozwojem technologii w niedalekiej przyszłości może stać się czymś powszechnym. Nie mam tu na myśli muzyki samej w sobie, chociaż ta wypełniająca The Ultimate Multiverse również jest czymś intrygującym, ale o tym za chwilę. Zespół tworzą Polak Rafał Bowman oraz Australijczyk Joshua Ratcliff. Całość była tworzona i nagrywana na odległość. Nie mam informacji, czy obaj Panowie mieli w ogóle okazję poznać się na żywo, ale przypuszczam, że nie.

Ogólnie twórczość duetu można opisać jako dość specyficzny miks klimatów metalowych (trochę heavy, trochę metalu progresywnego, momentami nawet lekkie uśmiechy w stronę bardziej ekstremalnych podgatunków), około-metalowych (djent tu się przewija niemalże bez przerwy) oraz elektroniki. Być może część metalowych ortodoksów czytając powyższe zdanie odpuści sobie tę płytę, ale ci bardziej otwarci powinni poczuć się nieco zaintrygowani.

The Ultimate Multiverse składa się zaledwie z sześciu utworów. Spójrzmy na przykład na otwierający całość Cascadian Darkness, który zaczyna się trochę… folkowo. I zaznaczam, że nie chodzi mi tu absolutnie o brzmienie. Mam raczej na myśli riffy. Później dostajemy ciekawe partie klawiszy na przemian z czysto progresywnymi gitarowymi zagrywkami. Dość interesującym elementem jest tu wokal. Dostajemy tutaj hard core’owy skrzek momentami przechodzący w coś a’la growl. Nie zabrakło też czystych partii wokalnych. Są one lekko zmodyfikowane komputerowo, jednak absolutnie w tym przypadku to nie razi, wręcz przeciwnie – fragmenty te kojarzą mi się z Burtonem C. Bellem z Fear Factory.

Zacząłem się zastanawiać do czego jeszcze można porównać twórczość duetu. Jeśli spojrzeć na naszą rodzimą scenę, do głowy przyszła mi nazwa Hermetic Evolution. Przynajmniej jeśli spojrzymy na te czysto djentowe elementy. Z zagranicznych nazw mógłbym tu wskazać After The Burial, jeśli pod uwagę weźmiemy zadziorność, z drugiej strony elementy progresywne, których tu nie brakuje mogą przywodzić na myśl twórczość na przykład takiego Teramaze. Nie liczcie jednak, że sięgając po tę płytę traficie na klon któregoś ze wspomnianych bandów.

Propozycja Chaos Over Cosmos to muzyka, którą ciężko jednoznacznie zaszufladkować i przypiąć jej jakąś konkretną etykietę. Z drugiej strony nie wszystko musi być katalogowane. Widać, że grupa czerpie swe muzyczne inspiracje z różnych źródeł, tworząc tym samym swój własny muzyczny pejzaż. Plusem na pewno jest tu produkcja. Jak na wydawnictwo niezależne, jest ona po prostu wyśmienita i brak jej jakichkolwiek mankamentów. The Ultimate Multiverse to jedna z ciekawszych pozycji, które w tym zwariowanym zeszłym roku zaszczyciły swą obecnością polski rynek muzyczny.

Rozwój techniki sprawił, że świat jest mniejszy. Tego stwierdzenia używa się zazwyczaj jeśli chodzi o możliwość podróżowania, czy zasięg informacji. Gdzieś dwie dekady temu, możliwości sprzętowe umożliwiły muzykowanie i rejestrację albumów nie tylko w gigantycznych studiach, ale i w zaciszach domowych. Wówczas to jak grzyby po deszczu wyrastały jednoosobowe projekty. Obecnie obserwujmy w tej dziedzinie trend nieco odmienny. Jakość sieci i zwiększenie przepływu informacji, umożliwia współtworzenie muzyki na odległość. Takim refleksyjnym wstępem chciałem nawiązać do CHAOS OVER COSMOS – projektu studyjnego, który obecnie tworzą Polak i Australijczyk. Zresztą nie tylko forma przedsięwzięcia pobudziła mnie do tego typu rozważań. Muzyka, którą tworzą jest bowiem bardzo plastyczna.

Ostatnimi czasy przez mój odtwarzacz przewinęło się kilka płyt AYREON, a przeglądając archiwa z przyjemnością przypomniałem sobie PROJECT CREATION, w kosmicznym klimacie zbliżonym do rock-opery. Nastroiło mnie to i przygotowało grunt pod obcowanie z „The Ultimate Multiverse”. Sama marka CHAOS OVER COSMOS była znana mi już wcześniej. Osłuchiwałem na bandcamp poprzednie wydawnictwa – i przyznam że odpowiadały mi muzycznie, za to nie do końca wokalnie. Nowa produkcja okazuje się zdecydowanym krokiem naprzód w tej dziedzinie. Nie dość, że niewiele można zarzucić kompozycjom to i za mikrofonem dzieje się więcej… i lepiej.
Omawiany album to właściwie kombinacja dwóch poprzednich EPek, choć jeśli spojrzymy na spis utworów, to nie jest to odwzorowanie 1:1.

Cześć kompozycji, zawartych na albumie wydaje się oscylować przede wszystkim w klimatach nowoczesnych. Mamy tu do czynienia z tyglem metalowych brzmień i elektroniki. Przemieszały się tutaj zarówno nowoczesne formy, powiedziałbym z ukłonem w stronę djentu (i nie chodzi mi o niskie zestrojenie, co bardziej sposób riffowania, rytmikę i budowanie solówek), przez blackmetal w swojej atmosferycznej odmianie, po przestrzenne klimaty rockopery i electropop. Całość dość zgrabnie trzyma się kupy i co do konstrukcji kompozycji nie mam uwag – jest naprawdę klawo. Zastosowanie różnych barw wokalnych sprawia, że podświadomie odbieram tę płytę jako krok do jeszcze bardziej ambitnej formy. Czysty głos, blackowe growle czy szepty sugestywnie wydają się przecież podziałem na role. Elektronika – to zdecydowanie warty wspomnienia element. Kłaniają się tu Jarre i Vangelis. Zwłaszcza, że kosmiczne patenty tworzą w głowie wymaganą przestrzeń, a typowe 8-bitowe brzmienia kojarzą się jednoznacznie z futurystycznymi klimatami informatycznymi.

Owszem posiadam pewne krytyczne spostrzeżenia. Momentami jest chyba zbyt gęsto, przez co zatraca się pewna organiczność i forma przypomina nam brutalnie, że mamy do czynienia z projektem studyjnym. Druga sprawa do czyste wokalizy. Momentami głos sięga nieakceptowalnych przeze mnie rejestrów (wypisz wymaluj jak w ARCTURUS). Ale suma summarum podoba mi się, to co wyszło pod szyldem CHAOS OVER COSMOS. Całokształt klimatu… grafiki (jak ulał pasuje tu nawet użyta czcionka), tematyka i w końcu sama muzyka. Widzę w tym potencjał i cieszy mnie rozwój projektu.

This album is packed to the brim with tight, technical riffage and lush synth pads. Chaos Over Cosmos draw heavily from melodic death metal and classic prog metal, and they blend it into something exciting and complex.



Progressive metal is taking a million new forms in recent years, with all the djent and avant-garde experimenting going on. The phenomenon is exciting, but then the traditional prog metal feel is less prominent in freshly emerging acts. Chaos Over Cosmos is an entity that has its prog firmly rooted in the classic progressive power metal style. The Polish/Australian duo hearkens back most significantly to Symphony X in terms of song structures, riffs and lead sections, so the sophomore full length “The Ultimate Multiverse” is bound to appeal to fans of said band. Yet there’s an extra twist to the style approached by Rafal and Joshua, and that is the sci-fi cosmic theme, already indicated by the band name and album title.

The Ultimate Multiverse consists of 6 rather lengthy tracks (revolving around 7-8 minutes) with a lot of recurring components but also distinguishing elements in each piece. It’s a fairly diverse output, but not overbearing in any way. There’s a certain degree of memorable hooks, but the songs don’t follow any template, going through multiple different phases in each piece. Past the structural side of the music, these guys are definitely proficient musicians and inspired composers. The songs are engaging and dynamic, but also expressive, fully immersing the listener in the spacey vibe of the album’s theme. I could totally see Star Wars scenes as music videos to these tracks.

The star of the show is definitely the guitar here. Rafal has his shred skill and riff drive together, weaving hooky themes with fast paces through the riffs and eloquent virtuous solos. The melodic ideas are gold, with a neo-classic Yngwie feel, but more expressive than challenging, and I’m a sucker for the tapping ideas and the high solo count, with multiple lead sections per track. And getting a bit out of the prog power area, the lead style actually reminded me of Aaron Marshall and Intervals, connecting Chaos Over Cosmos to the new wave of prog branches, most prominent in the third track “Worlds Apart”. This one is also probably the most technical of the lot, with the fastest guitar parts and the most intense drum sections, fusing tech-death instrumental. I love the high octane of the frequently used double kicks in this song. One downside that shows up however is the use of programmed drums, which takes away from the authenticity/intensity of the music, but it’s not a deal breaker. The compositional aspect of the drums is great though with sick transitions and grooves. Rhythmically the songs also have sick tempo changes.

Past the programmed drums, the second department where Chaos Over Cosmos loses a few points is in the vocals. This is primarily an instrument focused record with extended parts where the vocals don’t even show, so again, not a deal breaker, but the vocals are very processed to the extent where the harsh vocals are more like gritty whispers and the cleans are mudded out a bit around the edge, taking away from how intelligible they would be otherwise. I am a hi-fi freak however so personal bias included. But a silver lining is that the fuzzy edge around the vocals also weirdly works in the band’s favor. It becomes suggestive of robotic voices or almost as the singing comes through some radio transmission from space, going along nicely with the theme. And while we’re back at spacey vibes, the icing on this cosmic cake comes through the keyboards/programming/effects. With an electronic backbone, the atmospheric side of the band’s sound is the strongest asset in delivering the cosmic alien feel. Some effects even hearken back to 80’s disco sounds which also brings a nostalgic side with it.

Summing up, Chaos Over Cosmos is a rather diverse journey through space, well fitted for prog folks, gamers and stargazers alike. It has a few bugs, but the band has solid musical proficiency and expressive qualities, which make “The Ultimate Universe” an overall success.

My Last Chapter:
The latest release in the sarcastic, semi-nihilistic, pissed Anatomi-71 way we’ve all come to love. I was expecting something quite grand and powerful-as-hell, but to be perfectly honest the initial few minutes had me feeling very ambivalent seeing as God natt altruism is just way too rock-driven. Now don’t get me wrong; I do seriously dig the tune (and the intro is wicked), but I’ve always had a problem with rock & roll guitar wankery and solos, so I was afraid Från primat till reptil would contain too damn much of this, which left me hesitant and skeptic.

Something I haven’t realized before is how many similarities to Totalitär can be found in Anatomi-71’s sound; the riffing in Hip skit, for one, is just pure Tottis worship. And while there are flairs not-so-common back in the days, this is pretty much pure 80ies crustcore of the Swedish school. The d-beat is ever so present, and the drumming of Putte is incredibly powerful, pushing the songs forward in a magnificent manner. A lot of its power and impact is thanks to the sweet production, which is just bloody marvelous in balancing between clean and raw. The drumming really comes at you just as the riffing creates a massive wall of sound for the three aggressive set of vocals to push the envelope forward. As always the lyrics are supreme with a spiteful, ironic manner not found elsewhere in the genre. There’s a bit of a theme going on, from the title (roughly translated to “from primate to reptile”), artwork and lyrics, but without losing their trademark personal apocalyptic visions.

As already stated the drumming’s just top notch, and the same goes for the riffing since it’s an endless stream of hard-hitting catchiness. There’s not a moment of dullness, not a second of blandness, and Från primat till reptil is undoubtedly Anatomi-71’s strongest release to date. A supreme crustcore experience that even includes a stoner-esque doom track called Omen. It’s a fantastic tune with killer bass play, and comes off a bit as if S:T Erik teamed up with Griftegård for a punk session.
Utter aggression, extremely adrenaline inducing, masterfully delivered in a manner no other band can replicate. A must have of 2011.

Cholera, wiem, że Greg lubi wydawać rzeczy dziwne, nietypowe i uznawane w naszym metalowym grajdołku często za herezję dla kultu stali (przypominam, że Cuiavian Sanhedrin wydał wyrok na Potężnego Wydawcę za zdradę black metalu), ale gdy pojawiły się pierwsze zajawki Ifryta w postaci zdjęć, to stwierdziłem, że to przebiło nawet dziwactwa Gruzji. Szczególnie singiel „Straszne Rzeczy”, który był dziesięciominutowym blenderem dla mózgu, przez co zebrał dość srogi opierdol od wielu.

Tymczasem EPka „Płuca” okazała się miłym zaskoczeniem, bo wspomniany wcześniej singiel jest tylko jednym z trzech zawartych na niej utworów. I pierwsze dwa całkiem mocno podbijają jej poziom. Zaskakująco mocno.

Na wjazd dostajemy liścia w postaci „Klucza Salomona”, a ja łapię się na tym, że słyszę tam trochę starego KATa, jak również echa Sabbat (ej, kurwa gdzie z tymi pochodniami i widłami! Nie kłamię!). Nie będę ukrywał, że ten kawałek to przepyszna arcychłosta, która szybko zapada w pamięć sprawiając, że główka kiwa się do rytmu z uznaniem. Dalej wjeżdża „Kona Allah”, który jest odświeżoną wersją, obecną wcześniej na demówce. Jest krzynkę gorzej, ale nada słucha się przyjemnie, bo wciąż jest przyjemny czarci odór Romka oraz spółki. No i ostatni utwór „Straszne Rzeczy”, przez który chyba przyklepano Ifrytowi łatkę „awangardowego metalu”. Ech, kurwa, jak ja się dla Was poświęcam, bo do recenzji musiałem również wielokrotnie słuchać także tego czegoś. Z jednej strony można powiedzieć, że to zapis snów: chaotyczny, urwany, bezsensowny bełkot zlepiony ze strzępków znanych tylko samemu śniącemu, co przełożyło się na groteskowy efekt końcowy. Ale niestety, jestem starym, zblazowanym chujem i tego już nie kupuję. Jest zbyt pojebane, jak również mam wrażenie, że momentami Ifryt chce tam być na siłę zabawny. Za dużo, za mocno.

Jak już wcześniej wspomniałem, to naprawdę dobra EPka, mimo, iż ostatni kawałek bardzo stara się to zmienić. Z tego, co widziałem, za całość intrumentarium (poza solówkami gitarowymi) odpowiada jeden dostojny mąż i przyznaję, że wyszło mu to naprawdę dobrze. Świetnie wypada również wokal Szramy, który naprawdę pasuje do tego typu łomotu. Tworzy to wesołą mieszankę, która dała mi naprawdę sporo frajdy.

Warto zapoznać się z „Płucami”, bo może, ku Waszemu zdumieniu, będziecie całkiem zadowoleni. O ile pominiecie ten ostatni kawałek. Trochę wahałem się z oceną, jednak okoliczność nucenia „Klucza Salomona” przeważyła.

P.S. Widzę, że niektórych dziwi/brzydzi, że Greg wydaje takie kurioza, ale po tym, jak podzielił się kiedyś linkiem do Old Nick „The Night Of The Ambush And The Pillage By The Queen Ann Styl’d Furniture, Animated By One Of The Dozen Or So Spells That Thee Eastern Vampyre Has Studied (T​.​N​.​O​.​T​.​A​.​A​.​T​.​P​.​B​.​T​.​Q​.​A​.​S​.​F​.​A​.​B​.​O​.​O​.​T​.​D​.​O​.​S​.​S​.​T​.​T​.​E​.​V​.​H​.​S)”, to przestało mnie cokolwiek zaskakiwać.
