Koncert został zarejestrowany w opuszczonym kościele we wrześniu 2020 roku i był transmitowany jako livestream, wyznaczając absolutnie nowe standardy dla tego typu eventów.

Podczas zrealizowanego przez Grupę 13 show, Behemoth zaprezentował najważniejsze utwory ze swojej dotychczasowej kariery. Całość została podzielona na cztery części, podczas których nie zabrakło spektakularnych efektów specjalnych i teatralnych. To trzeba koniecznie zobaczyć!


The live music industry was hit hard by the pandemic, with tours having to be postponed or canceled. In this difficult time, artists have been navigating through the situation by live streaming shows wherein the audience can watch the show online from the comfort of their homes by purchasing a ticket for the event. Following the trend, black metal giants BEHEMOTH have gone above and beyond with their two-hour-long immersive live-streamed performance, In Absentia Dei.

In Absentia Dei was performed and live-streamed from an abandoned church in Poland where the music video for ‘Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel’ was shot years ago. The entire show was filmed in 4K with incredible lighting and pyrotechnics among several other visually captivating elements for an absolutely mind-blowing experience.

The performance started with a free pre-show which featured interviews with BEHEMOTH’s band members and some footage of the venue, which is a former Evangelical church that stopped being in service over 100 years ago. The interviews and behind the scenes footage were followed by a smashing set by Brooklyn-based metallers, Imperial Triumphant live-streamed from The Slipper Room in New York City. Personally, this was the first time I was listening to the band. That being said, their performance was nothing short of gripping. Big ups to BEHEMOTH to introduce me (among others, I believe) to this brilliant band. The short but visually and auditorily engaging half-hour set was just setting the scene for what was about to come.

Sitting on my couch with a cup of coffee is definitely not how I pictured my second experience of watching BEHEMOTH to be. The theatrical extravaganza, split into four parts, is the first time BEHEMOTH has played that many songs at a single show. After a wait of about 20 minutes post the pre-show, Act I kicked off with images of the band members, masked and riding horses towards the church which was in flames. The live debut of ‘Evoe’, from the band’s latest offering, A Forest is how they started their performance. Act I also saw them play ‘Prometherion’ and ‘From the Pagan Vastlands’ for the first time since 2011 and 2009, respectively. There was a little bit of a technical setback towards the end of Act I wherein the footage was pausing and stalling. However, this was resolved promptly as the show proceeded.
Act II started off with visuals of a masked figure circling a lantern and almost joining the band for a dance as they played ‘Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel’. Each Act was preceded by thoughtfully curated theatrics executed to perfection, which made the performance all the more riveting. The band went into Act III with visuals of a woman, pierced with hooks, and then suspended from the ceilings of the ancient church. The image of the performer suspended as if she were on a crucifix and swinging throughout the performance of ‘Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer’ was the visual peak of In Absentia Dei for me (and many others for sure).

Pyrotechnics is nothing new in a BEHEMOTH show. However, the location combined with the use of fire and flames just made the whole performance more artistic and beastly at the same time. The images of flames surrounding a blood-soaked Nergal while the band played ‘O Father O Satan O Sun’ was just the perfect ending for the show.
BEHEMOTH kept the energy high throughout the show, which (I guess) is not an easy feat to achieve when playing without an audience. The band delivered an absolutely wholesome performance with great sound, theatrics, and visuals that were creative and stayed 100 percent true to the band’s music and beliefs. The show was a good reminder of how BEHEMOTH is truly one of the best live acts around in terms of putting on a great show by bringing together extreme metal music and artistic valor.

As much as I miss going for traditional shows and festivals, live streaming shows is something I could get used to, especially if bands can pack a punch as BEHEMOTH did with In Absentia Dei.

Coldplay – brytyjski zespół muzyczny, grający muzykę rockową, założony przez wokalistę Chrisa Martina i gitarzystę Jonny’ego Bucklanda w 1996 na University College London jako Pectoralz. Po dołączeniu do składu basisty Guya Berrymana grupa zmieniła swoją nazwę na Starfish, a w 1998 – na Coldplay. Przedtem, do składu zespołu dołączył perkusista i multiinstrumentalista Will Champion oraz menadżer Phil Harvey. Druga płyta, A Rush of Blood to the Head z 2002, zdobyła wiele wyróżnień muzycznych, w tym tytuł „Albumu roku” według magazynu „New Musical Express” oraz „Najlepszej płyty wszech czasów” według słuchaczy BBC Radio 2. W 2005 premierę wydali trzeci album pt. X&Y, który został najczęściej kupowanym krążkiem roku. Trzy lata później premierę miał czwarty krążek formacji, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, który zdobył Nagrodę Grammy podczas 51. ceremonii w kategorii „Najlepszy rockowy album” oraz nominację do statuetki w kategorii „Album roku”. W październiku 2011 ukazało się piąte wydawnictwo od Coldplay pt. Mylo Xyloto, które zajęło pierwsze miejsce na liście najchętniej kupowanych płyt w 34 krajach, a w Wielkiej Brytanii zostało najchętniej kupowanym albumem rockowym roku. W maju 2014 wydany został szósty album zespołu pt. Ghost Stories.

Coldplay zdobył mnóstwo nagród w swojej karierze, m.in. osiem statuetek Brit Awards (w tym trzy za wygraną w kategorii „Najlepszy brytyjski zespół”), pięć wyróżnień na ceremonii MTV Video Music Awards oraz siedem Nagród Grammy. Od początku działalności, grupa sprzedała ponad 55 milionów płyt oraz angażowała się w wiele akcji charytatywnych, takich jak Live 8, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, Sound Relief czy Sport Relief.

Chris Martin i Jonny Buckland poznali się we wrześniu 1996 podczas tygodnia zapoznawczego na University College London (UCL). Muzycy planowali założyć własny zespół muzyczny, czego efektem było utworzenie duetu o nazwie Pectoralz. Po rozpoczęciu współpracy do duetu dołączył basista Guy Berryman, który był jednym z ich dobrych znajomych z uczelni. W 1997 zespół zmienił nazwę i jako Starfish grał koncerty w lokalnych klubach. W tym czasie Martin zaproponował funkcję menadżera grupy wieloletniemu przyjacielowi – Philowi Harveyowi, studentowi Uniwersytetu Oksfordzkiego. Niedługo potem do składu zespołu dołączył perkusista Will Champion. Chociaż nigdy wcześniej nie uczył się grać na perkusji, tylko na fortepianie, gitarze, basie i flażolecie, szybko opanował grę na instrumencie. Zespół postanowił ostatecznie przybrać nazwę Coldplay, którą zaproponował muzykom Tim Crompton. W 1997 członkowie formacji współpracowali także ze studentem muzyki klasycznej, Timem Rice-Oxleyem, z którym grali swoje utwory na fortepianie. Po kilkutygodniowych spotkaniach Martin zaproponował mu stanowisko klawiszowca w grupie, jednak ten zrezygnował z powodu grania w swoim własnym zespole o nazwie Keane.

W 1998 ukazał się debiutancki, czteroutworowy minialbum Coldplay pt. Safety EP, który został wydany w 500 egzemplarzach. Większość kopii zespół rozesłał po firmach fonograficznych i po znajomych, a 50 sztuk udostępnił do sprzedaży. W grudniu tego samego roku, grupa podpisała kontrakt z niezależną wytwórnią Fierce Panda, która była odpowiedzialna za wydanie ich kolejnej EP-ki pt. Brothers & Sisters, nagranej w cztery dni w lutym 1999.

Po zdaniu egzaminów końcowych przez członków zespołu na początku 1999 Coldplay podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią Parlophone na wydanie ich pierwszych pięciu płyt. Niedługo po nawiązaniu współpracy muzycy udali się do studia nagraniowego, gdzie powstał materiał na ich trzeci mini-album pt. The Blue Room EP. W październiku zostało wydane 500 egzemplarzy płyty, a wydawnictwo promował singiel „Bigger Stronger”, który trafił na listę airplay BBC Radio 1.

Zespół planował nagrać swój debiutancki album studyjny w dwa tygodnie, jednak z powodu gościnnych występów podczas tras koncertowych (m.in. podczas Carling Tour) oraz innych koncertów, płyta powstała od września 1999 do kwietnia-maja 2000. Krążek nagrywany był głównie w Liverpool's Parr Street Studios, a także w Rockfield Studios, Matrix Studios i Wessex Sound Studios, a jego producentem został Ken Nelson. Miksem całości zajął się amerykański realizator dźwięku Michael Brauer.

W marcu 2000 ukazał się pierwszy singiel z nadchodzącego albumu – „Shiver”, który dotarł do 35. miejsca brytyjskiej listy przebojów. W czerwcu Coldplay wyruszył w swoją pierwszą trasę koncertową, którego częścią był występ podczas Glastonbury Festival, oraz wydał kolejny singiel – „Yellow”, który dotarł do czwartego miejsca brytyjskich list przebojów, stając się przełomowym utworem w karierze zespołu. 10 lipca odbyła się premiera pierwszego albumu grupy – Parachutes, jego wydawcą została wytwórnia Parlophone. Płyta zadebiutowała na pierwszym miejscu UK Albums Chart, a 7 listopada ukazała się w Ameryce Północnej, pod szyldem wytwórni Nettwerk. Trzecim singlem z płyty został utwór „Trouble”, który został wydany w zaledwie tysiącu egzemplarzy, przeznaczonym jedynie dla fanów oraz dziennikarzy.

We wrześniu 2000 album Parachutes otrzymał nominację do nagrody Mercury Music Prize. Po rosnącym zainteresowaniu muzyką zespołu Coldplay postanowił wyruszyć w amerykańską trasę koncertową US Club Tour, która rozpoczęła się w lutym 2001. W tym samym miesiącu grupa otrzymała dwie statuetki Brit Awards w kategoriach „Najlepszy brytyjski zespół” oraz „Najlepszy brytyjski album”. Płyta zdobyła pozytywne recenzje od krytyków muzycznych i została wyróżniona Nagrodą Grammy w kategorii „Najlepszy album alternatywny” podczas ceremonii w 2002 oraz certyfikatem podwójnej platynowej płyty w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Po sukcesie pierwszej płyty Coldplay powrócił do studia nagraniowego we wrześniu 2001, aby nagrać materiał na drugi album studyjny pt. A Rush of Blood to the Head, którego producentem ponownie został Ken Nelson. Zespół początkowo miał nagrywać w studiu w Londynie, jednak ostatecznie postanowił przenieść pracę do Liverpoolu, gdzie powstało kilka utworów z pierwszego krążka. Pierwszym utworem nagranym na nową płytę został numer „In My Place”, który został wybrany na główny singiel albumu. Podczas sesji, muzycy napisali ponad 20 nowych utworów, w tym utwór „In My Place” oraz „Animals”, który grali jeszcze podczas trasy koncertowej promującej płytę Parachutes. W czerwcu Coldplay rozpoczął trasę koncertową promującą nowy album – A Rush of Blood to the Head Tour, która trwała do września 2003. Zespół zagrał koncerty na pięciu kontynentach, wystąpił m.in. podczas festiwali w Glastonbury i Werchter. Występ w Hordern Pavilion w Sydney został nagrany oraz wydany w formie CD i DVD pt. Live 2003. W lutym Narodowa Akademia Sztuki i Techniki Rejestracji wyróżniła płytę A Rush of Blood to the Head tytułem „Najlepszego alternatywnego albumu 2003 roku”, natomiast utwór „Clocks” – mianem „Nagrania roku”. Oprócz tego, w tym samym roku Coldplay także otrzymał dwie statuetki podczas ceremonii Brit Awards (organizowanej w londyńskim Earls Court Exhibition Centre), wygrywając w kategoriach „Najlepszy brytyjski zespół” i „Najlepszy brytyjski album”, a 28 sierpnia wystąpił podczas gali MTV Video Music Awards w nowojorskim Radio City Music Hall, podczas której zaśpiewał utwór „The Scientist”. Klip do singla został wyróżniony trzema nagrodami: za „Najlepszy teledysk”, „Przełomowy teledysk” oraz „Najlepszą reżyserię”.

W grudniu, czytelnicy magazynu „Rolling Stone” wskazali Coldplay najlepszym artystą oraz zespołem roku. W tym samym miesiącu grupa wydała własną wersję utworu „2000 Miles” z repertuaru zespołu The Pretenders, nagraną podczas jednego z koncertu w Chicago. Piosenka była udostępniona do sprzedaży na oficjalnej stronie Coldplay, a cały zysk z kupna trafił na konto organizacji Future Forests i Stop Handgun Violence. Singiel został najczęściej kupowanym utworem w 2003 w Wielkiej Brytanii.

W 2004 zespół postanowił zrobić sobie krótką przerwę od koncertowania i skoncentrować się na nagrywaniu materiału na nową płytę, która ukazała się w czerwcu 2005. Album został najchętniej kupowanym krążkiem roku, osiągając wynik 8,3 miliona sprzedanych egzemplarzy. Płyta pojawiła się na listach najchętniej kupowanych albumów w 20 krajach, została także trzecim najszybciej sprzedającym się krążkiem w historii brytyjskiego notowania. Pierwszym singlem promującym wydawnictwo został utwór „Speed of Sound”, który w kwietniu zadebiutował w radiu oraz w internetowych sklepach, a w maju ukazał się w formie płyty. W tym samym roku wydane zostały także dwa pozostałe single z albumu, czyli „Fix You” i „Talk”.

Od czerwca 2005 do lipca 2006 Coldplay wystąpił podczas swojej trasy koncertowej zatytułowanej Twisted Logic Tour, grając m.in. podczas festiwali w Coachelli, Glastonbury i na Wyspie Wight. W lipcu 2005 zespół zagrał podczas koncertu Live 8 w Londynie, podczas którego gościnnie zaśpiewał z nim Richard Ashcroft. W sierpniu tego samego roku podczas ceremonii MTV Video Music Awards 2005 zaprezentowali nową wersję singla „Speed of Sound”, a we wrześniu nagrali nową wersję piosenki „How You See the World”, przeznaczoną na specjalny album charytatywny Help!: A Day in the Life organizacji War Child, walczącej o bezpieczeństwo dzieci i młodzieży z terenów dotkniętych konfliktami zbrojnymi. W kolejnym roku Coldplay otrzymał dwie statuetki (za „Najlepszy album” i „Najlepszy singiel”) podczas ceremonii wręczenia Nagród Brit (przyznawanych przez brytyjski przemysł fonograficzny) oraz wydał nowe single – „The Hardest Part”, „What If”. Ostatni, szósty („White Shadows”) miał swoją premierę w Meksyku w czerwcu 2007.

W październiku 2006 Coldplay rozpoczął pracę nad czwartym albumem studyjnym pt. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, którego producentem został Brian Eno. Na początku 2007 zespół wyruszył w trasę koncertową po Ameryce Łacińskiej, zagrał w Chile, Argentynie, Brazylii i Meksyku. Resztę roku grupa spędziła na nagrywaniu materiału na płytę. W wywiadach Martin opisał krążek jako nowy kierunek dla Coldplay: odejście od trzech poprzednich płyt, które opisał jako „trylogia”.

Pierwszym singlem z nowego albumu został utwór „Violet Hill”, który ukazał się w maju 2008. Początkowo piosenkę można było pobrać za darmo na stronie oficjalnej zespołu (w sumie utwór pobrano ok. 2 miliony razy), później singiel trafił do sprzedaży elektronicznej. Utwór dotarł m.in. do ósmego miejsca listy przebojów w Wielkiej Brytanii, Norwegii i Szwecji. Tytułowa piosenka z płyty, „Viva la Vida”, został drugim singlem promującym wydawnictwo i zapewnił zespołowi debiut na pierwszym miejscu amerykańskiej listy przebojów magazynu Billboard. Trzeci singiel, „Lost!”, został wydany pod koniec tego samego roku, a w jego nowej wersji gościnnie pojawił się Jay-Z. Sam album osiągnął największy sukces komercyjny w dorobku grupy, zyskując tytuł najczęściej kupowanej płyty w 2008 oraz trafiając (często w pierwszym tygodniu) na szczyt list sprzedaży w Argentynie, Australii, Austrii, Belgii, Danii, Finlandii, Francji, Grecji, Hiszpanii, Holandii, Irlandii, Kanadzie, Niemczech, Norwegii, Nowej Zelandii, Portugalii, Szwajcarii, Szwecji, we Włoszech oraz w Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie po trzech dniach od premiery płyta odnotowała wynik 302 tysięcy sprzedanych egzemplarzy, a krajowy nadawca BBC opisał ją jako „jedną z najszybciej sprzedających się w historii brytyjskiego przemysłu fonograficznego”. Pod koniec czerwca album pobił rekord najczęściej kupowanego albumu w historii.

W październiku tego samego roku Coldplay wygrał dwie statuetki przyznawane przez magazyn Q za „Najlepszy album” oraz „Najlepszy występ”. Miesiąc później zespół zdobył tytuł Artysty sprzedającego najwięcej płyt na świecie podczas ceremonii wręczenia nagród World Music Awards w Monte Carlo. Oprócz tego, formacja wygrała także dwie inne statuetki dla rockowego oraz brytyjskiego artysty sprzedającego najwięcej płyt oraz wydała minialbum pt. Prospekt's March EP. Na płycie znalazły się utwory z sesji nagraniowej oraz późnych edycji albumu Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Krążek promował singiel „Life in Technicolor II”.

W czerwcu 2008 Coldplay rozpoczął swoją nową trasę koncertową zatytułowaną Viva la Vida Tour darmowym koncertem w londyńskim Brixton Academy. Dwa dni później zespół wystąpił podczas koncertu otwartego, transmitowanego na żywo, przed siedzibą BBC Television Centre. W maju 2009 ukazał się album koncertowy LeftRightLeftRightLeft, zawierający zapis występów grupy podczas trasy. Płyta dostępna była także za darmo na oficjalnej stronie internetowej formacji. W październiku Coldplay otrzymał Nagrodę Amerykańskiego Stowarzyszenia Kompozytorów, Autorów i Wydawców (ASCAP) za singiel „Viva la Vida”, a w grudniu czytelnicy magazynu Rolling Stone okrzyknęli zespół mianem czwartego najlepszego artysty dekady. Po zakończeniu trasy Coldplay zapowiedział swoje kolejne tournée, zatytułowane Latin America Tour, które odbyło się w lutym i marcu 2010 na terenie Ameryki Łacińskiej.

W grudniu członkowie zespołu zostali posądzeni przez Joego Satrianiego o popełnienie przez nich plagiatu w utworze „Viva la Vida”, podczas nagrywania którego inspirować mieli się piosenką „If I Could Fly” z jego albumu Is There Love in Space? z 2004. Coldplay zaprzeczył oskarżeniom. Ostatecznie, rok później obie strony rozliczyły się ze sobą. W marcu tego samego roku grupa zagrała podczas koncertu charytatywnego Sound Relief, zorganizowanego w Sydney Cricket Ground na rzecz ofiar pożarów buszu w Wiktorii.

W 2009 Coldplay otrzymał nominacje do nagród brytyjskiego przemysłu fonograficznego w czterech kategoriach: „Brytyjski zespół”, „Brytyjski występ na żywo”, „Brytyjski singiel” („Viva la Vida”) i „Brytyjski album” (Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends). Oprócz tego, podczas 51. ceremonii wręczenia Nagrody Grammy formacja otrzymała trzy statuetki w kategoriach: „Piosenka roku” („Viva la Vida”), „Najlepszy rockowy album” (Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends) oraz „Najlepszy wokalnie występ duetu/grupy popowej” („Viva la Vida”).

W połowie 2011 Coldplay zakończył pracę nad nowym albumem. W wywiadzie dla BBC Radio 1 Martin i Champion przyznali, że na płycie znajdą się teksty o „miłości, uzależnieniu, nerwica natręctw, ucieczce i pracy dla kogoś, kogo nie lubisz”. W rozmowie zespół potwierdził także występy na festiwalach: Pinkpop, T in the Park, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza oraz podczas festiwalu w Werchter i Glastonbury. Na początku czerwca 2011 Coldplay opublikował pierwszy singiel z nowego albumu, którym został utwór „Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall”. We wrześniu ukazał się drugi utwór zapowiadający płytę „Paradise”, a podczas letnich festiwali zespół zaprezentował także pięć innych piosenek z krążka: „Charlie Brown”, „Hurts Like Heaven”, „Us Against the World”, „Princess of China” i „Major Minus”. Premiera albumu Mylo Xyloto odbyła się pod koniec października tego samego roku. Płyta trafiła na pierwsze miejsca list najchętniej kupowanych albumów w Australii, Belgii, Francji, Holandii, Irlandii, Kanadzie, Niemczech, Norwegii, Nowej Zelandii, Polsce, Portugalii, Szwajcarii, Szwecji, Wielkiej Brytanii i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Wydawnictwo sprzedało się w ponad 8 milionach egzemplarzy na całym świecie. Album został najchętniej kupowanym krążkiem rockowym roku w Wielkiej Brytanii, osiągnął wynik 908 tysięcy sprzedanych egzemplarzy. Drugi singiel z płyty, „Paradise”, został natomiast najczęściej kupowanym singlem rockowym, sprzedając się w ponad 410 tysiącach kopii. Teledysk do utworu otrzymał tytuł Najlepszego rockowego klipu podczas ceremonii wręczania MTV Video Music Awards.

19 października, pięć dni przed oficjalną premierą płyty, Coldplay wystąpił podczas specjalnego koncertu memorialnego ku czci Steve’a Jobsa, zorganizowanego przez Apple Inc. 26 października na madryckiej Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas zespół zagrał koncert transmitowany na żywo na kanale YouTube, reżyserem całego wydarzenia został Anton Corbijn. Pod koniec listopada grupa otrzymała nominacje do trzech Nagród Grammy, a w styczniu kolejnego roku – do dwóch statuetek Brit, spośród których jedną wygrała (po raz trzeci w kategorii „Najlepszy zespół brytyjski”).

9 września 2012 Coldplay wystąpił jako jeden z gości muzycznych podczas ceremonii zamknięcia Letnich Igrzysk Paraolimpijskich w Londynie. Oprócz tego, początkujące zespoły uczestniczące w Bandstand Marathon wykonały podczas wydarzenia ich przebój „Viva la Vida”. W listopadzie tego samego roku ukazał się film dokumentalny Coldplay Live 2012, który przedstawiał kulisy ostatniej trasy koncertowej.

21 listopada, po koncercie w Brisbane, będącego częścią trasy Mylo Xyloto Tour, Coldplay ogłosił, że zamierza zrobić sobie trzyletnią przerwę od koncertowania. Jak tłumaczył później zespół, nie chodziło im o brak występów, tylko o brak planów dotyczących koncertów w Brisbane w ciągu kolejnych trzech lat. Oprócz występów związanych z trasą koncertową, zespół pojawił się także podczas koncertów noworocznych zorganizowanych w Barclays Center. Trasa Mylo Xyloto Tour została okrzyknięta czwartą najbardziej dochodową trasą w 2012, przynosząc ponad 171 milionów dolarów zysków ze sprzedaży biletów.

W sierpniu 2013 Coldplay poinformował, że ich nowy utwór, „Atlas”, pojawi się na oficjalnej ścieżce dźwiękowej filmu Igrzyska śmierci: W pierścieniu ognia. Premiera filmu odbyła się we wrześniu tego samego roku. W grudniu ogłoszono, że nowa płyta zespołu zostanie wydana w Stanach Zjednoczonych przez wytwórnię Atlantic Records z powodu restrukturyzacji w Warner Music Group po zakupie przez nią wytwórni Parlophone.

W marcu 2014 Coldplay zagrał gościnnie podczas iTunes Festival, organizowanego w Austin, i zaprezentował wówczas piosenki zapowiadające nową płytę: „Always in My Head”, „Magic”, „Another's Arms” i „Midnight”. Premiera albumu Ghost Stories odbyła się 19 maja. Pierwszym oficjalnym singlem promującym wydawnictwo został utwór „Magic”, a drugim – „A Sky Full of Stars”, którego współproducentem został szwedzki DJ Avicii. 11 grudnia 2014 zespół wystąpił na rozdaniu nagród BBC Music Awards w Earls Court Exhibition Centre w Londynie.

W 2015 wyszła płyta A Head Full Of Dreams.

7 lutego 2016 zespół wystąpił razem z Beyoncé i Bruno Marsem podczas przerwy finału Super Bowl.

Rok później po raz drugi, zagrali w Warszawie, tego samego roku wyszła płyta Kaleidoscope EP, i piosenka "Something Just Like This" z zespołem The Chainsmokers.

W 2019 wyszedł album Everyday Life. W 2021 roku byli nominowani do nagrody Grammy w dwóch kategoriach: Najlepszy Album i za Najlepszą Okładkę.

7 maja wyszedł singiel „Higher Power”. 20 lipca oficjalnie potwierdzono o wydaniu nowego albumu Music Of The Spears, a 2 dni później wyszedł singiel promocyjny „Coloratura”. Drugim utworem promującym krążek został utwór „My Universe” nagrany z gościnnym udziałem zespołu BTS.

Piosenka „Kung Fu Fighting” znajdowała się przez długi czas na pierwszych miejscach amerykańskich i brytyjskich list przebojów w roku 1974. Popularność i sława tego utworu, który składał hołd filmom poświęconym wschodnim sztukom walki, zakryła resztę kariery muzycznej Carla Douglasa. Rezultatem tego było wypuszczenie dużej ilości coverów tej piosenki.

Ray Charles, właśc. Ray Charles Robinson (ur. 23 września 1930 w Albany, zm. 10 czerwca 2004 w Beverly Hills) – amerykański wokalista, muzyk i pianista, uważany za artystę, który ukształtował rhythm and blues. Charles wprowadził pełne uczuć brzmienie do muzyki country oraz popularnej, a o jego interpretacji „America the Beautiful” Ed Bradley z programu 60 Minutes powiedział: „to ostateczna wersja, amerykański hymn – klasyk, taki, jakim jest mężczyzna, który go wykonał”.

Frank Sinatra określił Charlesa mianem „jedynego prawdziwego geniusza w tym biznesie”. W 2004 roku magazyn muzyczny Rolling Stone umieścił muzyka na miejscu 10. listy 100 największych artystów wszech czasów oraz na miejscu 2. sporządzonej w 2008 roku listy 100 największych wykonawców wszech czasów.

Ray Charles Robinson urodził się 23 września 1930 w Albany, w stanie Georgia. Był synem Arethy Williams, pracownicy tartaku, i Baileya Robinsona, mechanika. Jego rodzice nigdy się nie pobrali. Rodzina przeprowadziła się do Greenville na Florydzie, gdy Ray był dzieckiem. Wtedy też Bailey odszedł od Arethy, by mogła na nowo założyć rodzinę i wychowywać dzieci. Gdy Charles miał pięć lat, widział, jak jego młodszy brat George utonął.

W wieku 5 lat Ray zaczął tracić wzrok, a mając siedem lat stał się całkiem ociemniały. Muzyk nigdy nie wiedział dokładnie co spowodowało jego problemy ze wzrokiem. Pewne źródła mówią, iż przyczyną mogła być jaskra. Charles uczęszczał do szkoły dla niewidomych Florida School for the Deaf and Blind w St. Augustine na Florydzie, gdzie nauczył się alfabetu Braille’a, a także komponowania muzyki i grania na różnych instrumentach, m.in. na klarnecie, a potem na fortepianie. W czasie nauki Charlesa w szkole zmarli jego rodzice.

Zanim Charles ukończył szkołę, zaczął grać w wielu zespołach, wykonujących różne gatunki muzyczne, w tym m.in. jazz. Ciemne okulary, które szybko stały się jego znakiem firmowym, artysta zaczął nosić w 1948 roku, jako członek zespołu McSon Trio (gdzie Gosady McGee był gitarzystą, a Milton Garred basistą).

W 1947 roku Charles przeprowadził się do Seattle i wkrótce zaczął nagrywać, początkowo w wytwórni Swingtime. Wtedy powstał pierwszy hit muzyka, „Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand”, z 1951 roku. Rok później Ray spotkał Ahmeta Ertegüna i podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią Atlantic. Kiedy muzyk zaistniał na rynku muzycznym, jego imię i nazwisko zostało skrócone do Ray Charles z Ray Charles Robinson, by uniknąć zbieżności z bokserem Sugarem Rayem Robinsonem.

Niemal natychmiast po nawiązaniu współpracy z wytwórnią Atlantic muzyk nagrał dwa duże hity: piosenki „It Should Have Been Me” oraz „Mess Around”, autorstwa Ertegüna, które zdominowały amerykańskie listy przebojów w 1953 roku. Międzynarodowy sukces Charlesowi przyniósł jednak utwór „I Got a Woman”, skomponowany przez Renalda Richarda, członka zespołu Raya. Piosenka uplasowała się na szczycie notowania Billboard R&B w 1955 roku. W tym samym zestawieniu aż do 1959 roku na miejscu 1. regularnie pojawiały się utwory muzyka, w tym m.in. „This Little Girl of Mine”, „Lonely Avenue”, „Mary Ann”, „Drown in My Own Tears” i „Night Time Is the Right Time”, wydane na kompilacyjnych albumach Hallelujah, I Love Her So, Yes Indeed! oraz The Genius Sings the Blues.

W tym samym okresie Charles rozpoczął współpracę z grupą młodych dziewczyn z Filadelfii, tworzących zespół The Cookies. Zaczęły one nagrywać z muzykiem w Nowym Jorku, stanowiąc wokal wspierający. Z czasem Ray zmienił nazwę ich grupy z Cookies na The Raelettes. Jednym z największych hitów w dorobku Charlesa jest piosenka „What’d I Say”, która poza tym, że zajęła 1. pozycję na liście Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop, jako pierwszy utwór w historii muzyka uplasowała się w zestawieniu z muzyką popularną. Przed odejściem Charlesa z wytwórni Atlantic do wytwórni ABC Paramount Records w 1959 roku, z którą podpisał bardziej lukratywny kontrakt, muzyk zdążył jeszcze nagrać album The Genius of Ray Charles. Jedne z najpopularniejszych piosenek Raya: „Georgia on My Mind”, „Hit the Road Jack” i „Unchain My Heart” pomogły mu odnieść sukces w muzyce popularnej, a album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music oraz jego sequel Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Vol. 2 wprowadziły country do gatunków muzyki mainstreamowej. To m.in. jego płyt słuchał młody Jimi Hendrix.

W 1965 roku Charles został aresztowany za posiadanie heroiny, od której uzależniony był przez niemal 20 lat. Muzyk został wtedy zatrzymany po raz trzeci, jednak za każdym razem przyczyna była ta sama – narkotyki. W 1966 roku spędził rok na warunkowym przedterminowym zwolnieniu. Z nałogu wyleczył się w specjalistycznej klinice w Los Angeles.

Pod koniec lat 60. oraz w latach 70. twórczość Raya składała się albo z hitów, albo z krytycznie ocenianych utworów. Jego wersja „Georgia on My Mind” została 24 kwietnia 1979 roku uznana za hymn stanu Georgia. Porównywalnie duży sukces osiągnęło unikatowe wykonanie Charlesa piosenki „America the Beautiful”. W listopadzie 1977 roku muzyk wystąpił w roli prowadzącego w popularnym programie telewizji NBC, Saturday Night Live.

Pod koniec lat 80. wzrosła popularność Charlesa wśród młodzieży. Przyczyniła się do tego obecność Raya w ówczesnej popkulturze. Wystąpił gościnnie w filmie The Blues Brothers (gra w tej komedii niewidomego właściciela sklepu z instrumentami, który wykonuje „Shake a Tail Feather”, aby zademonstrować ich jakość), a w 1985 roku jego piosenka „Night Time Is the Right Time” wykorzystana została w serialu telewizyjnym The Cosby Show. Muzyk pojawił się także gościnnie w kilku serialach telewizyjnych, w tym m.in. Pomoc domowa, a także programach rozrywkowych. Na początku lat 90. Charles wystąpił również w reklamie napoju Pepsi, w której spopularyzował frazę „You Got the Right One, Baby!”.

W 1985 roku był jednym z artystów, którzy nagrali charytatywną piosenkę „We Are the World”. W 1988 roku Ray wystąpił wraz z nowojorskim baletem wykonującym jego choreograficznie opracowane klasyczne utwory. Wydarzenie to okazało się takim sukcesem, iż powtórzono je rok później.

W 1989 roku Charles stworzył swoją wersję piosenki „Itoshi no Ellie” japońskiego zespołu Southern All Stars, którego angielski tytuł brzmiał „Ellie My Love”. Nagrany na potrzeby kampanii reklamowej jednego z największych japońskich producentów alkoholi, utwór uplasował się na pozycji 3. notowania Oricon. Singel rozszedł się w Japonii w ilości 400,000 egzemplarzy i stał się tym samym najlepiej sprzedającym się singlem roku zagranicznego artysty w tym kraju.

Charles wystąpił podczas dwóch prezydenckich inauguracji w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W 1985 roku wystąpił w trakcie drugiej inauguracji Ronalda Reagana, a w 1993 roku wystąpił podczas pierwszej inauguracji Billa Clintona.

Pod koniec lat 80. i na początku lat 90. Charles wystąpił kilka razy w programie telewizyjnym The Super Dave Osbourne Show. W tym samym czasie pojawiał się gościnnie w wielu piosenkach i na albumach innych artystów, w tym m.in. w hicie „I’ll Be Good To You”, swojego przyjaciela Quincy’ego Jonesa.

Po śmierci Jima Hensona w 1990 roku, Charles wystąpił w godzinnym programie The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson w telewizji CBS, będącym hołdem dla zmarłego twórcy słynnego Muppet Show. Muzyk wygłosił krótką mowę oraz wraz z obsadą Muppet Show wykonał piosenkę „It’s Not Easy Being Green”.

W 2000 roku Charles pojawił się gościnnie w serialu animowanym Śladem Blue, wcielając się w fikcyjną postać G-Clefa. W trakcie nagrań odcinka oraz po jego zakończeniu muzyk stworzył wraz z Traci Paige Johnson i Steve’em Burnsem, członkami obsady serialu, piosenkę „There It Is”. Po jej nagraniu Ray powiedział: „To sprawiło mi najwięcej radości, odkąd spotkałem Ronalda Reagana w 1984 roku.”.

W 2002 roku muzyk wystąpił podczas festiwalu Blues Passions Cognac we Francji.

W 2002 roku Ray był jednym z artystów, którzy wystąpili w ramach pokojowego koncertu w Rzymie. Koncert odbył się wewnątrz antycznego Koloseum i był pierwszym tego typu wydarzeniem w tym miejscu od roku 404. Występ zorganizowany został przez międzynarodową organizację Global Forum oraz fundację Listen Up Foundation, założoną przez Quincy’ego Jonesa.

W czerwcu 2003 roku Charles wykonał z fanem swej twórczości Vanem Morrisonem piosenkę „Crazy Love”. Zapis tego występu wydany został na kompilacyjnym albumie Morrisona z 2007 roku, The Best of Van Morrison Volume 3. W tym samym roku muzyk wykonał „Georgia on My Mind” i „America the Beautiful” podczas bankietu w Waszyngtonie, co było jego ostatnim publicznym występem. Po raz ostatni Ray publicznie pojawił się 30 kwietnia 2004 roku, kiedy jego studio nagraniowe zostało uznane za miejsce historyczne miasta Los Angeles.

Ray Charles zmarł 10 czerwca 2004 roku na raka wątrobowokomórkowego w swoim domu w Beverly Hills w Kalifornii. Muzyk został pochowany na cmentarzu Inglewood Park Cemetery w Inglewood w Kalifornii.

Ostatni album muzyka, Genius Loves Company, wydany został dwa miesiące po śmierci Raya. Składa się z utworów nagranych przez Charlesa z różnymi artystami: B.B. Kingiem, Vanem Morrisonem, Williem Nelsonem, Jamesem Taylorem, Gladys Knight, Michaelem McDonaldem, Natalie Cole, Eltonem Johnem, Bonnie Raitt, Dianą Krall, Norah Jones i Johnnym Mathisem. Płyta zdobyła osiem nagród Grammy, a duety z Eltonem Johnem i B.B. Kingiem cieszyły się dużym uznaniem. Na albumie znalazła się piosenka „Over the Rainbow” Harolda Arlena w interpretacji Charlesa, która została wykonana podczas występu na cześć zmarłego muzyka.

Po śmierci Charlesa ukazały się jeszcze dwa inne albumy z jego muzyką. Wydana w 2005 roku płyta Genius & Friends składa się z piosenek nagranych w duetach z artystami, których Charles wybrał osobiście w latach 1997-2004. Z kolei wydany rok później album Ray Sings, Basie Swings zawiera utwory powstałe w wyniku połączenia zapisu głosu muzyka z koncertu w 1974 roku z muzyką Counta Basiego. Producentem tej płyty był perkusista Gregg Field, który grał razem z Charlesem oraz Basiem.

Mimo swego poparcia dla Martina Luthera Kinga Jr. w latach 60. oraz ruchowi praw obywatelskich, Charles wzbudził wiele kontrowersji, kiedy wybrał się w trasę koncertową po RPA w 1981 roku, która była ówcześnie bojkotowana na arenie międzynarodowej z powodu obowiązującego tam apartheidu.

Susaye Greene, była członkini zespołu Charlesa, The Raelettes, a także grup The Supremes i Wonderlove, obecnie artystka solowa, była jedyną piosenkarką z The Raelettes, która zaśpiewała na pogrzebie muzyka. Do tej sytuacji odniosła się nawet telewizja BBC, komentując: „Uwadze nie umknął fakt, że Susaye była jedyną członkinią The Raelettes, która zaśpiewała na pogrzebie Raya.”.

Charles był żonaty dwukrotnie, z różnymi kobietami miał dwanaścioro dzieci. Jego pierwszą żoną była Eileen Williams. Ich małżeństwo nie trwało jednak długo, bo zawarte zostało 31 lipca 1951 roku, a zakończyło się w 1952 roku. Drugą żoną muzyka była Della Beatrice Howard Robinson, z którą miał trzech synów. Małżeństwo z Dellą trwało znacznie dłużej, bo od 5 kwietnia 1955 roku do 1977 roku. Wieloletnią przyjaciółką i partnerką Raya aż do chwili jego śmierci była Norma Pinella.

Członkowie grupy, wszyscy pochodzący z miasta Englewood w stanie New Jersey, znani są pod pseudonimami: Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank i Master Gee. Grupę stworzyła producentka muzyczna i piosenkarka Sylvia Robinson, która również wraz z mężem-potentatem muzycznym Joe Robinsonem, pod koniec lat 70. założyła Sugar Hill Records.

Nazywani przez laików pionierami hip-hopu, zapoczątkowali rejestrowanie nagrań tego typu muzyki poprzez wypuszczenie singla pt. „Rapper’s Delight”, który to rozszedł się na całym świecie w ilości ponad 8 mln egzemplarzy, zdobywając tym samym miano multiplatyny i hitu radiowego roku 1979.

Poinformowana o bardzo dużej ilości domowych imprez utrzymanych w klimacie hip-hop w całym Nowym Jorku, producentka i właścicielka niezależnej wytwórni płytowej, Sylvia Robinson, pod koniec lat 70. utworzyła grupę muzyczną składającą się z trzech miejscowych wokalistów-raperów. Byli nimi: Guy O’Brien (Master Gee), Michael Wright (Wonder Mike) i Henry Jackson (Big Bank Hank). Współpracowali oni z trzema muzykami sesyjnymi, w tym z przyszłym basistą grupy Living Colour, Dougiem Wimbish’em, gitarzystą Skipem McDonald’em a.k.a. Little Axe i perkusistą Keithem LeBlanc.

„Rapper’s Delight” wszedł na listę Hot Black Singles US R&B, gdzie dotarł do czwartej pozycji. Na liście Hot 100 US Pop Chart osiągnął 36. miejsce. Wielu twierdzi, że „Rapper’s Delight” jest pierwszym hip-hopowym singlem w historii, inni natomiast mówią, że poprzedzał go utwór Fatback Band pt. „King Tim III (Personality Jock)”, grupy, która w tamtych czasach klasyfikowana była do gatunku funk. Utwór bazuje na klasycznym loopie basowym z przeboju zespołu Positive Force, pochodzącego z tej samej wytwórni płytowej, co Sugarhill Gang, Sugar Hill Records. Utwór ten natomiast był niczym innym, jak przeróbką „Good Times” grupy Chic. Stał się światowym hitem, stając się przy okazji punktem odniesień tekstowych dla mnóstwa następnych rapowych kawałków. Przez długi czas trio z Endelwood cieszyło się kiepską reputacją w pewnym kręgu społecznym: fakt, że w gruncie rzeczy byli amatorami wyszukanymi przez Sugar Hill Records, denerwował innych artystów tworzących wówczas ten gatunek. Wersy Big Bank Hanks’a w rzeczywistości zostały napisane przez Grandmaster Caz’a, który to nigdy nie otrzymał tantiem za swój wkład. Wreszcie Nile Rodgers z Chic wniósł pozew o naruszenie utworem „Rapper’s Delight” praw autorskich. Sprawa załatwiona została poza sądem, przyznając powodowi prawo do wysokich tantiem.

Sugarhill Gang nigdy nie zdobył szczytu list przebojów, mimo iż w późniejszym czasie wypuścili takie hity, jak „Apache”, „Eight Wonder” (wykonany w programie muzycznym Soul Train w roku 1981), „Rapper’s Reprise (Jam Jam)” i „Showdown” (wraz z Furious Five). W 1999 roku nagrali hip-hopowy album dla dzieci zatytułowany „Jump On It”.

W roku 2008, wraz z Kurtisem Blow, Grandmaster Melle Mel, DJ Grand Wizard Theodore i Airforce Crew, zespół odwiedził Europę, w tym również Polskę, w ramach trasy koncertowej Hip-Hop Anniversary Tour.
