U2 have spent the vast majority of their career as the biggest rock & roll band in the world, a title that captures not only their popularity but their importance. Alone among all the groups to emerge from the post-punk era, U2 channeled their yen for moody, experimental aural textures into clearly defined rock anthems and ballads -- the kind of songs that fill arenas yet still seem personal. Much of that sense of intimacy can be attributed to Bono, a lead singer who gravitates toward grand gestures yet remains grounded by his belief in humanity and the revolutionary power of rock & roll. This sense of righteousness has never abandoned U2, not even after the group sold millions of albums all over the globe, but it burned brightest on their earliest records such as 1983's galvanizing War, when the cavernous guitar of the Edge still seemed flinty and the rhythm section of Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton conveyed the grit of the group's punk beginnings.

Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the '70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense. That 1973 album distilled the wild psychedelia of their early years -- that brief, heady period when they were fronted by Syd Barrett -- into a slow, sculpted, widescreen epic masterminded by Roger Waters, the bassist who was the band's de facto leader in the '70s. Waters fueled the band's golden years, conceiving such epics as Wish You Were Here and The Wall, but the band survived his departure in the '80s, with guitarist David Gilmour stepping to the forefront on A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. Throughout the years, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright appeared in some capacity, and the band's sonic signature was always evident: a wide, expansive sound that was instantly recognizable as their own, yet was adopted by all manner of bands, from guitar-worshiping metalheads to freaky, hippie, ambient electronic duos. Unlike almost any of their peers, Pink Floyd played to both sides of the aisle: they were rooted in the blues but their heart belonged to the future, a dichotomy that made them a quintessentially modern 20th century band.

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense, interlocking waves of sounds and effects. Stewart Copeland could play polyrhythms effortlessly. And Sting, with his high, keening voice, was capable of constructing infectiously catchy pop songs. While they weren't punk, the Police certainly demonstrated that the punk spirit could have a future in pop music. As their career progressed, the Police grew considerably more adventurous, experimenting with jazz and various world musics. All the while, the band's tight delivery and mastery of the pop single kept their audience increasing, and by 1983, they were the most popular rock & roll band in the world. Though they were at the height of their fame, internal tensions caused the band to splinter apart in 1984, with Sting picking up the majority of the band's audience to become an international superstar.

Sir Elton Hercules John (ur. 25 marca 1947 w Londynie w dzielnicy Pinner) – brytyjski piosenkarz, kompozytor, pianista i okazjonalnie aktor. Aktywista społeczny, założyciel Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Od 1967 współpracuje z tekściarzem Bernie Taupinem, z którym stworzył ponad 30 albumów studyjnych. Nakład ze sprzedaży jego wydawnictw muzycznych przekroczył ponad 300 mln egzemplarzy, co czyni go jednym z najbardziej uhonorowanych artystów wszech czasów. Jego singel „Something About the Way You Look Tonight”/„Candle in the Wind 1997” został sprzedany w nakładzie ponad 33 mln kopii na całym świecie oraz stał się najlepiej sprzedającym się singlem wszech czasów w brytyjskim Singles Chart i w amerykańskim Bilboard Hot 100.

Laureat sześciu nagród Grammy, czterech Brit Awards, dwóch Oscarów, Złotego Globu i Tony Award. Został wprowadzony do Songwriters Hall of Fame i Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Urodził się w Pinner na przedmieściach Londynu, w domu komunalnym przy Hill Road 55, w którym mieszkała jego babka ze strony mamy. Jest synem Sheili z domu Harris i Stanleya Dwightów, którzy pobrali się w styczniu 1945. Jego matka rozwoziła mleko, a ojciec był żołnierzem Royal Air Force, ponadto amatorsko grał na trąbce, a swoją przyszłą żonę poznał w trakcie koncertu w North Harrow. Po rozwodzie Sheila związała się z Fredem Fairebrotherem.

Jako dziecko wykazywał słuch muzyczny, dlatego też rozpoczął naukę gry na fortepianie, na którym z czasem grał podczas rodzinnych uroczystości. W wieku siedmiu lat zaczął pobierać profesjonalne lekcje gry. W 1958 zaczął uczyć się w County Grammar School w Pinner oraz wygrał stypendium dla juniorów do Royal Academy of Music, dzięki czemu przez następne pięć lat uczęszczał tam na sobotnie lekcje, na których grywał m.in. utwory Chopina, Mozarta, Beethovena i Bacha oraz śpiewał w akademickim chórze.

W wieku 15 lat, dzięki pomocy ojczyma, został weekendowym pianistą pobliskiego pubu Northwood Hills, gdzie grał utwory country z repertuaru Jima Reevesa, pubowe szlagiery (np. „Roll Out the Barrel”) oraz przeboje Elvisa Presleya, Johnnie’ego Raya i Ala Johnsona. Przez kilka miesięcy grał też z zespołem The Corvettes w miejscowych klubach młodzieżowych. W wieku 17 lat opuścił szkołę, by w pełni skupić się na karierze muzycznej.

W 1964 poznał wokalistę Longa Johna Baldry’ego i saksofonistę Eltona Deana, z którymi stworzył zespół Bluesology, w którym grał na pianinie i organach. Wspólnie wydali dwa single – „Come Back Baby” i „Mr Frantic”, oraz współpracowali jako muzycy koncertowi z wykonawcami, takimi jak Patti LaBelle, Major Lance, Fontella Bass czy Lee Dorsey. Znużony graniem w zespole, odpowiedział na ogłoszenie prasowe wytwórni Liberty, szukającej nowych talentów, i nagrał kilka piosenek, jednak nie zainteresował nimi przedstawicieli wytwórni. Po przesłuchaniu otrzymał od Raya Williamsa, producenta pracującego w wytwórni, plik tekstów Berniego Taupina, z którym podjął współpracę. Zaczęli wspólnie pisać piosenki z myślą o sprzedaniu ich innym wykonawcom.

W grudniu 1967 ostatecznie odszedł z Bluesology, by skupić się na solowej twórczości, którą rozwijał jako podopieczny wytwórni Dick James Music (DJM). W marcu 1968 wydał debiutancki singiel „I’ve Been Loving You”, który sygnował pseudonimem Elton John, inspirowanym Eltonem Deanem i Longiem Johnie’em Baldry’em z Bluesology. W tym czasie dorabiał, pracując jako muzyk sesyjny; nagrywał chórki dla Toma Jonesa oraz współtworzył nagrania dla The Scaffold, The Barron Knights czy Tony’ego Kinga, a także nagrywał covery przebojów umieszczane na składankach wydawanych przez wytwórnię Marble Arch i dystrybuowanych w supermarketach.

W styczniu 1969 wydał singiel „Lady Samantha”, który grany był w rozgłośniach radiowych, a jego cover nagrał na swoją płytę amerykański zespół Three Dog Night. Ponadto wraz z Bernie’em Tuplinem napisał utwór „I Can’t Go on Living without You”, jedną z propozycji nagranych przez Lulu na potrzeby programu A Song for Europe, wyłaniającego propozycję reprezentującą Wielką Brytanię w 14. Konkursie Piosenki Eurowizji. 6 czerwca 1969 wydał pod szyldem wytwórni DJM pierwszy, solowy album studyjny pt. Few bands embodied the fearless creativity and attitude of 1970s rock like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal and the quaintness of vaudevillian music hall in equal measure, the British quartet colored their complex arrangements with camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound layered with guitars and overdubbed vocals. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with post-Led Zeppelin hard rock bands. But balancing this seriousness, vocalist Freddie Mercury brought an extravagant sense of fun to Queen, pushing them toward kitschy humor and pseudo-classical arrangements as epitomized in their best-known song, "Bohemian Rhapsody."
