Eight months prior to their triumphant worldwide debut at Woodstock, Santana played a 4-night set at the Fillmore West on December 19-22, 1968. The resulting 2-disc recording from this fertile developmental period ably demonstrates the remarkably creative path Carlos Santana took to inevitable fame. Utilizing a line-up that included Gregg Rolie, vocals and keyboards, David Brown, bass, Doc Livingston, drums and Marcus Malone, congas, the band's sound was a tasty gumbo of rhythm and passion.

As evidenced in their set list, Santana's influences at this time included master African percussionist Babatunde Olatunki ("Jingo"), jazz musician Chico Hamilton ("Conquistadores Rides Again") and Albert King ("As The Years Go Passing By"). Grooves were the name of the game, and the chemistry between Rolie and Carlos Santana was at the core of these performances, whether its the give-and-take improvising going on between the two in "Fried Neckbone" or the slow, after-hours jazz vibe Rolie lays down at the beginning of "Treat," which ends up morphing into a Latin-flavored rock number. A fascinating live document showcasing the embryonic stages of Santana's trademark improvisational talents.

...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

Aż przyszła jesień 1989 roku i singiel „Road to Hell” (dokładnie „Road to Hell part II”) grane po wszystkich radiach, a właściwie po jednym, Trójce (bo innego podobnego właściwie nie było), za to często. Nie powiem, spodobało mi się. Nie powiem, spodobała mi się i cała płyta, której posłuchałem w Trójce pewnego listopadowego popołudnia. Innym też się spodobało, bo był to największy przebój Rei, a duża płyta w samej Wielkiej Brytanii sprzedawała się w jakichś nieprawdopodobnych ilościach. A to w sytuacji, kiedy Rea nagrał swój najbardziej niekomercyjny krążek z dotychczasowych. Zawsze starał się grać pop-rocka „dla ludzi”, zawsze na jego albumach można było znaleźć sporo utworów, które aż rwały się na single, jednak tym razem było inaczej. Mam wrażenie, że po sukcesie „Dancing with Strangers”, który ugruntował pozycję artysty na rynku muzycznym, doszedł do wniosku, że nic już nie musi. Dlatego nagrał taką płytę jaka chciał, nie oglądając się na cokolwiek – dość spokojną, nieco sentymentalną, niezbyt przebojową, dużo tu bluesa, a ewidentnego singla dałoby się wykroić tylko jednego – "That's What They Always Say". No dwa – "I Just Wanna Be with You". Nawet jedna z tych piosenek singlem była, ale wiele nie zwojowała na listach. Reszta utworów – ośmiominutowy „Looking for A Rainbow”, bujające „Daytona” i „Texas”, piękny „Your Warm And Tender Love” – świetne utwory, ale specjalnie nie nadawały się do tego, żeby grać je w radiu. Taki oto pasztet przyszykował Rea swoim szefom z Atco. Ale trzeba przyznać, że był to pasztet wyjątkowo starannie przyrządzony – najlepiej zrealizowany album artysty do tej pory. Brzmiący nieco konserwatywnie, a nawet staroświecko, zupełnie nie jak z lat osiemdziesiątych, nawet smyczkami wzbogacony („Tell Me There’s A Heaven”). Takie coś, co wydawałoby się, zupełnie nie nadaje się do ścigania po listach przebojów, bo jest zbyt osobiste i kameralne. Do tego nie jest to płyta na jeden raz. Po razie, to może się nam najwyżej spodobać, ale zabierze nam sporo czasu, żeby móc powiedzieć o niej coś konkretniejszego. I to nawet nie do końca zależy od tego ile razy jej słuchaliśmy, tylko bardziej od tego, ile czasu upłynęło, odkąd słuchaliśmy jej po raz pierwszy. No to jak to się stało, że taka mało komercyjna płyta stała się największym sukcesem komercyjnym Chrisa Rei? Nie mam zielonego pojęcia. Odpowiedź: „Bo była taka dobra” wcale nie jest wyczerpująca, bo czy to jedna znakomita płyta zginęła w pomroce rockowych dziejów zupełnie niedoceniona? Pewne za to jest jedno – „Road to Hell” oprócz tego, że sprzedawała się rewelacyjnie, to jeszcze pozwoliła przeskoczyć Rei o muzyczny poziom wyżej – z sprawnego pop-rockowego wykonawcy, stał się prawdziwym artystą przez duże „A”.

Wydaje mi się, że „Road to Hell” możemy nazwać arcydziełem, bo i muzyka, i produkcja bardzo dobrze zniosły próbę czasu – jak były nieco staroświeckie dwadzieścia pięć lat temu, tak dalej są nieco staroświeckie, takie pozaczasowe, albo nawet ponadczasowe. Myślę, że sprawił to ten jakże wszechobecny w tej muzyce pierwiastek bluesowy, bo blues jest właśnie taki uniwersalny, zawsze będzie brzmiał tak samo bezpretensjonalnie teraz, kilka dekad temu i za kilka dziesięcioleci też. Co prawda Ćwiara Minęła, ale tej muzyki słucha się tak samo dobrze, jak dwadzieścia pięć lat temu.
