Stone Temple Pilots (STP) – amerykański zespół grunge’owy założony w 1990 przez Scotta Weilanda i Roberta DeLeo działający do roku 2003. W 2008 roku ogłoszono reaktywację. Zespół ten zajął 40. miejsce na oficjalnej liście najlepszych zespołów rockowych, sporządzonej przez stację telewizyjną VH1.

W 2013 roku Scott Weiland został zwolniony z zespołu. Nowym wokalistą formacji został znany z występów w zespole Linkin Park – Chester Bennington.

W 2015 roku Bennington odszedł z zespołu, motywując swą decyzję koncentracją na występach wraz z Linkin Park.

Moon Duo to psychodeliczny zespół rockowy z San Francisco w Kalifornii, założony w 2009 roku przez gitarzystę Wooden Shjips Ripleya Johnsona i Sanae Yamadę.

Ich debiutancki album Mazes ukazał się nakładem Sacred Bones Records w 2011 roku. Styl zespołu inspirowany jest psychodelicznym rockiem, łączącym powtarzalne rytmy i nasycone gitary. Ich wpływy obejmują Alana Vegę z Suicide , Spacemen 3 i Silver Apples . Siódmy pełnometrażowy album zespołu, Stars Are the Light, ukazał się 27 września 2019 roku.

Ich najnowszy album, Stars Are the Light, zebrał pochlebne recenzje. Stereogum nazwał go albumem tygodnia 19 września 2019 r., mówiąc: „Na swoim najnowszym albumie Moon Duo myśleli o tańcu i jako taki Stars Are the Light zawiera zaskakujące probierze, a Johnson i Yamada spoglądają wstecz na funk i lat 70. disco.” Metacritic dał albumowi wynik 77 na 100.

'abacab' to w zasadzie nie jest płyta kontrowersyjna. Fani „starego” Genesis mają o niej raczej ugruntowaną opinię – ich zdaniem „abacab” jest najgorszą, najbardziej koniunkturalną i najmniej udaną kompozycyjnie płytą zespołu w całej karierze formacji. Wydaje się, że przegrywa nawet z tak lichym albumem jak „…calling all stations…” a i do „From Genesis To Revelation” wielu ma większy sentyment niż do płyty, w której zespół zatopił się niezgrabnie w estetyce lat osiemdziesiątych.

Czy fani mają racje? I tak i nie. Czy „abacab” jest albumem kiepskim? Nie. Nie jest. Nie ulega jednak wątpliwości, że mógł być płytą o niebo lepszą. Nie jest to zresztą próżne wróżenie z fusów a fakt, oparty na jakości utworów, które na longplay nie weszły. patrząc z perspektywy fana dotychczasowych dokonań formacji zespół popełnił też kilka innych błędów. Od czasu opublikowania „…and then there were three…” Genesis dopadł trudny do zrozumienia kompleks nowoczesności, obawa o wpływ punku na kształt sceny muzycznej oraz nieodparta chęć pozostawania „modnym”. Jest to tym bardziej niezrozumiałe, że poprzednie albumy, w tym przepiękny „Duke” świadczyły o tym, że zespół znalazł doskonałe wyjście, złoty środek, pozwalający łączyć kierunek artystyczny wytyczony na albumach z Peterem Gabrielem z bardziej przystępnym i przebojowym brzmieniem, dobrze wpasowującym się w generalne tendencje na rynku. Zespołowi było jednak mało.

Tony Banks zrezygnował więc z melotronu i organów Hammonda na rzecz okropnego brzmienia polifonicznego syntezatora Prophet 10. Częściej i z większą zawziętością Genesis korzystał też z automatu perkusyjnego a wszystko to, o ironio, w celu uzyskania bardziej „naturalnego” i „rzeczywistego” brzmienia. Tak w każdym razie twierdzą muzycy bo w praktyce właśnie te zmiany, a w szczególności decyzje Banksa, zadecydowały o tym, że dla wielu fanów Genesis album „abacab” stał się płytą absolutnie niestrawną. Trudno też w jakikolwiek logiczny sposób wytłumaczyć włączenia na płytę absolutnie okropnego potworka w postaci „Who Dunnit”, którego jak jeden mąż muzycy zespołu bronią z uporem godnym lepszej sprawy. Daje to jednak wrażenie, jakby po prostu zmuszeni byli bronić swoich własnych złych wyborów, których konsekwencji dla zespołu byli jak najbardziej świadomi (wyraz temu nie jeden raz dali fani w trakcie koncertów). Co jeszcze bardziej zakrawa na kpinę (albo absolutne niezrozumienie stylu muzycznego) utwór ten określają, jako odpowiedź zespołu na wspomniany już punk. Jak żyję, nie spotkałem ani jednego punkowca, który miałby cokolwiek miłego do powiedzenia o „Who Dunnit”.

Na „abacab” trafiły jeszcze inne, godne zapomnienia kompozycje, w tym „Keep It Dark” czy „Like It Or Not”. Nie do końca trafnym pomysłem okazało się również wykorzystanie w dobrym skądinąd „No Reply At All” sekcji dętej towarzyszącej amerykańskiej formacji Earth, Wind and Fire. Był to ruch odrobinę koniunkturalny i pokazujący, że zespół wcale nie był tak obojętnie odporny na sukces „Face Value” – na którym również udzielali się ci sami muzycy – za jaki chciałby uchodzić w oczach fanów.

W ogólnym brzmieniu albumu wyraźnie odbija się również rosnąca dominacja nurtu New Wave, ale wpływy tak punku jak i jego spadkobierców z nowej fali przyjmowane były przez Genesis w sposób zupełnie przypadkowy i nielogiczny. Ewidentnie widać, że Genesis chcieli być nowocześni, ale zupełnie nie wiedzieli w jaki sposób to osiągnąć. Co nie oznacza oczywiście, że „abacab” należy omijać szerokim łukiem. Płyta wymaga jednak czasu od słuchacza i na pewno nie należy do albumów które od samego początku potrafią zagnieździć się w mózgu. Winnymi tego stanu rzeczy uznać trzeba samych muzyków, którzy dysponując olbrzymią wręcz mocą pomysłów nie potrafili odpowiednio uwypuklić ich kompozycyjnie, przykrywając grubą warstwą pseudo elektrycznego jazgotu. Szczerze mówiąc siadając do recenzji, opierając się na wspomnieniach związanych z albumem miałem zamiar wydać bardzo niepochlebny werdykt. Gdy jednak przesłuchałem płytę ponownie, ta przez trzy dni nie przestawała mi towarzyszyć. Zapętliłem w zasadzie „abacab” doceniając coraz bardziej tak doskonałe kompozycje jak „Dodo/Lurker” – progresywny, innowacyjny i ciekawy melodycznie progresywny diament (chociaż dobrze się stało, że tryptyk składający się z Dodo/Lurker/Submarine/Naminamu skrócono na potrzeby albumu do dwóch pierwszych części) czy poruszający „Man On The Corner” oraz „Me And Sarah Jane”. Ponadto bez wątpienia warto zainteresować się tytułowym „abacab” czy popsutym odrobinę przez dęciaki „No Reply At All”.

Jasne, pod koniec płyty następuje wyraźny spadek formy wraz z wspomnianym tu „Like It Or Not” oraz przyzwoitym ale łatwym do zapomnienia „Another Record”. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że Genesis na „abacab” to formacja pełna werwy, energii i chęci do eksperymentowania. Nie zawsze jednak energia ta spożytkowana została we właściwy sposób. Podjęto też kilka wątpliwych decyzji, tylko dlatego, że irracjonalnie bano się „brzmienia starego Genesis”. Z tego powodu zespół zrezygnował chociażby z bardzo dobrego „You Might Recall”, który zresztą wcale nie brzmi, jak „stary Genesis”.

Podsumowując, bardzo łatwo ignorować „abacab” bądź ciskać gromy na formację, która po kilku naprawdę ciekawych progresywno-aor’owskich albumach postanowiła zanurzyć się w latach osiemdziesiątych. Bez wątpienia nie musiała tego robić, a jeżeli już, to mogła zrobić to po prostu lepiej. A jednak „abacab” to nadal kawał dobrej płyty, chociaż słabszej od poprzednich, którą postrzegać należy bardziej w kategoriach zmarnowanego potencjału niż kompletnego dna kompozycyjnego. Szczerze mówiąc nazwałbym zresztą „abacab” ostatnią prawdziwie i pierwotnie „progresywną” płytą w katalogu formacji. Co by bowiem nie mówić, zespół wyraźnie poszukiwał nowych dróg rozwoju, nowych rozwiązań stylistycznych i form ekspresji. Czyli tego, co decyduje o progresywności i odróżnia prog rock od miałkiego popu.

W przypadku grupy Genesis początek lat 80. stał się niezłą terapią szokową, jaką zespół zafundował swoim fanom. Wydany w 1981 roku album „Abacab” otworzył nowy rozdział w historii zespołu. Już pierwsze sygnały zmian stylistycznych były widoczne na albumie „Duke”, ale tutaj mamy do czynienia z ich zdecydowanym rozwinięciem. Chodzi tu głównie o popowe naleciałości oraz podążanie za ówczesną brzmieniową modą. Daje się to zauważyć w wielu fragmentach tejże płyty. Kolejnymi zmianami jest wykorzystanie własnego studia nagraniowego The Farm oraz skorzystanie z usług nowego producenta (Hugh Padgham), który diametralnie zmienił podejście do nagrywania, zwłaszcza partii perkusyjnych.

Już otwierający płytę tytułowy utwór przenosi nas właściwie na parkiet dyskoteki. Klawisze Tony’ego Banksa w pierwszych taktach utworu brzmią typowo jak na syntetycznie syntezatorową kompozycję dyskotekową z tamtego okresu. Gdy muzycy pracowali nad tym utworem, stworzyli trzy różne fragmenty, które określili pierwszymi trzema literami alfabetu. Zestawienie ich w odpowiedniej kombinacji dało tytuł utworu (no, prawie że dało). W kolejnym nagraniu, „No Reply At All”, pojawia się sekcja dęta grupy Earth, Wind & Fire, z której usług Phil Collins korzystał na swym pierwszym, wydanym pół roku wcześniej, solowym albumie („Face Value”). Ta sama sekcja dęta pojawi się później w utworze „Keep It Dark” oraz w niewydanym na tejże płycie nagraniu „Paperlate” (ukazało się ono później na EP-ce „3x3” oraz na ogólnoświatowym wydaniu albumu „Three Sides Live” z 1982 roku). Popowy styl kontynuuje także przebojowy numer „Me And Sarah Jane”, chociaż ma on trochę nieco więcej wdzięku, głównie za sprawą ciekawej partii zagranej przez Tony’ego Banksa.

Na szczęście można też na „Abacab” znaleźć delikatne nawiązania do przeszłości. Podczas prac nad tą płytą zespół napisał rozbudowaną czteroczęściową suitę: „Naminanu / Dodo / Lurker / Submarine”. Pierwszą i ostatnią część stanowiły instrumentalne miniatury, z których zrezygnowano przeznaczając je na strony B singli „Keep It Dark” i „Man On The Corner”, zaś dwie środkowe części stanowią najdłuższą kompozycję na płycie, otwierającą w oryginale drugą stronę longplaya. Niestety, efekt nie jest jakoś szczególnie porywający. Kompozycja ta jest, delikatnie mówiąc, przydługa i wymęczona na siłę. Sporym szokiem dla dotychczasowych miłośników twórczości zespołu mogło okazać się nagranie „Who Dunnit?”. Jest to krótki postpunkowy żart muzyczny, notabene (słusznie!) znienawidzony przez fanów. Jedynym atutem tego utworu jest to, iż jego koncertowe wykonanie było niepowtarzalną okazją dla Mike’a Rutherforda do gry na… perkusji. Ale ten zabieg sprawia wrażenie uszczęśliwiania fanów na siłę. Liryczny „Man On The Corner” mocno nawiązuje do stylu debiutanckiej płyty Collinsa i poniekąd może kojarzyć się z „In The Air Tonight” ze względu na zbliżoną melodię oraz wykorzystanie automatu perkusyjnego. Dopiero pod sam koniec płyty mamy więcej nawiązań do klasycznego stylu Genesis, a to za sprawą balladowych utworów „Like It Or Not” oraz „Another Record”. Jednakże obie te kompozycje nie wnoszą za wiele i wydają się być klasycznymi zapchajdziurami. Co gorsza, umieszczone na końcu albumu sprawiają wrażenie dosztukowywania całości na siłę do obowiązkowych 40-minutowych rozmiarów longplaya. Podobnie zresztą ma się rzecz z nijakimi utworami „Me And Virgil” i „You Might Recall”, które powstały w trakcie tej samej sesji nagraniowej, ale pojawiły się dopiero rok później na wspomnianej już EP-ce „3x3” oraz na ogólnoświatowej wersji albumu „Three Sides Live” z czwartą, studyjną stroną.

Na płycie „Abacab” zupełnie przepadł gdzieś zespół o tak bogatym niegdyś brzmieniu. Nowe podejście do nagrywania narzucone przez producenta było niekoniecznie dobrym rozwiązaniem. „Koncertowe” brzmienie perkusji (takie nagłośnienie bębnów, by brzmiały tak głośno jak na koncercie), co prawda w miarę się sprawdziło, ale zbyt przebojowy wydźwięk poszczególnych utworów mógł sprawiać wrażenie pogoni za komercją. Szczególnie, że wydany nieco wcześniej solowy krążek Phila Collinsa odniósł ogromny sukces, przy okazji wieszając wysoko poprzeczkę.

O ile utwory z albumu „Abacab” w wersjach studyjnych mogą brzmieć mało przekonywująco, o tyle ich wykonania koncertowe (zwłaszcza „Abacab” i „Me And Sarah Jane”) prezentują się zdecydowanie lepiej, o czym można było się przekonać słuchając płyty „Three Sides Live”. Styl zapoczątkowany na płycie „Abacab” zdominował twórczość zespołu przez całe latach 80. Czy była to dobra decyzja? Odpowiedź zostawiam słuchaczom.

1973 was another important year for British pop music. With the recent arrival of glam becoming very popular, Bryan Ferry's Roxy Music proved that "avant-garde rock" can be just as commercial, inspiring many underground bands to move towards a more streamlined sound.
This compilation is based on the songs that re-energized the UK singles chart in 1973 with catchy singles from Mott The Hoople, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Faces, Status Quo, Medicine Head, Nazareth and many more.
Live performances in the UK free festival scene were dominated by a new mix of hippie, glam and space rock, with the likes of The Pink Fairies and Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come joining the leaders of Hawkwind.
