Stało się, co się stać musiało. Mikael Akerfeldt zebrał się na odwagę i ostatecznie oczyścił swą muzykę ze wszelkich metalowych elementów, które zresztą już na "Watershed" spełniały raczej rolę listka figowego, mającego skryć faktyczne zainteresowania lidera Opeth. Powstał zatem album czysto rockowy, który, choć mocno odwołuje się do tradycji gatunku, wcale nie brzmi retro.

Pozostaje jeszcze kwestia fanów, często alergicznie reagujących na wszelkie zwroty ulubionego zespołu. Wszystko wskazuje na to, że Akerfeldt świetnie zdawał sobie z tego sprawę. Ten temat pojawił się bowiem w dokumencie, zawartym na DVD, które dodane zostało do limitowanej wersji "Heritage". Z jednej strony frontman bardzo krytycznie wyraża się tam o metalowym graniu w ogólności, z drugiej jednak dość wyczerpująco tłumaczy, dlaczego zdecydował się na taki właśnie krok. Czy argumenty te przemówią do słuchaczy, pokażą niebawem wyniki sprzedaży, choć jeśli mam być szczery, nie widzę powodów dla usprawiedliwiania się przed fanami. Kolokwialnie rzecz ujmując, artysta jest od komponowania i grania, a słuchacz od słuchania, i każda z tych ról powinna zachować zdrowy dystans od tej drugiej. Tym bardziej, że za co najmniej przesadzone uważam opinie, wedle których Opeth "radykalnie" odszedł od swej dotychczasowej stylistyki.

Jeśli wziąć pod uwagę wszystkie wcześniejsze krążki Szwedów, począwszy od "Blackwater Park", trudno mówić tu o jakimkolwiek radykalizmie, czy nawet większym zaskoczeniu. Owszem, nie ma growlingu i metalowych partii, są za to nowe elementy i mniej lub bardziej czytelne nawiązania do klasyki (progresywnego) rocka, ale nie da się ukryć, że styl komponowania Akerfeldta jest wciąż na tyle charakterystyczny, że odciska swe niepowtarzalne piętno na całym materiale. "Heritage" brzmi jak album nagrany przez Opeth, trudno choćby przez chwilę mieć co do tego wątpliwości. Dziś zespół ten jest po prostu w innym miejscu niż kiedyś, a ów progres zwyczajnie musiał nadejść, jako całkowicie naturalny krok naprzód bandu, który nie chce do końca świata kręcić się w kółko. Dla mnie większym zaskoczeniem jest to, że wydarzyło się to dopiero teraz. I, choć efekt tej podróży nie jest może jednoznacznie pozytywny, z pewnością imponuje mi konsekwencja i wizja, jaka przyświecała liderowi w pracy nad recenzowanym albumem.


Już świetna, pełna barw, a przy tym symboliczna okładka (czy łudzące podobieństwo do Status Quo i ich "Quo" to czysty przypadek?), zupełnie inna niż poprzednie (i zarazem nietypowa dla twórczości Travisa Smitha), zwiastuje zmiany i sygnalizuje nowy kierunek, wyznaczony przez sam tytuł - 'Dziedzictwo'. Opeth, niczym okładkowe drzewo, wyrosłe z piekielnych korzeni, przez nic nieograniczane, wznosi się ku niebu. A że po drodze odpadło zeń kilka głów, w tym ostatnia należąca do Per'a Wiberg'a... taka jest cena progresu. Autorem koncepcji obrazka jest nie kto inny, jak Mikael, który jak zwykle odpowiada również za powstanie niemal całego materiału. Z właściwym sobie wdziękiem i poczuciem humoru, na wspomnianym wyżej DVD Akerfeldt przyznaje, że przyszło mu to całkiem łatwo. "Jak wiadomo - stwierdza frontman - jestem muzycznym geniuszem", który jest w stanie "skomponować arcydzieło, choćby tylko klaszcząc w dłonie". Świetnie, że dobre samopoczucie nie opuszcza wokalisty, fakty nie przedstawiają się już jednak równie różowo.

Podstawowy problem "Heritage" to wcale nie zmiana stylistyczna, ale jej (nie do końca udane) wdrożenie. Nie ma co się oszukiwać, Akerfeldt od zawsze miał tendencje to okazjonalnego przynudzania, ale teraz, po wykastrowaniu muzyki Opeth z mocniejszych elementów, stało się to jeszcze bardziej widoczne.


Zaczyna się bardzo elegancko. Klawiszowy "Heritage", zagrany przez Joakima Svalberga, pięknie wprowadza w nastrój, a kolejny, bardzo dobry "The Devil's Orchard" to po prostu klasyczny stary-nowy Opeth, z głównym riffem, który jest niemal autoplagiatem. Typowych dla Szwedów zagrywek nie brak również w "I Feel the Dark", choć progresywne smaczki są tu już bardzo mocno wyczuwalne. Tym sposobem docieramy do najjaśniejszego punktu płyty - "Slither". Utwór ten, jak wyjaśnia lider na DVD - poświęcony pamięci Dio, to istna perełka. Dynamiczny (gdzieś w zakamarkach pamięci wciąż rozbrzmiewa mi "Kill the King", bo duch Rainbow jest tu rzeczywiście silnie obecny), zwarty, świetnie poprowadzony utwór. Niestety, dalej słuchacz wpada w czarną dziurę. "Nepenthe" i "Häxprocess" są rozwlekłe, zbyt spokojne, by nie powiedzieć, że zwyczajnie smętne. To samo dotyczy "Famine", ale tu przynajmniej pojawiają sie świetne, gościnne, perkusyjne partie Alexa Acuny i zjawiskowe wręcz ścieżki fletu Björna J:sona Lindha (tak już się jakoś porobiło, że jakiekolwiek użycie fletu w muzyce rockowej natychmiast wywołuje skojarzenia z Jethro Tull). Także "Folklore" może skutkować nagłym opadem powiek, choć końcówka na pewno przyspieszy puls u wszystkich fanatyków klasycznego progresywnego rocka.

Mogło, i powinno, być lepiej. Jest jednak coś, co nie pozwala skreślić "Heritage". Po pierwsze, warsztat muzyków. Na tej płaszczyźnie Opeth nigdy nie pozwolił sobie na najmniejsze choćby potknięcie, jednak tym razem mam wrażenie, że cały zespół wdrapał się na szczyty swych muzycznych możliwości. Sekcja rytmiczna jest po prostu genialna, czapki z głów przed tym, co wyprawia dwójka Martinów - Mendez i Axenrot. Czarodziej klawiszy - Per Wiberg - postanowił godnie pożegnać się z kapelą, a że "Heritage" to bardzo 'parapetowa' płyta, rozszalał się na całego na Hammondzie i pianinie Rhodesa. W partiach gitary (co w sumie nie może dziwić) zachowało się najwięcej starszego Opeth. A wokal? Ten jest jak zwykle nieskazitelny, choć nie narzekałbym na odrobinę pieprzu (i wcale nie mam tu na myśli growlu). Do tego dochodzi absolutnie perfekcyjna produkcja. Producenckie mistrzostwo (mastering - Steven Wilson) jest zauważalne na każdym kroku, choćby w "Famine", gdzie słychać nawet delikatne szuranie dłoni Acuny o bębny.


Dla porządku, kilka dodatkowych słów o limitowanym wydaniu, opatrzonym trójwymiarową okładką. Krążek DVD, prócz wyczerpującego temat powstawania płyty dokumentu "making of", swoją drogą jednego z lepszych, jakie kiedykolwiek oglądałem, zawiera dwa dodatkowe kawałki audio. Niestety, o "Pyre" i "Face in The Snow" można powiedzieć tylko tyle, że są. Mdłe i emeryckie, słusznie nie trafiły na standardowe wydanie płyty. Mam nadzieję, że "Heritage" to etap przepoczwarzania się Opeth, a piękny motyl w pełnej krasie objawi nam się na następnym materiale. W końcu, miejmy to na uwadze, mamy do czynienia z "muzycznym geniuszem".
