After the dissolution of KING CRIMSON (80's edition), Bill BRUFORD recruited sax player Iaian Ballamy, keyboardist, horn and trumpet player Django Bates and acoustic bass player Mick Hutton to form EARTHWORKS - a perfect platform to showcase his true passion: jazz. Apart from BRUFORD, EARTHWORKS's latest incarnation featured Tim Garland on sax, flute and bass clarinet, Steve Hamilton on piano and Mark Hodgson on bass. The band is credited with six studio albums, two live cd's and one compilation disk.

BRUFORD himself considers their first album (the eponymous 1987 "Earthworks") one of the highlights of his career and perhaps rightly so. Even though it is very much a product of the jazz genre, the eclecticism of influences including world music elements, the varied structures and moods of the compositions, and the dynamic musicianship make this as progressive an album as one can get. With "The Sound of Surprise" released in 2001, however, the band seems to have ditched electronic sound sculptures in favour of a more traditional jazz kit; as a result, the music reaches an almost cool, hard-bop and old-school fusion, not unlike what post-boppers were doing before BRUFORD joined YES in 1968. This album, along with the subsequent studio release "The Sound of Surprise" in 2001, isn't exactly cutting edge or innovative but still quite likeable.

If you don't like jazz, stay away from this band. If you do, their first studio album comes highly recommended. If you want to hear BRUFORD and the boys hit on all cylinders, you can't go wrong with their 1994 "Stamping Ground - Live" album.

Studiował w Jazz Mobile School w Harlemie u Reggie Workmana w Nowym Jorku w latach 1981-83. Ukończył wydział instrumentalny (klasa kontrabasu) w Berklee College Of Music w Bostonie w 1990 r., Akademię Muzyczną w Katowicach na wydziale Jazzowym w 2005 r.

Założył kwartet In Tradition, z którym zdobył dwie główne nagrody na festiwalu jazzowym w Dunkierce ’84 – Francja; koncerty i nagrania dla Polskiego Radia.

W Bostonie w czasie studiów w latach 1987-92 współpracował z następującymi muzykami: Joshua Redman, Bob Moses, Igor Butman, Skip Hadden, Walter Davis, Bob Winiker, Big Band, Jeoff Kiesser, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Cheek.

Po powrocie w 1993 r. do Polski gra m.in. z: Tomaszem Szukalskim, Januszem Muniakiem, Kazimierzem Jonkiszem, Adamem Kawończykiem, Januszem Skowronem, Włodkiem Pawlikiem, Krzysztofem Herdzinem, Maciejem Strzelczykiem, Tomaszem Filipczakiem.

W 1995 r. założył kwartet Mingus Mingus, w którym grali: Robert Majewski, Maciej Sikała i Kazimierz Jonkisz. Zespół nagrał album, który otrzymał najwyższą ocenę Jazz Forum oraz zagrał liczne koncerty m.in. na Jazz Jamboree 95.

W 1996 r. założył kwartet Tribute To Monk, w którym grali: Krzysztof Herdzin, Zbyszek Brzyszcz i Kazimierz Jonkisz. Nagranie zdobyło wysokie oceny Jazz Forum.

Założył 10 osobowy Zespół „Przyjaciele” w którym grali m.in.: Janusz Muniak, Adam Kawończyk, Bogdan Hołownia, Janusz Skowron, Artur Dutkiewicz, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Michał Miśkiewicz. W 1997 r. nagranie bardzo wysoko ocenianego albumu.

W 1998 r. powstał album Aby Żyć z własną muzyką do autorsko opracowanego i recytowanego poematu etycznego Prorok – Khalil Gibran’a.

W 1999 r. współzałożył The World String Trio w składzie: Maciej Strzelczyk – skrzypce, Krzysztof Woliński – gitara. Trio licznie koncertowało w wielu krajach, festiwale m. in. Jazz Jamboree, Jazz nad Odrą, Budapest, Kuwejt.

Nagrania płyt: Grappelling – 1998 r., Live in Rabarbar – 1999 r., Live in Kiev – 2000 r., 2002 r. – wspólnie z pianistą Jarosławem Małysem i Maciejem Strzelczykiem płyty Jazz Ballads for Trio oraz Komeda Kameralnie.

W 2002 r. założył zespół Przyjaciele, z którym, wraz z Tomaszem Filipczakiem wyprodukował nagranie pt. Jan Paweł II – Inspiracje. W nagraniu udział wzięło 28 czołowych polskich muzyków, wśród których znaleźli się m.in.: Tomasz Filipczak, Tomasz Szymuś, Paweł Winiszewski, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Mariusz Fazi Mielczarek, Robert Majewski, Paweł Perliński, Krzysztof Woliński, Zbigniew Jaremko. Opracował autorsko fragmenty wypowiedzi Jana Pawła II, które recytują Krzysztof Kolberger i Ksawery Jasieński.

Od 2002 r. komponuje muzykę do filmów dokumentalnych dla TVP, w tym do serii „Dziękujemy za Solidarność”.

W 2003 r. założył Peter Pan Trio o zmiennym składzie, poświęcone polskiej muzyce w wersji latin jazz.

W 2006 r. wraz z Tomaszem Filipczakiem i zespołem Przyjaciele nagrał i wyprodukował płytę Seweryn Krajewski Smooth Jazz, która okazała się wielkim sukcesem i otrzymała status Złotej Płyty od ZPAV.

Nieprzerwanie od 1992 r. jest wykładowcą unikalnego Wydziału Jazzu w Państwowej Szkole Muzycznej II stopnia im. Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie przy ul. Bednarskiej, który założył z Henrykiem Majewskim.



Jazz bassist, also a composer, arranger and educator. He graduated from the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw in philosophy, 1981. In the years 1981-1983 he studied at the Jazz Mobile School in New York. In 1990 he graduated the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He also graduate from Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland, performance major in 2005.

In 2015 he accomplished the doctorate in music at the Academy of Music in Wroclaw. In 1984 along with Wlodek Pawlik created In Tradition Quartet, which won the Grand Prix at the jazz competition in Dunkerque (France).

During his studies in the United States he played with artists such as Bob Moses, Walter Davis, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bob Winiker Big Band and the Brookline Symphony Orchestra.

After returning home, he toured and recorded, among others, with Grazyna Auguscik, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Edyta Geppert, Ela Wojnowska, Adam Kawonczyk, Slaw Kulpowicz, Janusz Muniak, Maciej Strzelczyk, Tomasz Szukalski, Tomasz Filipczak, Artur Dutkiewicz, Bogdan Hołownia.

Toured with various bands in France, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia, Ukraine and Kuwait.

He is also co-founder of the Jazz Department at the Frederic Chopin State Music College in Warsaw, and Faculty member since 1992, also a consultant and expert of the Ministry of Culture on the teaching of jazz.

Since 2002 has produced the music for the 3 series of documentary movies “Solidarity – Thank You” – for the television channel TVP Polonia.

Since 1995 he is leading his own bands and producing the recordings over 20 cd’s.
