Keeping the same line-up from Henry's Dream, Nick Cave and company turn in yet another winner with Let Love In. Compared to Henry's Dream, Let Love In is something of a more produced effort -- longtime Cave boardsman Tony Cohen oversees things, and from the first track, one can hear the subtle arrangements and carefully constructed performances. Love, unsurprisingly, takes center stage of the album. Besides concluding with a second part to "Do You Love Me?," two of its stronger cuts are the (almost) title track "I Let Love In," and "Loverman," an even creepier depiction of lust's throttling power so gripping that Metallica ended up covering it. On the full-on explosive front, "Jangling Jack" sounds like it wants to do nothing but destroy sound systems, strange noises and overmodulations ripping throughout the song. The Seeds can always turn in almost deceptively peaceful performances as well, of course -- standouts here are "Nobody's Baby Now," with a particularly lovely guitar/piano line, and the brooding drama of "Ain't Gonna Rain Anymore." The highlight of the album, though, has little to do with love and everything to do with the group's abilities at music noir. "Red Right Hand" depicts a nightmarish figure emerging on "the edge of town," maybe a criminal and maybe something more demonic. Cave's vicious lyric combines fear and black humor perfectly, while the Seeds' performance redefines "cinematic," a disturbing organ figure leading the subtle but crisp arrangement and Harvey's addition of a sharp bell ratcheting up the feeling of doom and judgment.

Patty Smyth's Greatest Hits Featuring Scandal is a 16 song compilation that was released in 1998.

Patty Smyth was the lead singer of Scandal, a new wave/pop/rock band from New York City, in the early 1980s. Scandal burst onto the scene in late 1982, when the video for their new wave song "Goodbye To You" was given very heavy rotation on MTV. In this song, Patty is the epitome of a 1980s cool new wave chick. It's a sassy kissoff song, full of life and energy. The lyrics may be somewhat cheesy, but Patty sings them with such seriousness and conviction that you just can't help but love her and the song.

Soon afterwards, Scandal released the ballad "Love's Got A Line On You." This song showed a very sensitive side to Patty, and her singing of the lyrics gave the song a very personal and intimate touch.

Later on, Scandal scored their only top 40 hit with "The Warrior." This is a song about female empowerment, and must have served as a good role model for young ladies all over the country.

Around the same time, Scandal also released the song "Hands Tied." This is a lovely ballad which is somewhat similar in tone to "Love's Got A Line On You."

Scandal wanted to continue recording their own songs, but the record company kept trying to force them to cover other people's work. So the band broke up, and Patty went on to have a solo career.

My favorite solo song here is "Heartache Heard Around The World." There's a certain sassiness and attitude in this song that reminds me of "Goodbye To You." Clearly, Patty is a girl who can think for herself, and is very much in control of her life. I find this to be completely irresistible.

Many of the solo songs here are ballads, and they are quite beautiful. "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," "Wish I Were You," "I Should Be Laughing," and "Downtown Train" are all standout tracks.

Of all the different Patty Smyth/Scandal CDs, this one is my favorite.

Lobo is one of those talented artists from the Seventies that everyone has heard of, but can't place. His most famous hit was, "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", a number one hit with a romantic breezy feel with simple chords and lyrics. "I'd Love You To Want Me" was also a big number with Robert Johnson guesting as back-up falsetto vocalist.

The rest of the album is a smart selection of love songs and low key poetic verses of the typical Top 40 genre, but presented extremely well. "A Big Red Kite" is masterful in it's simplicity and mood and "A Simple Man" contains Lobo's earmarked guitar work. A special selection is "Rings", a huge 1971 hit by the group Cymarron that Lobo sings with the same magic.

If you like one of the songs on this collection, you'll like them all. It's first rate seventies pop.
