Jeżeli nie popełniłem błędu przy liczeniu, to „Dreaming City” jest już dziewiętnastym studyjnym albumem amerykańskiej grupy Glass Hammer. Przynajmniej tyle sygnowanych przez ten zespół pudełeczek z płytami stoi na mojej półce. Tak się szczęśliwie składa, że miałem przyjemność na bieżąco poznawać dokonania tego zespołu od samego początku. Od wydanego w 1993 roku albumu „Journey Of The Dunadan” miałem okazję śledzić losy tej amerykańskiej grupy, analizować jej przetasowania personalne, stylistyczne twisty i literackie zawiłości, które związane były prawie z każdym albumem. Bo trzeba wiedzieć, że w tym muzycznym przedsięwzięciu, na czele którego od samego początku niezmiennie stoją dwaj muzycy Fred Schendel i Steve Babb, zawsze dużo się działo. Liderzy otaczali się instrumentalistami i wokalistami w zależności od potrzeb, zatrudniali ich niczym obsadę jakiegoś filmu, zgodnie z własną reżyserską wizją. Każde ich nowe wydawnictwo przynosiło coś fascynującego i zaskakującego. Były wśród nich lepsze i słabsze płyty, były takie które dawały niesamowitą satysfakcję przy słuchaniu, były też takie, na których z mędrca szkiełkiem należało szukać wartościowych utworów. Ale wszystkie były niebanalne, wypełnione ambitną treścią i muzyką utrzymaną w szerokich ramach progresywnego rocka.

Najnowsza płyta, „Dreaming City”, należy moim zdaniem do bardziej udanych pozycji w dorobku zespołu. Ale znowu muszę o niej to powiedzieć: niebanalna. Oparta jest na literackim koncepcie opowiadającym o zdesperowanym bohaterze i jego ucieczce z miasta zagłady, o człowieku zmagającym się z serią okropności i przeciwieństw, po to by ocalić ukochaną. Ma na to tylko trzy dni. A w wyprawie towarzyszy mu Terminus, jego miecz i broń, która służy mu jako talizman pomagający w zrealizowaniu celu. To opowieść, którą wymyślił Steve Babb zainspirowany książką „Skallagrim And The Dreaming City” – pierwszą księgą z „Kronik Terminusa”, dzieła posiadającego w sobie magiczny dotyk geniuszu George’a R.R. Martina, a więc człowieka kojarzonego z „Grą o Tron”. Tak więc, „Dreaming City” to zarówno muzyka, jak i literatura. Aby naprawdę doświadczyć wszystkich walorów tej płyty trzeba spojrzeć na teksty i fabularne didaskalia, wsłuchać się uważnie w muzykę z bogato ilustrowaną książeczką w ręku i dopiero wtedy dotrze do nas pełnia przekazu. No, a muzycznie jest to moim zdaniem chyba najbardziej zaskakująca ze wszystkich dotychczasowych płyt w dorobku Glass Hammer.

Album nie ma przerw między utworami, wszystkie kolejne tematy łączą się ze sobą tworząc jedną muzyczną całość, co niewątpliwie potęguje wrażenia słuchowe i sprawia, że „Dreaming City” to trwający godzinę jeden wielki muzyczny kolos.

Płytę rozpoczyna kompozycja tytułowa „The Dreaming City”. Przedstawia ona mroczne miejsce, w którym rozpoczyna się podróż, a ciężkie basowe riffowanie i wokal Steve'a Babba daje energetyczny początek całej historii. Reese Boyd dodaje do tego gitarę, a następnie ustępuje miejsca klasycznym progresywnym organom, na których gra Fred Schendel. W „Cold Star”, nastrój zmienia się na bardziej akustyczny, z wokalnymi harmoniami w stylu Gentle Giant czy Spock’s Beard. Po raz pierwszy, i nie ostatni, pojawia się na płycie śpiew Reesa Boyda, który jest stosunkowo nowym nabytkiem w Glass Hammer (dotychczas wykonywał tylko solówki na gitarze na poprzedniej płycie pt. „Chronomonaut” z 2018 roku). Wokale wywołują przyjemne mrowienie, a sam utwór jest ekscytującą, mroczną jazdą od początku do końca, a pojawiająca się w pewnym momencie rozszerzona sekcja klawiatury Freda Schendela (fantastyczny Hammond!) jest po prostu genialna.

„Terminus” to ciekawy temat wpuszczający do muzyki Glass Hammer elementy elektroniki, a także wprowadzający kolejnego nowego człowieka – drugiego głównego wokalistę Johna Beagleya. Ten utwór ma w sobie nieco lżejszą atmosferę, coś w stylu Toto, późnego Yes czy grupy Circa:. Następujący po nim mroczny instrumentalny utwór „The Lurker Beneath” ze swoimi pulsującymi klawiszami jest zapowiedzią walki z morskim potworem. Dzieje się to w utworze zatytułowanym „Pagarna”, idealnie ilustrującym oddanie ostatniego tchu przez mocarnego potwora.

W „The Threshold Of Dreams” zespół wpływa na nieznane wody dzięki klimatowi elektroniki i techno w stylu Tangerine Dream. Można się poczuć jakby słuchało się motywu ze ścieżki dźwiękowej jakiegoś filmu. Panuje tu chłodna i spokojna atmosfera, oaza spokojnej refleksji pośród otaczającego wiru dźwięków, gdzie szlachetnie brzmiący wokal Johna Beagleya lśni na tle rozedrganych organów i nasyconej jazzem gitary…

Zdecydowane uderzenie wprowadza naszego bohatera w stan snu poprzez utwór „This Lonely World”. Ma on fantastyczną środkową sekcję z klawiaturą i pedałami basowymi, wywołując obrazy przedstawiane przez narrację. W balladowym utworze „October Ballad” pojawia się długoletnia członkini Glass Hammer, wokalistka Susie Bogdanowicz. Jako kochanka głównego bohatera śpiewa o tęsknocie za swoim ukochanym. Tęskna i delikatna to piosenka, która wdziera się do serca i duszy, ale w końcu to przecież miłosna ballada i taka musi być. Kolejny krótki instrumentalny temat „The Tower” ponownie zawiera kilka elementów elektronicznych połączonych z wyjątkowo klimatycznymi gitarami.

„A Desperate Man” to utwór hipnotyzujący, atmosferyczny, a zarazem niesamowicie chwytliwy. Zaraz po nim zaczyna się ostatnie 20 minut płyty. Podkreślmy: najlepsze 20 minut albumu „Dreaming City”. Składają się na nie dwie kompozycje: „The Key” i „The Watchman On The Wall”. Stanowią one wyborny finał tego albumu. Najpierw „The Key” ze swoim rytmicznym riffem i mocnymi pociągnięciami organów jawi się jako mocarny hard rocker, a zaraz po nim wielowątkowy „The Watchman On The Wall” - to potężna muzyczna epopeja, która ze swoimi ponad 11 minutami wyróżnia się w tym zestawie nie tylko długością, ale i przysparza mu prawdziwie progresywno-rockowego blasku. Grzmiące gitarowe riffy Reesa Boyda, a także jego śpiew, pięknie łączą się z dynamicznymi bębnami (świetny Aaron Raulston) oraz z basem, aby dać w efekcie wyróżniający się na tej płycie utwór muzyczny, który kończy się efektownym gitarowym solo zagranym na gitarze wah-wah. Czuć tutaj atmosferę starych nagrań grupy Rush. To wspaniałe zamknięcie tego udanego albumu.

Podsumowując, „Dreaming City” to płyta, która naprawdę może się podobać. Trzeba jej koniecznie słuchać jako jednej nieprzerwanej całości. Dopiero wtedy ukazuje nam ona swój prawdziwy blask. Jest ona trochę cięższa i mniej symfoniczna niż wcześniejsze płyty Glass Hammer. Być może nie zaskakuje nowatorstwem, ale bez wątpienia urzeka jakością zebranej na niej muzyki. Zespół postanowił wrócić do swoich wczesnych wpływów: Rush, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant i Yes, wprowadził też nowe elementy w postaci ewidentnych inspiracji muzyką Tangerine Dream. Są na tym krążku bardziej przestrzenne fragmenty progresywne, są też tematy utrzymane w klasycznie rockowym klimacie, kiedy to zespół trzyma się bardziej bezpośrednich rozwiązań, a gitary mają brzmienie bardziej surowe niż zwykle. Nie zmienia to faktu, że jako całość album jest dobrze zbalansowany z licznymi rockowymi utworami, spokojnymi balladami, progrockowymi szaleństwami i marzycielskimi elektronicznymi przerywnikami. The first sound on Back in Black is the deep, ominous drone of church bells -- or "Hell's Bells," as it were, opening the album and AC/DC's next era with a fanfare while ringing a fond farewell to Bon Scott, their late lead singer who partied himself straight to hell. But this implies that Back in Black is some kind of tribute to Scott, which may be true on a superficial level -- black is a funeral cover, hell's bells certainly signify death -- but this isn't filled with mournful songs about the departed. It's a more fitting tribute, actually, since AC/DC not only carried on without him, but they delivered a record that to the casual ear sounds like the seamless successor to Highway to Hell, right down to how Brian Johnson's screech is a dead ringer for Scott's growl. Most listeners could be forgiven for thinking that Johnson was Scott, but Johnson is different than Bon. He's driven by the same obsessions -- sex and drink and rock & roll, basically -- but there isn't nearly as much malevolence in his words or attitude as there was with Scott. Bon sounded like a criminal, Brian sounds like a rowdy scamp throughout Back in Black, which helps give it a real party atmosphere. Of course, Johnson shouldn't be given all the credit for Back in Black, since Angus and Malcolm carry on with the song-oriented riffing that made Highway to Hell close to divine. Song for song, they deliver not just mammoth riffs but songs that are anthems, from the greasy "Shoot to Thrill" to the pummeling "Back in Black," which pales only next to "You Shook Me All Night Long," the greatest one-night-stand anthem in rock history. That tawdry celebration of sex is what made AC/DC different from all other metal bands -- there was no sword & sorcery, no darkness, just a rowdy party, and they never held a bigger, better party than they did on Back in Black.

Half Speed ReMasters HiRes Re-Issue: Regarded as one of The Rolling Stones’ all-time great albums, ‘Sticky Fingers’ captured the bands trademark combination of swagger and tenderness in a superb collection. The classic album features timeless songs such as ‘Brown Sugar,’ ‘Wild Horses,’ ‘Bitch,’ ‘Sister Morphine’ and ‘Dead Flowers’ and showcases the inventive song writing of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and formidable guitar licks from Mick Taylor. All Deluxe and Super Deluxe formats will feature a generous selection of previously unavailable material. These include the alternative version of the chart-topping single ‘Brown Sugar’ featuring Eric Clapton; unreleased interpretations of ‘Bitch,’ ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knocking’ and ‘Dead Flowers’; an acoustic take on the anthemic ‘Wild Horses’, and five tracks recorded live at The Roundhouse in 1971 including ‘Honky Tonk Women’ and ‘Midnight Rambler.’

"Pieced together from outtakes and much-labored-over songs, Sticky Fingers manages to have a loose, ramshackle ambience that belies both its origins and the dark undercurrents of the songs. It's a weary, drug-laden album -- well over half the songs explicitly mention drug use, while the others merely allude to it -- that never fades away, but it barely keeps afloat. Apart from the classic opener, "Brown Sugar" (a gleeful tune about slavery, interracial sex, and lost virginity, not necessarily in that order), the long workout "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and the mean-spirited "Bitch," Sticky Fingers is a slow, bluesy affair, with a few country touches thrown in for good measure. The laid-back tone of the album gives ample room for new lead guitarist Mick Taylor to stretch out, particularly on the extended coda of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." But the key to the album isn't the instrumental interplay -- although that is terrific -- it's the utter weariness of the songs. "Wild Horses" is their first non-ironic stab at a country song, and it is a beautiful, heart-tugging masterpiece. Similarly, "I Got the Blues" is a ravished, late-night classic that ranks among their very best blues. "Sister Morphine" is a horrifying overdose tale, and "Moonlight Mile," with Paul Buckmaster's grandiose strings, is a perfect closure: sad, yearning, drug-addled, and beautiful. ZZ Top (pronounced "zee zee top") is an American rock band from Houston, Texas, formed in 1969. The group consists of founder Billy Gibbons (guitar, lead vocals), Dusty Hill (bass, vocals) and Frank Beard (drums, percussion). Initially rooted in blues, ZZ Top's style has evolved throughout their career, with a signature sound based on Gibbons' blues guitar style and Hill and Beard's rhythm section. Their lyrics, often embellished with sexual innuendo, focus on their Texas roots and humor. Popular for their live performances, the group has staged several elaborate tours. ZZ Top formed after the demise of Gibbons' previous band, Moving Sidewalks. Within a year, they signed with London Records and released ZZ Top's First Album (1971). Subsequent releases, such as their first top-ten album Tres Hombres (1973) and the singles "La Grange" and "Tush", gained extensive radio airplay. By the mid-1970s, they had become renowned in North America for their live act, highlighted by their performances during the Worldwide Texas Tour from 1976 to 1977, which made them national stars and was a critical and commercial success. Following a two-year break after facing creative stagnation and exhaustion, ZZ Top reinvented themselves in the late 1970s with a new musical direction and public image. Beginning with their albums Degüello (1979) and El Loco (1981), they experimented with instruments including clavinets, saxophones, and synthesizers, while Gibbons and Hill grew long beards as part of their image. ZZ Top gained international favor with the records Eliminator (1983) and Afterburner (1985), which integrated influences from new wave, punk, and dance-rock, and established a more mainstream sound. The popularity of their music videos, including those for "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Legs", helped propel them onto the television channel MTV and made them one of the more prominent artists in 1980s pop culture. Their Afterburner Tour set records for the highest-attended and highest-grossing concert tour of 1986. After additional acclaim with the release of their tenth album Recycler (1990) and the Recycler Tour, their experimentation continued with the albums Antenna (1994), Rhythmeen (1996), XXX (1999), and Mescalero (2003), with mixed successes. The group most recently released La Futura (2012) and Goin′ 50 (2019), the latter of which is a compilation album commemorating the band's 50th anniversary. ZZ Top has released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million albums worldwide. They have won three MTV Video Music Awards, and in 2004, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone ranked Gibbons number 32 on its list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Throughout their career, as a band and as individuals, they have supported several campaigns and charities, including Childline, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and a fundraiser for the Delta Blues Museum.

Buffalo Springfield's time was short they formed in 1966 and split in 1968 but their legacy was vast. Some of their legend was cultivated in the ensuing decades, after founding members Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young went on to fame either on their own or with such groups as Poco and Manassas, but much of it rested upon "For What It's Worth," a protest song written and sung by Stills, that not only became their Top Ten breakthrough in 1967 but their enduring anthem, eventually serving as shorthand for all the political turmoil of the 1960s.
