Without second guitarist David Knopfler, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock. Naturally, this means that Mark Knopfler's ambitions as a songwriter are growing, as the storytelling pretensions of Making Movies indicate. Fortunately, his skills are increasing, as the lovely "Romeo and Juliet," "Tunnel of Love," and "Skateaway" indicate. And Making Movies is helped by a new wave-tinged pop production, which actually helps Knopfler's jazzy inclinations take hold. The record runs out of steam toward the end, closing with the borderline offensive "Les Boys," but the remainder of Making Movies ranks among the band's finest work.

Neil Young's 2003 Greendale tour was unique, bringing his 2002 rock opera of the same name to life, with a full cast acting out the story of the Green family -- who are at the center of an impending eco-disaster -- alongside the songs played live by Neil and Crazy Horse. The tour was documented with a concert film, directed by Bernard Shakey (aka Neil himself), and now Neil's releasing a live album titled Return to Greendale that's out on November 6 via Warner Brothers.

Part of Young's "Performance Series," Return to Greendale will be released as a two-CD and 2LP vinyl set, as well as a limited edition, numbered box set that comes with a Blu-ray of the full concert film and a DVD of the Inside Greendale documentary.

Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock -- with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan -- preferring jazz, traditional pop, blues, and R&B.
