A superlative introduction to the world of Jamaican music, Tougher Than Tough is a treasure trove of information, filled with unforgettable music. Across four discs and 95 songs, this set spans the entire history of the island's vibrant music scene, hitting all the major stylistic bases along the way, and rounding up many of Jamaica's greatest artists. It's evident that a great amount of thoughtful time and effort went into this package and, although collectors will howl at the many omissions and some of the selections, this set wasn't intended for them, but for a general audience interested in beginning to explore the music more deeply.
Disc one begins in 1958 with the Folkes Brothers' "Oh Carolina," arguably the first ever proto-ska release, cut during producer Prince Buster's first ever recording session. It continues through the rise of pure ska and through the shift to rocksteady. Disc two concentrates on the reggae years and the rise of the DJs, while the third is given over entirely to roots. The final disc brings things bang up to date, following the trajectory of the dancehalls. The set comes full circle with the final track, Shaggy's smash hit cover of "Oh Carolina." From rude reggae to ragga, dulcet vocal groups to dueling DJs, The Story of Jamaican Music is indeed just that. Of course, there's a wealth of equally masterful music that didn't make the cut, and the booklet discusses a multitude of songs not included. But this is history 101; hopefully, students will continue their studies on their own.

When Songs of Freedom was released originally in 1992, it was a perfect complement to either a greatest hits collection like Legend or the entire collection of the reggae master's albums. Songs boasts enough of the recognizable from Marley's canon to address the hit seeker, but the set also reaches way, way back to include Marley's first single, the youthful "Judge Not" from 1962, and then closes more than four hours later with a 1980 live take of "Redemption Song" from his last concert. In between are live takes, studio remixes, and, of course, standard looks at Marley standards, playing together as a perfect balance between the familiar and the new. The flow of famous takes increases into CDs 3 and 4, where "No Woman, No Cry" appears from a 1976 set at the Roxy and where "Jammin'" and "Exodus" come in mixes that were new to fans in 1992. He was able to popularize tunes about both the repression of African nations and their liberation while also bringing to rock audiences an undeniably Jamaican music, breaking the U.S. and British geographic strongholds on the 1970s pop and rock marketplace. Never mind that he made Island Records' first fortune, he also created a body of work so lasting that a four-CD set heavy on alternate versions can stand out in any contemporary music collection. For the 1999 reissue of the original 1992 box set, no new music has been added. The format has changed, though, from a long-box presentation to a cube containing individual slipcased CDs. It's still a remarkable gem.

UB40 – brytyjski zespół muzyczny grający muzykę reggae

Nazwa zespołu pochodzi od oznaczenia brytyjskiego formularza wydawanego osobom pobierającym zasiłek dla bezrobotnych (ang. Unemployment Benefit, Form 40). Powstał w 1978 w Birmingham, największą popularność zdobył w składzie:

Członkowie zespołu tworzyli efektownie aranżowane piosenki, bazujące na wzorcu rytmicznym reggae (np. King, Food For Thought, My Way Of Thinking, The Earth Dies Screaming, Don't Slow Down, One In Ten), nagrywał też własne wersje znanych przebojów (m.in. I Think It's Going To Rain Today R. Newmana, Red Red Wine Neila Diamonda, Please Don't Make Me Cry W. Tuckera, Many Rivers To Cross Jimmy'ego Cliffa, Can't Help Falling In Love Elvisa Presleya i I'll Be Your Baby Tonight Boba Dylana). Muzycy UB40 współpracowali m.in z Robertem Palmerem, Pato Bantonem, Bittym McLeanem, Chrissie Hynde, Madness, Hunterz.
