...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...


Rzadko się zdarza, by najpopularniejszy album danego wykonawcy był koncertówką. Jeszcze rzadziej, by takie wydawnictwo sprzedało się w nakładzie przekraczającym milion egzemplarzy i było obecne na większości liczących się listach płyt wszech czasów. A tak właśnie wygląda sytuacja z The Allman Brothers Band i kultowym "At Fillmore East". Przed jego wydaniem zespół nie odnosił znaczących sukcesów, jednak media muzyczne coraz częściej donosiły o jego porywających występach na żywo. Do takich zdecydowanie należała seria koncertów z marca 1971 roku w nowojorskim Fillmore East. Gdy tylko ukazał się dwupłytowy album prezentujący fragmenty tego wydarzenia, spotkał się z bardzo entuzjastycznym przyjęciem recenzentów oraz słuchaczy, którzy pobiegli wykupywać szybko wyczerpujący się nakład. Nie da się zaprzeczyć, że to doskonały dokument tamtych czasów, gdy na rockowych koncertach nie chodziło o odegranie kilku przebojów. Wykonawcy często stawali na mniej oczywisty repertuar, nierzadko ograniczając ilość własnych kompozycji na rzecz bluesowych standardów, traktując je raczej jako punkt wyjścia do ekscytujących improwizacji, zaczerpniętych od jazzmanów. The Allman Brothers Band byli w takim graniu niemalże bezkonkurencyjni. Podobne stylistycznie zespoły, dające równie porywające koncerty, mogę wymienić na palcach jednej ręki: Cream, Jimi Hendrix z okresu Band of Gypsys, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Grateful Dead oraz kwartet Rory'ego Gallaghera.

Oryginalne wydanie "At Fillmore East" składa się z siedmiu utworów umieszczonych na dwóch płytach winylowych. Celowo lub nie, pierwszy dysk wypełniają standardy, a drugi autorskie kompozycje. Początek jest jeszcze dość zachowawczy. "Statesboro Blues" z repertuaru Blind Williego McTella oraz "Done Somebody Wrong" Elmore'a Jamesa zostały zaprezentowane w niewiele ponad czterominutowych wersjach. Tyle jednak wystarczyło, by wydobyć z tych klasycznych bluesów wszystko, co najlepsze, zachowując wyluzowany klimat pierwowzorów i wzbogacając je o potężną dawkę rockowego czadu. Cały skład, wsparty przez przygrywającego na harmonijce Thoma Doucette'a, pokazuje się tu od najlepszej strony. Muzycy są fantastycznie zgrani, a ich grze nie można odmówić kreatywności. Jednak naprawdę rewelacyjne rzeczy zaczynają się dziać od ośmiominutowego wykonania "Stormy Monday" T-Bone Walkera, z rozbudowaną częścią środkową, z porywającymi solówkami gitarzystów Duane'a Allmana i Dickeya Bettsa oraz Gregga Allmana na organach. Tego typu granie w tamtych czasach było niezwykle popularne, jednak rzadko aż tak porywające. A z każdym kolejnym utworem muzycy osiągają wyższy poziom zespołowego grania. Już "You Don't Love Me" Williego Cobbsa, rozimprowizowany do niemalże dwudziestu minut, wydaje się absolutnym szczytem takiego grania. Szczególnie ciekawie wypada moment, gdy milknie wszystko, z wyjątkiem gitary Duane'a, dającego wspaniały pOPIS, po którym następuje nie mniej ciekawa, już zespołowa improwizacja o lekko jazzującym charakterze.

A przecież potem jest jeszcze lepiej. Instrumentalny jam "Hot 'Lanta", mimo że skondensowany do pięciu minut, w jeszcze wspanialszy sposób pokazuje talent muzyków do wspólnego improwizowania. Wszyscy kolejno prezentują tutaj swoje pOPISy, nie zapominając jednak o zachowaniu interakcji z pozostałymi. Jednak muzycy przebijają to wszystko genialnym wykonaniem kompozycji Bettsa "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", która przecież już na "Idlewild South" była niezwykle porywającym nagraniem. Utwór rozrósł się tutaj ponad dwukrotnie, muzycy fantastycznie rozbudowali znane już tematy i wprowadzili zupełnie nowe, dzięki czemu kompozycja nabrała zupełnie nowej jakości. Wydawać by się mogło, że tak ekscytującego wykonania - nie pod względem technicznym, ale kreatywności i wyczucia - nie da się już przebić. Muzycy znów to jednak zrobili. Finałowe wykonanie "Whipping Post", doskonałej kompozycji Gregga Allmana z eponimicznego debiutu grupy, to absolutne apogeum całej twórczości The Allman Brothers Band. Zgrabna piosenka rozrosła się tutaj do blisko dwudziestopięciominutowej formy, która pozostawia daleko w tyle niemal całą pozostałą muzykę bluesrockową. To niezwykłe zaangażowanie i wzorowa współpraca całego składu, te wszystkie solówki, grane z niesamowitą pasją, to niespodziewane, klimatyczne zwolnienie w połowie - tego już naprawdę nie udałoby się przebić. Album słusznie się w tym miejscu kończy. Już nic lepszego nie mogło się na nim znaleźć.

Cóż więcej można dodać? "At Fillmore East" to po prostu klasyczny album, który każdy szanujący się wielbiciel rocka i bluesa powinien znać. Być może właśnie tutaj bezpretensjonalne rockowe granie, bez żadnych skrzywień w stronę jazzu (nie licząc pożyczenia improwizacji), muzyki poważnej czy awangardy, osiągnęło swój najwyższy szczyt? Ja w każdym razie nie znajduję tu żadnych wad, a jedynie coraz więcej powodów do zachwytu. Ocena nie może być inna niż maksymalna.

The eagerly awaited new album from Maroon 5, JORDI, is the band’s first since the critically acclaimed Red Pill Blues. The album will include the recently released hit single “Beautiful Mistakes ft. Megan Thee Stallion” as well as fan favorites “Memories” and “Nobody’s Love.”

This time around, a bevy of legendary guests and high-profile friends join Maroon 5. The first release off of the album, “Beautiful Mistakes,” (which is out now), features Megan Thee Stallion. blackbear joins the band on “Echo,” while Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks teams up with the group for “Remedy.” Academy Award winner H.E.R. guests on “Convince Me Otherwise,” and the late Juice WRLD makes a posthumous appearance on “Can’t Leave You Alone.” The album will also include the band’s triple-platinum “Memories” and a “Memories” remix featuring late legend Nipsey Hussle and rapper YG. Up and coming Zimbabwean artist Bantu is also featured on “One Light.”

Mose Allison's career in his golden and quite fruitful years has yielded many surprises and challenges, not the least of which is this delightful offering. He continues to write attractive, bouncy, and fun tunes carried by his signature roiling piano style and sly lyrics. For this effort, producer and Allison disciple Ben Sidran hooked him up with musicians from the modern New Orleans jazz scene, including Astral Project members – the extraordinary drummer John Vidacovich, tenor saxophonist Tony Dagradi, and guitarist Steve Masakowski.

Veteran bassist Bill Huntington rounds out this very talented ensemble that happily works with Allison step by step to produce some of the singer/songwriter/instrumentalist's most enjoyable music, a tall order but easily recognizable once the listening commences. John D. Loudermilk's "You Call It Joggin'," with the retort "but I call it runnin' around," is one of the all-time classic skeptical lyric lines, as applicable to contemporary lifestyles as anything in the urban lexicon. His revisit of "That's Your Red Wagon" is another timeless tale of emotional baggage; Percy Mayfield's "Stranger In My Own Hometown" is purely autobiographical; while "Sleepy Lagoon" is an easygoing, romantic fantasy theme. Of the eight Allison originals, "The Getting Paid Waltz" depicts every musician's nightmare playing in a nightclub, impatiently waiting for the cheapskate owner eventually to pay up. "Was" is a light waltz for has-beens; "Sentimental Fool" talks about the paradox that he "messed around and got humanized"; and the New Orleans shuffle "Big Brother" – including smart tradeoffs with Dagradi – is a post-technology cautionary tale, even more relevant in modern times with the advent of Skype, Twitter, and Facebook. A statement on the music industry and jazz in particular, the slinky "Long Song" delineates in four minutes what need and not need be present in popular commercial or creative progressive music, and is a perfect companion to his song "My Top 40 Hit Record." Allison is always a delight to hear, a consistently marvelous piano player, and in very good company with this expert band that suits his style and personality perfectly. My Backyard is one of the best records of his career.
