The Meters defined New Orleans funk, not only on their own recordings, but also as the backing band for numerous artists, including many produced by Allen Toussaint. Where the funk of Sly Stone and James Brown was wild, careening, and determinedly urban, the Meters were down-home and earthy. Nearly all of their own recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on the organic and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ, creating a distinctive sound that earned a small, devoted cult during the '70s, including musicians like Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, both of whom used the group as a backing band for recording. Despite their reputation as an extraordinary live band, the Meters never broke into the mainstream, but their sound provided the basis for much of the funk and hip-hop of the '80s and '90s.

Amy Jade Winehouse (ur. 14 września 1983 w Londynie, zm. 23 lipca 2011 tamże) – brytyjska piosenkarka wykonująca muzykę z pogranicza soulu, jazzu i R&B, kompozytorka i autorka tekstów piosenek.

Jej znakiem firmowym był głęboki, ekspresywny wokal kontraltowy i własne teksty piosenek odnoszące się do jej osobistych przeżyć.

Jej płyty i piosenki otrzymały blisko 60 nagród i nominacji do prestiżowych nagród muzycznych. Debiutancki album Winehouse, Frank (2003) uzyskał znaczny sukces komercyjny a także uznanie krytyków i nominację do Mercury Prize. Za jej następny album Back to Black (2006) Winehouse otrzymała pięć nagród Grammy w 2008, rekordową ich liczbę przyznaną kiedykolwiek kobiecie w jednym rozdaniu i rekordową liczbę przyznaną kiedykolwiek artyście brytyjskiemu, z których trzy "Najlepszy Nowy Artysta", "Nagranie Roku" i "Piosenka Roku" zaliczane są do 4 najważniejszych nagród Grammy. Winehouse otrzymała również trzy najważniejsze nagrody Ivor Novello Awards: w 2004 i 2007 za najlepszą piosenkę współczesną (za "Stronger Than Me" i "Rehab") oraz za najlepszą piosenkę muzycznie i lirycznie w 2008 ("Love Is a Losing Game"). Trapiona licznymi uzależnieniami i problemami ze zdrowiem psychicznym, w wieku 27 lat, zmarła w swoim domu w Londynie w wyniku zatrucia alkoholowego, dołączając tym samym do tzw. Klubu 27.

Amy Winehouse urodziła się w szpitalu Chase Farm, w północnym Londynie, w żydowskiej rodzinie. Jej ojciec, Mitchell "Mitch" Winehouse, był montażystą paneli okiennych, a później kierowcą taksówki, zaś jej matka Janis Winehouse (z domu Seaton), była farmaceutką. Przodkowie Winehouse byli rosyjskimi i polskimi Żydami, którzy wyemigrowali do Londynu. Amy miała starszego brata Alexa (ur. w 1979). Rodzina mieszkała w dzielnicy Southgate w Londynie, gdzie Amy uczęszczała do szkoły podstawowej Osidge oraz przez pewien czas również do niedzielnej szkółki żydowskiej. W jednym z wywiadów stwierdziła, że nienawidziła szkółki niedzielnej i uprosiła ojca aby ją z niej wypisał, w rezultacie czego jej wiedza o religii żydowskiej była znikoma. W tym samym wywiadzie stwierdziła też, że bywała w synagodze tylko raz do roku w czasie święta Jom Kipur.

Kilkoro członków rodziny, zarówno po stronie jej matki jak i ojca było zawodowymi muzykami jazzowymi. Jej babcia, Cynthia, była piosenkarką i przyjaciółką saksofonisty Ronnie Scotta. Ona, oraz jej rodzice wpłynęli na wczesne zainteresowanie Amy muzyką jazzową. Jej ojciec, Mitch, często śpiewał jej piosenki Franka Sinatry. Amy kilka razy uratowała się przed karami w szkole wykonując w gabinecie dyrektorki swoją ulubioną piosenkę Sinatry Fly Me to the Moon. Rodzice Amy rozwiedli się, gdy miała 9 lat. Mieszkała z matką, ale weekendy spędzała u ojca i jego partnerki w Hatfield Heath, Essex.

W 1992 r. jej babka, Cynthia, zaproponowała, aby Amy zaczęła uczęszczać do szkoły teatralnej Susi Earnshaw, gdzie przez cztery lata brała weekendowe lekcje śpiewu i stepowania.
