..::OPIS::.. 2 years after the brilliant musicians that made up the classic Iron Savior line-up has assembled to create their magnum opus, they have provided us with yet another astounding feat of brilliance. There were some slight changes on this album from the last, but for the most part this is exactly the same genius that brought about "Unification". One difference is the change over from current Gamma Ray drummer Dan Zimmerman to former Gamma Ray drummer Thomas Knack. Knack's drumming style is very similar to Zimmerman's, although the sound he gets out of his set is a bit more dense, particularly the more bass-like character of the snare. Another difference is the slightly less active presence of the keyboards, and this is one of the primary reasons why I gave this album a slightly lower score. Andreas Kuck is an element of the band that helps to distinguish Savior from their inspiration Judas Priest, in addition to an excellent keyboardist, and his skills should be maximized, not downplayed. One notable difference that probably added to the more heavy feel of this album on several tracks is that bassist Jan Eckert co-wrote about half of them. This is a positive by all standards, as it helps to give this album a needed contrast from it's predecessor. Other than the lack of a narrative or an instrumental to turn it into a 12 song concept album, rather than a 11 track one with a cover to make it 12, the album is mainly the same. Many of the tracks bear similarities found on ones in the previous two albums, and some sound completely new, such as "Back Into the Light" and "After the War". And as with their last effort, each individual song deserves attention. Never Say Die - We kick off the song with another cosmic sounding intro, though this one is a bit less haunting. We follow with another up tempo ride through a barrage of riffs and lead fill ins. The verses are a bit more distant sounding than the ones found on it's Unification equivolent "Coming Home", but otherwise it is structured very much the same, with a brilliant solo duel between Piet and Kai. Seek and Destroy - High speed insanity similar to "Starborn" from the Unification album, though alot heavier sounding. Piet's vocal delivery has alot more grunts, adding to the thrashy feel of this blistering rocket ride. Thomas Knack's drumming is unbelievable, rivaling most of Zimmerman's work to date. Solar Wings - This is Kai's lone compositional offering for this, and he does not let us down. The intro guitar riff is another brilliant hommage to Painkiller era Judas Priest, and the vocal deliver is loaded with high pitched wails that would make Rob Halford proud. Excellent lead work and some riveting lyrics as well. I've Been to Hell - Another fast one with probably one of the most powerful choruses on the album, probably the reason why it was the single that precedes this release. Plenty of lead treats here as well, as Piet takes the helm on guitar again. Dragons Rising - This is one of the more progressive sounding tracks on the album, containing some good keyboard work. The lyrics are also a bit more metaphorical than they usually are, combined with another ingenius vocal delivery. Predators - The opening riff to this one sounds like a jazzed up version of "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath, although the feel is a bit closer to a more mid-tempo Judas Priest cooker. On this song we are also treated to a duet trade-off during the verses between Kai and Piet, one of my favorite parts of the Classic Savior era. One final note, 3rd guitarist Joachim "Piesal" Kustner plays a brilliant solo on this track, which is an important preview as he will be picking up the slack left by Kai's departure soon after this album. Made of Metal - This song is probably the closest thing to an epic track on this album, flirting with the 7 minute mark. Some nice changes in this one, although it doesn't quite match the drama that was present on "Eye to Eye" off of Unification. Firing the Guns - Another blistering speed track bearing some similarity to "I've been to Hell", though the riff is a bit heavier. Kai takes over lead duties here, but the chorus is the real point of interest. Eye of the World - This song sounds almost like a hybrid of "Protect the Law" from the debut and "Prisoner of the Void" off of Unification. A really powerful chorus here and some hard hitting changes. Point of interest here is another great solo interchange between Kai and Piet. Back into the Light - This is where the album starts to sound less like a continuation of Unification and more like it's own beast. The verses are extremely haunting, between the galloping bassline and the distant string synths and guitars, and fully realized by Piet's quasi-spoken whisper vocals. Although the song is dominated by this galloping feel, there are some heavy textural contrasts that make it quite complex. The chorus is, as usual, the focal point of the song. After the War - Another highly progressive track that gives a slight impression of combining the power of "Unchained" and the haunting ballad attributes of "Forevermore". Here we are given yet another brilliant duet between Piet and Jan Eckert, this time they almost seem to be trying to outdo each other. Piet, in my opinion, rips out his most amazing guitar solo ever during this track. Great closer to an amazing album. Delivering the Goods - Another Judas Priest cover to complement the amazing concept story that preceded it. As with all the other Priest covers they do, the primary contrast is the increased heaviness in the production and the different interpretation Piet gives it vocally. In conclusion, this album rivals it's predecessor, but doesn't quite beat it. This is definitely a MUST HAVE for any fan of traditional or power metal, particularly those who want to hear something post Painkiller with some serious balls to it. Unfortunately this would be the last release with the full classic line up of Iron Savior, and as such it's become a keepsake for me amongst my metal collection. hells unicorn ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. ..::OPIS::.. I could not believe my ears! What was I listening to? a German version of Bon Jovi? Or, rather, Bon Jovi imitated Sinner? Immediately metabolizzai "Hypnotized" and "Faster Than Line" seemed like a really interesting piece. Of course, I was struck by his power, mitigated by keyboards. I tried to find differences between Sinner, Bon Jovi and other similar groups behold "Comin' Out Fighting". The title track is a piece that incorporates some American Metal mixed with Judas Priest, becoming a little gem for the nascent Power Metal, though, if I judge this track a great tribute to the Rolling Stones (not stylistically, of course, but only with a desire to be revolutionary, each in his day!). "Age Of Rock" is another Pomp Metal, with aggression but with a lot of melody . Great work of Jon Airey and Chris Tsangarides. "rebel Yell" is a famous Billy Idol song, here is very faithful to the original. Great guitar solo. Here the side 1 closes, leaving me really amazed by the quality of the music! Side 2 is open by "Lost In A Minute", with a Rainbow (with J.L. Turner) style. Only who feels that Sinner is a German band and not English, because the song is... I do not know how to say... is more angry and more direct. Great solo in the style of Blackmore. And good carpet of keyboards. "Don't Tell Me (That The Love Is Gone)" is a great Power Ballad. But... Just a second... Why Sinner sounds like Journey? Simple. Sinner being a German band Scorpions was too obvious copy, with a voice that is a copy of one of Steve Perry! To describe "Germany Rocks" you just have heard Sinner and Axel Rudi Pell in the period with Rob Rock and Jeff Scott Soto. "playing With Fire" (Hmmm... That Metal title!) is a great melodic Speed Metal, typical of 80's Metal, in this case with good originality. Here, too, great guitars and keyboards. A little anonymous the sheet music for drums. The refrain really do get in the mind. "Madhouse" closes the album, in a kind of accelerated mid tempo with typical keyboards of Pomp Metal. Only now I realize some influence of Magnum, a song (but I would say in an album) with big choruses and soli. Today's style Sinner seems the usual style of the 80's Metal. But, if I place in those years, I find that Sinner was a band, in my opinion, essential to certain melodic Power Metal, with regard to the use of guitars and keyboards. ..::OPIS::.. This album is to the previous 'Danger Zone' much like Mötley Crüe's 'Theatre of Pain' is to 'Shout at the Devil', in that it is of a similar style, but has a more laid-back and commercial feel, in a bad way. It's neither as heavy, nor as metal and the songwriting has taken a turn for the just plain worse. Granted, it's nowhere nearly as disappointing as 'Theatre', given that 'Shout' is an undisputed and timeless classic whereas 'Danger Zone' checks in with a mere "solid" status, but the similarity in the overall quality decreasing due to a (highly probable) compromise of integrity is definitely there. The songs on here just don't kill the way they did on the previous album. The intensely screaming/screamingly intense heavy fucking metal delivery of the year before has transformed into somewhat of a more poppy buttrock one, and that goes for the songwriting too in several places. It's a bit like the two songs "Midnight Mover" and "Screaming For a Love-Bite" found on the Accept album from the same year ('Metal Heart', 1985), with their Def Leppard-esque multi-layered-and-harmonized vocal choruses and Van Halen-esque poppy riffs and licks, but with the one exception that those two songs are pure classics and just fucking kick ass, and really no song on here even comes close to that level of quality. For the record, I'm just as much a fan of 80's buttrock as one of old-school heavy metal; it's just that Sinner doesn't sound nearly as comfortable straying into poppier territories as when done by Accept (probably the biggest influence on this band as one can expect; same country, same era and on this album even one of the guitarists is the same - not Wolf Hoffmann of course, but Hermann Frank, who played alongside him on 1982's 'Restless & Wild' and 1984's 'Balls to the Wall'). For one, Accept sure do it with a lot more energy, which is always a good thing with this type of music. Well now, even with a slightly corrupted spirit, there is still plenty of no-frills heavy metal power to gain here (it's 1985 dammit, kinda hard to go that much wrong), but as previously indicated, missing from here is that one totally killer, addictive cut that can make an entire album more memorable as whole. On 'Danger Zone' you had the opening title track serving just as that, but in case you're wondering, the opener on this album, "Born to Rock", certainly is NOT the answer to that. It's not even what you could consider a highlight, it just kinda plods along really. As for the best song, "Shout!" (as in "Shout at the Devil", really, the chorus is very similar) would be a good candidate, boasting a swift and energetic opening riff straight out of the Randy Rhoads school of kicking ass. Other above average cuts include a couple of solid crunch-groovers in "Out of Control" and "Hand of Fate", the energetic yet atmospheric and quite melodic "Emerald" and the all-out speed metal assault of "Too Late to Runaway" that would make UltraBoris ejaculate himself silly (maybe it already has, considering he liked the previous album so much - but if so, where's his review of this I wonder?). Plenty of solidity here, yes, but again, no real ungodly Metal Health (a.k.a. "Bang Your Head" by Quiet Riot, who are generally shit but certainly have a few classic songs under their belt) or Rock You to Motherfucking Hell (Grim Reaper) type of numbers to be found anywhere. In conclusion, nothing spectacular to see here folks, but I suppose if you really loved 'Danger Zone', there should be well enough here to keep you happy. However, let all you haters of Los Angeles Music be aware of stuff like the try-too-hard, balladic fluff of "The Storm Broke Loose" or the cheesy chorus of "Bad Girl" before purchase. ..::OPIS::.. This album is to the previous 'Danger Zone' much like Mötley Crüe's 'Theatre of Pain' is to 'Shout at the Devil', in that it is of a similar style, but has a more laid-back and commercial feel, in a bad way. It's neither as heavy, nor as metal and the songwriting has taken a turn for the just plain worse. Granted, it's nowhere nearly as disappointing as 'Theatre', given that 'Shout' is an undisputed and timeless classic whereas 'Danger Zone' checks in with a mere "solid" status, but the similarity in the overall quality decreasing due to a (highly probable) compromise of integrity is definitely there. The songs on here just don't kill the way they did on the previous album. The intensely screaming/screamingly intense heavy fucking metal delivery of the year before has transformed into somewhat of a more poppy buttrock one, and that goes for the songwriting too in several places. It's a bit like the two songs "Midnight Mover" and "Screaming For a Love-Bite" found on the Accept album from the same year ('Metal Heart', 1985), with their Def Leppard-esque multi-layered-and-harmonized vocal choruses and Van Halen-esque poppy riffs and licks, but with the one exception that those two songs are pure classics and just fucking kick ass, and really no song on here even comes close to that level of quality. For the record, I'm just as much a fan of 80's buttrock as one of old-school heavy metal; it's just that Sinner doesn't sound nearly as comfortable straying into poppier territories as when done by Accept (probably the biggest influence on this band as one can expect; same country, same era and on this album even one of the guitarists is the same - not Wolf Hoffmann of course, but Hermann Frank, who played alongside him on 1982's 'Restless & Wild' and 1984's 'Balls to the Wall'). For one, Accept sure do it with a lot more energy, which is always a good thing with this type of music. Well now, even with a slightly corrupted spirit, there is still plenty of no-frills heavy metal power to gain here (it's 1985 dammit, kinda hard to go that much wrong), but as previously indicated, missing from here is that one totally killer, addictive cut that can make an entire album more memorable as whole. On 'Danger Zone' you had the opening title track serving just as that, but in case you're wondering, the opener on this album, "Born to Rock", certainly is NOT the answer to that. It's not even what you could consider a highlight, it just kinda plods along really. As for the best song, "Shout!" (as in "Shout at the Devil", really, the chorus is very similar) would be a good candidate, boasting a swift and energetic opening riff straight out of the Randy Rhoads school of kicking ass. Other above average cuts include a couple of solid crunch-groovers in "Out of Control" and "Hand of Fate", the energetic yet atmospheric and quite melodic "Emerald" and the all-out speed metal assault of "Too Late to Runaway" that would make UltraBoris ejaculate himself silly (maybe it already has, considering he liked the previous album so much - but if so, where's his review of this I wonder?). Plenty of solidity here, yes, but again, no real ungodly Metal Health (a.k.a. "Bang Your Head" by Quiet Riot, who are generally shit but certainly have a few classic songs under their belt) or Rock You to Motherfucking Hell (Grim Reaper) type of numbers to be found anywhere. In conclusion, nothing spectacular to see here folks, but I suppose if you really loved 'Danger Zone', there should be well enough here to keep you happy. However, let all you haters of Los Angeles Music be aware of stuff like the try-too-hard, balladic fluff of "The Storm Broke Loose" or the cheesy chorus of "Bad Girl" before purchase. The gigantic machine - built in Atlantis to defend the lost continent against its enemies, the so-called Alliance - still is mistaken. The computer-unit analysis identifies man as the destroyer of Atlantis. So it continues to carry out its prime directive: Protect Atlantis and conquer the Alliance. On earth only a few people managed to hide from the bloodhounds of the Savior in the former Earth-Defense-Headquarters (E.D.H.) underneath the everlasting ice of Greenland. The machine, from the very first moment of its arrival, was transmitting signals directly to the Atlantic Ocean, North Africa, South America, and the Easter Islands. This behavior led some people to the "theory of Atlantis". And in fact after major research for anything related to the old myth, some artifacts were found on the Azores and on the Easter Islands. The dig on the Easter Islands uncovered something like the entrance to an ancient structure of unknown purpose. Shielded and protected by force fields of unknown sources, the station couldn't be entered by anybody yet. But all of a sudden another transmission - similar to the Savior's transmission but yet different - was detected. Sensors indicated that the source must be located right in the heart of the ancient structure. The attempts to enter the station made the last Atlantian on earth awake from his 300,000 year long stasis sleep. Now the "Sleeper" is the last member alive of the Atlantian Iron Savior Defense program. But when he transmitted the secret codes to direct the controls of the Savior to his station, something unexpected happened. The computer unit refused to obey his command. It almost appeared to him, as if the unit is conscious - with a will of its own, just like an organic life form. The awakening of the sleeper and the contact with the last Atlantian on earth brought a lot of clarity and turned the "theory of Atlantis" into a hard fact. On the other hand, the situation did not change at all since the machine seems to disobey the orders of its creators. The only chance to fee mankind from the Savior is now awake to bio unit. But even this seems doubtful if the robot in deed developed a consciousness and now acts like a being with emotions and the hunger for power. It is very much likely that the computer will also disobey the orders of the bio unit. So the Savior needs to be defeated or destroyed, which at this time seems to be impossible. In this situation a big fleet of alien vessels enters the solar system. They have come from the distant planet of Calderis to investigate the transmission of the Iron Savior. The Calderins are the descendants of the Atlantian fugitives. Their forefathers left the dying civilization of Atlantis to find a new home in the vastness of space. But over the millennia they forgot about their origin and the Old World became a myth of legends and tales. But the Calderins never gave up the search although thousands of expeditions returned to Calderis without a clue. But this time they have reached their final destiny. Together with the sleeper mankind is unable to make contact and explain the fatal mistake of the Savior. So now with the unexpected help from the stars, earth will fight the final battle and it seems that the Savior can be defeated. ..::OPIS::.. After snatching up their previous three albums and seeing the band live, I felt like I could call myself a moderate Argus fan. The record that really sold me on the group was ‘Boldly Stride the Doomed’ as it came out as I was also discovering Revelation and Pale Divine. The main reason they initially appealed to me was because they’d been marketed as ex-Penance, though Balich was on the later-era stoner metal records from that band and they weren’t great. I was only interested in Penance because that band started as a post-Dream Death that emphasized doom metal over the thrashiness of that band’s debut. Argus’ self-titled debut and sophomore album were melodramatic doom influenced heavy metal that channeled the best of Candlemass with some of the aggression heard in early Grand Magus. They never went fully traditional doom but instead created some pretty top notch “epic heavy metal”. The third album was really the point where I kind of lost my love for Argus. There had been better doom albums by 2013 and when ‘Beyond the Martyrs’ came out it felt like a flat, kinda boring version of Solitude Aeternus or a very sad slow-motion Slough Feg. I wasn’t very enthusiastic for more Argus at all, so the four years between albums has been a bit of a relief as the band certainly didn’t change their style on ‘From Fields of Fire’. These old school metal folks are still one of the more polished bands to rise from the retro-doom fad. The singer has improved a great deal and his prominence here shows a great deal of inspiration. Balich’s album with original Fates Warning guitarist Victor Arduini earlier this year must have served as inspiration here, as his voice has never sounded more majestic and capable. He is restrained for the sake of the guitar’s power, and when he does belt it out he is more carefully cheese-indulgent. With far less howling than before, my attention focused on the lead guitar work which is a quasi-return to the style of the first album. While I was disappointed by the bass guitars resignation to the background, Argus hasn’t lost that epic, almost power metal feeling. ‘From Fields of Fire’ offers a real redemption for the band after the relatively flat previous album and I’m happy they’re on the right track here. I won’t say Argus have returned as one of my favorite doom metal related bands, but this is a fantastic album. Draped in a warm, crystalline production job, “From Fields Of Fire” is kicked off by the unchy and stout “Devils Of Your Time”. “As A Thousand Thieves” sees the band going full gallop, evoking the glory days of IRON MAIDEN, while the dueling twin-guitar harmonies on “216” captures the instant chemistry between Mucio and Watson. Elsewhere, the pounding “You Are The Curse”; soaring “Infinite Lives, Infinite Doors” and nimble “Hour Of Longing” offer up a degree of range and diversity emblematic of a band who has long come into its own as songwriters. However, “From Fields Of Fire’s undisputed highlight is the somber “No Right To Grieve”. Perhaps the band’s darkest song to date, “No Right To Grieve” was born out of a song Balich and Watson thought would be better served in a joint project outside of ARGUS. ..::OPIS::.. Nothing drives me more insane than when a mediocre band/artist records a legitimately brilliant album which is subsequently either ignored, laughed off as an anomaly, or ridiculed. Now I know there are TRUE Faithful Breath fans out there who love the band from their humble German prog/hard rock beginnings way back in 1974 with their debut "Fading Beauty" LP, and through their succession of albums(each a bit harder edged than the last, with the original prog sound gradually fading away) like 1980's "Back On My Hill", the cult hard rock classics "Rock Lions" LP from 1981 and "Hard Breath" LP from 1983(which were beginning to demonstrate some heavy metal proficiency but still had more of a hard rock vibe). In some ways Faithful Breath's development is similar to that of Krokus, with a long series of ok albums all leading to two classics(in the case of Krokus, their '82 "One Vice At A Time" LP and "Headhunter" LP from '83). Likewise, Faithful Breath's early efforts were all leading to the stunning European metal glory of their "Gold 'N' Glory" LP released in early 1984 on Mausoleum Records. But here's where things get tragic in my opinion. By 1984, too many metalheads had been negatively influenced by the early Faithful Breath LPs(for example, just imagine a young metalhead in 1983 buying '74's "Fading Beauty" LP-they'd be thoroughly confused when their friend told him a year later that he should check out this rad record by Faithful Breath called "Gold 'N' Glory") and the over the top Spinal Tap-esque image(see the back side of "Gold 'N' Glory" which Faithful Breath in full Viking regalia so proudly adorned). In many ways Sweden's Heavy Load also had this issue of an image which was either loved or hated(although almost NO ONE could deny their metal mastery). For some odd reason Manowar got a free pass for their equally cheeky dress, with many metal fans adoring Manowar's image while scorning Faithful Breath and Heavy Load who both PRECEDED Manowar when it came to dressing up like Vikings, etc. So basically, "Gold 'N' Glory" already had some strikes against it(no thanks to rock/metal critics as well) before the needle even dropped... When that needle DID drop however, what listerers were met with was a well-produced(by Accept producer/engineer Michael Wagener and Accept frontman Udo Dirkschneider)wall of hugely melodic, expertly played, well-written European heavy metal that musically was in the vein of Accept, Sinner, Trance, Bullet, Viva, Black Out-"Evil Game" LP and fellow label-mates Axe Victims, Ostrogoth(Belgium), Scavenger(Belgium), crossed with the cold, emotionally bleak and icy vibrations of Swedish masters like Heavy Load, Overdrive, Glory Bells' Band, 220 Volt, Torch, Axewitch, etc. So while "Gold 'N' Glory" IS a very German record it transcends borders and stands as a testament to the sheer heavy metal power and glory of 80's Euro-metal. From the first second, "Gold 'N' Glory" just piledrives with huge riffs, killer melodies, catchy choruses, and metal pride. Opening track "Don't Feel Hate" is superb and perfectly sets the stage for rest of the album which ranges from up-tempo headbangs like "Don't Feel Hate" to wonderfully written, slow, melodic masterpieces like "A Million Hearts". The second tune "King Of The Rock"(while lyrically not exactly brilliant) is a all-around monster of a track, with huge Accept-like group choruses and tons of excellent guitar work. Track three "Jailbreaker" is just plain old fun, evoking a time and style of heavy metal which is sadly now gone. This headbangin' tune is followed up by the brilliantly beautiful "A Million Hearts". Some would classify this tune as a "power ballad", but in reality it's FAR too heavy to have the word "ballad" anywhere near it! It is simply a emotionally crushing, melodic dirge, with a beautifully sung chorus and very emotive guitars. This tune is very reminiscent of some of the emotionally black, introspective, and brilliant tunes written by Swedish legends like 220 Volt and Heavy Load. Next up is the title track "Gold 'N' Glory" which is quite simply classic and starts Side B with the same shot of power that "Don't Feel Hate" does for Side A. The first time I heard this album, after "A Million Hearts"(the last song on Side A) I thought, "there's NO way that Side B can keep up this level of quality". In fact, over the years I've grown to love Side B just a hair more than the album's marvellous first side. The super-heavy, yet catchy, Accept-level quality title track is followed by "Play The Game", possibly my favorite tune on the LP, with its great melodic leads, upbeat(lyrically and musically) chorus, and down and dirty soloing which builds to a beautiful dual-guitar climax, followed by one more go around of the chorus. Next up is the menacing-mooded "Princess In Disguise" which features more top-notch guitar work and yet another great chorus. There is also a really cool effect placed on the vocals during the verses which sdds alot of moodiness to the track. The lead break on this tune is rad, almost spacey(maybe a hint of their early prog days), and once again it's just a fun, cool tune. The album ends with the up-tempo headbang "Don't Drive Me Mad" which is probably the weakest(but still great) tune on the album(as well as one of the heaviest and fastest)so serves as a good choice to end the album. There's this perfect sense of 'I wish there was more' which I get everytime this album ends. I usually end up playing it again. So basically, "Gold "N' Glory" is a lost classic of European metal and an undeniable piece of classic Germanic heavy metal. Every tune is great, the album cover is cool(further reinforcing the Nordic vibe which is SO in your face on the back of the LP which features photos of the band, several members dressed in full Viking gear). Yet, Faithful Breath carries a very love 'em or hate 'em kinda vibe which is unfortunate because I don't love Faithful Breath, however, I love the hell outta "Gold 'N' Glory"(and to a certain extent its 1985 follow-up "Skol" LP)!!! So if you're a fan of classic European metal, 80's German metal, proto-power metal, etc., and have not heard "Gold 'N' Glory" you MUST add it to your list! If you've had a bad experience with F. Breath(bought one of their early LPs and didn't like it, etc.), just set that memory aside in your mind. Because "Gold 'N' Glory" is a shining gem of early 80's Euro-metal and it deserves far more respect. In the end you may consider F. ..::OPIS::.. Nothing drives me more insane than when a mediocre band/artist records a legitimately brilliant album which is subsequently either ignored, laughed off as an anomaly, or ridiculed. Now I know there are TRUE Faithful Breath fans out there who love the band from their humble German prog/hard rock beginnings way back in 1974 with their debut "Fading Beauty" LP, and through their succession of albums(each a bit harder edged than the last, with the original prog sound gradually fading away) like 1980's "Back On My Hill", the cult hard rock classics "Rock Lions" LP from 1981 and "Hard Breath" LP from 1983(which were beginning to demonstrate some heavy metal proficiency but still had more of a hard rock vibe). In some ways Faithful Breath's development is similar to that of Krokus, with a long series of ok albums all leading to two classics(in the case of Krokus, their '82 "One Vice At A Time" LP and "Headhunter" LP from '83). Likewise, Faithful Breath's early efforts were all leading to the stunning European metal glory of their "Gold 'N' Glory" LP released in early 1984 on Mausoleum Records. But here's where things get tragic in my opinion. Koncert został wyemitowany przez radio i wydany w minimalnym nakładzie na promocyjnym, dwupłytowym winylu wartym dzisiaj setki dolarów. Ten hiszpański, limitowany CD zawiera pełną, 63-minutową transmisję w niespotykanie czystej jakości dźwięku i z profesjonalnymi łączeniami pomiędzy utworami. Zespół był w doskonałej formie, zaś na bębnach grał nieodżałowany Clive Burr, który sam dawał Maidenom dodatkowe 20-30% doskonałości. Dodatkowo umieszczono dwa nagrania ("Sanctuary" i "Drifter") zarejestrowane w 1980 roku w londyńskim klubie Marquee, a wydane tylko na rzadkim, japońskim maxi "Live + One" (wraz z dobrze znanym "Phantom Of The Opera"). O ile mi wiadomo, te dwa nagrania nigdy nie ukazały się na oficjalnym CD! Evo had learned his trade in legendary droog band Major Accident, he then moved to London to join The Blood, with a spell drumming for the legendary Angelic Upstarts, before forming Warfare. A fresh and much needed shot in the arm for the UK metal scene of the mid-80s, Warfare signed to Neat Records for a series of highly influential and original LPs and EPs. In 1992 Evo called it a day, having played professionally since the age of 18, retiring from the music business completely. After a hiatus of more than a quarter of a century, Evo returned with ‘The Songbook Of Filth’, a 3CD collection featuring many special guests, but with an even more brutal and angry sound than before. Każdy członek był w czołówce swojego rzemiosła, zapewniając maksymalny efekt zarówno w studio, jak i na scenie. Pod wieloma względami "Beast From The East" czerpie korzyści z ich umiejętności, nadając muzyce poczucie celu i energii, które łatwo przyćmiły nagrania studyjne. ..::OPIS::.. Upon listening to this release, I was introduced to something that I have not been fortunate enough to witness in the flesh, Iron Savior playing live. I tend not to be a fan of live CDs, mostly because the effect of the live show is lost and what you essentially have are imperfect versions of the studio songs. Like with Freedom Call, this album is an exception and delivers something stellar, even without the added visuals. Piet's vocal performance on all 5 of the live tracks is excellent, as is Kai's on his compositional offering Watcher in the Sky. The guitar sound doesn't drown out the drums and bass, and the solos are all perfectly present above the thundering rhythm section. The live rendition of "For the World" is actually even better than the studio version, containing a bit more intensity in the vocals on Piet's part. "Rinding on Fire" maintains most of it's power, although I did miss the acoustic guitar sound that was present during the interlude of the album version. "Brave New World" is on par with it's studio version, although the vocal interchange between Piet and Kai during the bridge is a nice touch. "Iron Savior" functions perfectly as the opening track of the live half of the album, as it embodies the spirit of the band and is a nice middle ground between their up-tempo cookers and their occasional slow heavy tracks. In addition to the live offerings, we are also treats to 4 new original tracks by the band. These songs function as a bridge in the story concept of the second album (Unification) and the third (Dark Assault). The story itself is loaded with intrigue, introducing a race of aliens that pray upon others and who have far advanced technology (similar to Independence Day), and the songs play off the situations in this story quite well. "Contortions of Time" is a dark, yet catchy track that introduces us to this savage alien race the same way Judas Priest would during the Painkiller era, with blazing speed. "Touching the Rainbow" is a more anthem-like track, giving a sense of hope within what appears to be a hopeless situation, highlighted with a powerful chorus and some crazy solos traded off between Piet and Kai. "Stone Cold" is a gloomy slower track, topped off with a rather somber bluesy intro, telling the story of a doomed ship and a captain contemplating his own death. "Hatchet of War" is another anthem, but with a more epic set of tempo changes, where the human race and their allies declare their resistence to the threat. Track 10 is a cover of Judas Priest's Desert Plains, and is pretty much par for the course in terms of their regular hommages to the band that most influenced them. I saw a special on VH1 not long ago where Judas Priest was being paid tribute by Godsmack, and compared to the covers that Savior has put forth, they were as medicore as they come. But unfortunately America isn't offering many great metal bands these days. In conclusion, this album is the best of both worlds, a great collection of live performances mixed together with a rather intense mini-story concept album that contains the missing link between Iron Savior's 2 greatest studio albums. ..::OPIS::.. Kwintesencja grania NWOBHM! Wydany na poczatku 1983 roku rewelacyjny album "Power Games" był przez kilka miesięcy (aż do czasu pojawienia się "Kill 'Em All" Metalliki) najszybszym i najbardziej dynamicznym, metalowym graniem na świecie. Dodatkowo dołączono sześć fantastycznych bonusów z wczesnych singli i z rzadkich winylowych kompilacji z lat 1981-1982. Moim zdaniem te dodatki (a zwłaszcza Axe Crazy i Back Street Woman) są jeszcze lepsze niż i tak kapitalny album. Świetne brzmienie i bardzo gustowna szata graficzna z reprodukcjami wszystkich okładek singli i kompilacji. Ta płyta ze szkaradną rysunkową okładką to wzorzec na to, jak zawrzeć w swojej muzyce nieposkromioną energię i radość z życia. Brytyjczycy proponują kapitalnie odegrany heavy metal, z piorunującymi skroń riffami i charyzmatycznymi wokalizami Paula Merella. Nie mogę oczywiście wspomnieć o kompozycji Axe Crazy - jednej z najlepszych w całej historii nurtu NWOBHM, która stała się dla niego niczym Raining Blood dla thrashu. Poza tym są tu jeszcze petardy pokroju Coldheart ze znakomitymi partiami wokalnymi, rozwalającego refrenami Dutch Connection czy masakrującego witalnymi riffami Prisoner. Ogólnie przesłuchanie takiej płyty rano jest jak gorący rosołek na niedzielnego kaca. Nucleator “…where the lands as flat as the booze and I love your shoes…” Power Games often gets stuck on the ‘bad rap’ end of the stick and this is something I’m continually puzzled by. Okay, okay, their lyrics are known to take death-defying leaps into the great spittoon of expressiveness, but it’s my opinion that this lonely, albeit important quality is overshadowed by the album’s headlong romp into metal zeal, heavy-handed only in its power cell which siphons energy from the same unfailing source tapped by Raven at the cusp of ‘80/’81, and should be at the kill site licking its paws alongside Forged in Fire, Fire in the Brain, Heavy Metal Maniac, and a dozen or so others. Y’see, in my book ’83 wasn’t a warm-up period for metal, but its heat-up period, and the terrain was just starting to turn molten. Force capacitors were inching closer to the hairier numbers on the heaviness dial, and while many bands lay there limply like garden hoses left out in the sun (see: Wildfire, Jade, Pandemonium) and thought they were doing something special, there were some that heard, and more importantly, understood the style’s shape-shifting call to arms. But Jaguar had already wailed a battle cry with the previous year’s “Axe Crazy” single, a track that wouldn’t charge into combat on this lp (or, for some reason, any other), but would spiral through history as an ‘82 top power monger to those who heard it. These up n’ comers looked ahead as well, with pupils bigger than a feline’s and, heh, with really no stealth whatsoever, but shit, with a Chris Lovell quote like “Energy and excitement, we’re not slow and doomy. We just crank it up, press down the gas and lay on the speed, speed, and more speed!!!” headlining their original bio…well, it really would’ve sucked if they sounded like Whitesnake. Or Sheriff. With nary a hint of gushy filling, Power Games is a heat-seeking punch from tumultuous starter “Dutch Connection” to finale “Coldheart”, freshly-wrought with high altitude attitude and the original swear n’ swagger that really got the British movement going. While Paul Merrell isn’t a master of range, his utterly uncluttered single octave is all that brawlers like “The Fox”, “Run For Your Life”, “Prisoner” and “Dutch Connection” need to nudge them over the jagged edge, and it’s an edge that wouldn’t exist without the strong arm core of Cox, Pepperd, and Lovell pounding on it as if laid on an anvil. Really, the power level of this album is hard to ignore, and a song like “Master Game”, with its mellow-moment Scorpions (with Merrell sounding more than a bit like Klaus, and sounding fine doing it)-meets-a barrage of loud ascending/descending power strokes and one helluva voltaic solo, shoots the sonic level home with all kinds of colors flying. Then there’s “No Lies”. If you feel like you’ve heard this song before, it’s probably because it rolls firmly in a Twisted Sister/“Tear it Loose” train of structure – frantically-paced and word n’ chorus-driven - and after a quick hike through a forest of past song anatomies, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels as well. Unfortunately, there’s one speed bump. Yeah, second from last song, “Rawdeal”, is the lp’s closest flub – slow to start, AC/DC-ish in its lackluster midsection, kinda everyday with a two-pitch guitar riff and near single lane movement – but if it’s the rawest deal on this ride, then we’re lookin’ damn spiffy. Power Games is rowdy, rampant, and aggressive, yet tight, coordinated, and semi-polished. Okay, so maybe the foursome aren’t the least bit sleek or cat-like as they stalk metal’s open field and maybe they’re not at the tippy top of the year’s food chain, but they certainly weren’t prey, at least not for many. And you can hear the friggin’ bass! “…the memories are scattered, like ashes on the floor. The flames once danced for you, but you’re not the master anymore…” Gutterscream ..::TRACK-LIST::.. 1. Y’see, in my book ’83 wasn’t a warm-up period for metal, but its heat-up period, and the terrain was just starting to turn molten. Force capacitors were inching closer to the hairier numbers on the heaviness dial, and while many bands lay there limply like garden hoses left out in the sun (see: Wildfire, Jade, Pandemonium) and thought they were doing something special, there were some that heard, and more importantly, understood the style’s shape-shifting call to arms. But Jaguar had already wailed a battle cry with the previous year’s “Axe Crazy” single, a track that wouldn’t charge into combat on this lp (or, for some reason, any other), but would spiral through history as an ‘82 top power monger to those who heard it. These up n’ comers looked ahead as well, with pupils bigger than a feline’s and, heh, with really no stealth whatsoever, but shit, with a Chris Lovell quote like “Energy and excitement, we’re not slow and doomy. We just crank it up, press down the gas and lay on the speed, speed, and more speed!!!” headlining their original bio…well, it really would’ve sucked if they sounded like Whitesnake. Or Sheriff. With nary a hint of gushy filling, Power Games is a heat-seeking punch from tumultuous starter “Dutch Connection” to finale “Coldheart”, freshly-wrought with high altitude attitude and the original swear n’ swagger that really got the British movement going. While Paul Merrell isn’t a master of range, his utterly uncluttered single octave is all that brawlers like “The Fox”, “Run For Your Life”, “Prisoner” and “Dutch Connection” need to nudge them over the jagged edge, and it’s an edge that wouldn’t exist without the strong arm core of Cox, Pepperd, and Lovell pounding on it as if laid on an anvil. Really, the power level of this album is hard to ignore, and a song like “Master Game”, with its mellow-moment Scorpions (with Merrell sounding more than a bit like Klaus, and sounding fine doing it)-meets-a barrage of loud ascending/descending power strokes and one helluva voltaic solo, shoots the sonic level home with all kinds of colors flying. Then there’s “No Lies”. If you feel like you’ve heard this song before, it’s probably because it rolls firmly in a Twisted Sister/“Tear it Loose” train of structure – frantically-paced and word n’ chorus-driven - and after a quick hike through a forest of past song anatomies, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels as well. Unfortunately, there’s one speed bump. Yeah, second from last song, “Rawdeal”, is the lp’s closest flub – slow to start, AC/DC-ish in its lackluster midsection, kinda everyday with a two-pitch guitar riff and near single lane movement – but if it’s the rawest deal on this ride, then we’re lookin’ damn spiffy. Power Games is rowdy, rampant, and aggressive, yet tight, coordinated, and semi-polished. Okay, so maybe the foursome aren’t the least bit sleek or cat-like as they stalk metal’s open field and maybe they’re not at the tippy top of the year’s food chain, but they certainly weren’t prey, at least not for many. ...( Opis )... This really is a pleasant surprise. Sometimes with an album, the combination of songs, energy and production make it stand out in a CD collection. Well, that is exactly what has happened with 'Danger Zone'. The style of the album is straight ahead early/mid 80s metal with a heavy dose of Judas Priest combined with the NWOBHM grit of early Saxon. The energy of Danger Zone is so infectious; you can tell the guys in the band were very young at the time it was recorded. The first song, and title track, "Danger Zone" reveals Mat Sinners love of Thin Lizzy with some excellent harmonized guitar passages and a catchy chorus. Mat's voice is raw and it fits very well with the style of music that Sinner play. "Scene of the Crime" is a fast paced monster with another chorus that you will be singing for days and "Lupo Manaro" slows things down with some mid-tempo no nonsense head banging material. Another neck snapper "Wild Things" rears its head near the end of the album. The songwriting does leave a bit to be desired in places and sometimes the band does tread the same ground in different songs, but the album does flow well from start to finish. The production of the album is very good, to my ears. The drum sound is almost identical to Dave Hollands on Judas Priest's 'Defenders of the Faith' and has a slightly mechanical feel to them. The guitars though, are far ballsier here and sit nicely in the mix with plenty of mid crunch. In fact, this album has one of my preferred hard rock/heavy metal guitar sounds from the 80s era. A fine example of this is in the intro of Lupo Manaro. This is the perfect album when you have had a few beers, just want to turn your stereo up loudly and enjoy no frills hard rock/ heavy metal. I would take this album over just about any other for that. It should not really be judged by each song on its own merits, rather as a whole. It has the feel of a live performance and does what 80s metal should. It makes you feel alive! It is a shame that as the 80s progressed, Sinner adopted a more commercial American influenced sound that didn't really suit the band.
