Dr. Know's discography with Cruz expands and so does my disdain for the Cruz incarnation. Father, Son, and Holy Shit! lowered my expectation of quality output while Killing for God only confirmed the worst. Cruz's Habily (What Was Old Is New) is one of my favorite records period, though, so my problem with Killing for God isn't a vendetta against Cruz..yet. (Worth nothing: previous Dr. Know singer and guitarist Kyle seems to have written most of the songs that appear on Habily, so perhaps that is why that record is so good..) It's the loss of nardcore identity and out-of-touch riff salad present throughout this entire album, to the point where incoherent noise feels favored over song structure.

Where to begin? There's a lot to talk about, mostly negative. Where bands like Discharge can execute noise-over-music perfectly, Killing for God is a hot mess. The traces of punk or metal found here are dead on arrival, composed of nauseatingly repetitive garbage playing. Two and three minute songs on average made of riffs only worth five seconds of your time. It’s a disingenuous replication of punk’s simplistic approach, the only problem is Dr. Know forgot to make the songs enjoyable too. None of the riffs here catch my attention and every time I listen to this album I seem to forget more about it..maybe if I play it again, I can forget this mistake exists. But I don't know if I want to endure this album once more.

There's not a lot to say about the production, it's generic. So generic that I can only applaud them for making the bass moderately stand out in the mix. Hooray..? Meanwhile the weak and childish lyrics only serve to further poison the already dismal experience. The delivery itself is good. Cruz is a good singer for the genre he's in. My problem are the lyrics themselves. I’m not sure who wrote what on this album but they should retire the pen.

Had this band approached this album with the intention of producing breakneck 30 - 60 second "blipcore" tracks, it would have been much, much better. To stretch out repetitive riffs that aren’t even fit to wipe my ass with? That’s boring.
