Call of Duty: World at War jest kolejną częścią serii popularnych pierwszoosobowych strzelanin. W poprzednich grach z tego cyklu (za wyjątkiem Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) mieliśmy okazję zwiedzić normandzkie wsie i miasteczka, zasmakować życia czerwonoarmisty podczas walk o Stalingrad czy poczuć prażące słońce północnoafrykańskiej pustyni. W części piątej autorzy zmieniają teatry działań i przenoszą gracza w wilgotny klimat azjatyckiej dżungli oraz na front wschodni tuż przed zakończeniem wojny. W pierwszym przypadku po jednej stronie znajdują się żołnierze amerykańscy i australijscy, po drugiej fanatycznie oddani Cesarzowi żołnierze japońscy.
