..::OPIS::..
When it comes to the evolution of Extreme Metal and Progressive Metal, 1994’s “Tales From The Thousand Lakes” album by Amorphis is one of the most important and influential metal albums ever released. When first released there was nothing quite like it and it was a radical departure from the band’s debut album “The Karelian Isthmus” which was a straightforward Death Metal album. “Tales From The Thousand Lakes” saw the band incorporate melody, progressive song structures, clean vocals and influences from classic rock, psychedelic rock and Finnish Folk music and mixed into their Death Metal sound.
To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of this seminal album, Amorphis are releasing “Tales From The Thousand Lakes (Live At Tavastia)” which sees the band perform the entire album from start to finish at the Tavastia Club in Helsinki. This was the same location as last year’s “Queen Of Time (Live At Tavastia)” live album and much like the previous release, it was filmed and recorded with no audience. It is almost a throwback to the live streams bands put out during the covid restrictions and back to a time I have absolutely no desire to revisit. A good live album is the union between the band and the crowd with each party feeding off the energy and enthusiasm of the other so Amorphis playing in an empty club does lack a live album, feeling no different to if it had been recorded live in a studio.
Aside from its shortcomings as a live album, the performances from the band are absolutely flawless and really showcase what a jaw dropping live act that Amorphis are. The band are a fine-tuned unit and the musical chemistry between the six members of the band is absolutely electric. The vocals from Tomi Joutsen are as spectacular as ever from his fearsome growls to his stunning cleans vocals though the growls take precedent on this release with this being early Amorphis material performed. The production and mix of these live recordings is stunning as well and sound infinitely better than the original studio recordings from 1994 (though they definitely have their charm as well). “Tales From The Thousand Lakes” is performed in full from start to finish but we also get a couple of extra songs – ‘Vulgar Necrolatry’ from the debut album (which is a cover of Abhorrence, a Finnish Death Metal band that featured Amorphis guitarist Tomi Koivusaari in their ranks) and the Amorphis set staple ‘My Kantele’ from the follow up album “Elegy”.
“Tales From The Thousand Lakes: Live At Tavastia” is a fitting homage to one of the most important albums in both Amorphis and Finnish metal history. The performances are fantastic, it sounds amazing and it also looks fantastic if you have the DVD or Bluray but it does just lack an enthusiastic audience of die-hard Amorphis fans cheering and singing along to these songs.
