Półtora roku po wydaniu debiutanckiego “Leprous Daylight”, brazylijscy gruzownicy powracają z drugim albumem. Po raz kolejny mamy tutaj około trzydziestu pięciu minut samego gęstego w najlepszym wydaniu. Trochę nie rozumiem malkontentów narzekających na wspomniany debiut, głównie w zestawieniu z wcześniejszą EP-ką. Moim zdaniem była to w prostej linii, niczym nie ustępująca najwcześniejszym nagraniom, kontynuacja i rozwijanie własnego stylu. Podobnie rzecz ma się z „Advent of Wounds”. To cały czas ten sam odłam śmierć metalu, z niewielkim jedynie przemieszaniem poszczególnych części składowych. Analizowanie tych nagrań w stosunku jeden do jednego, czy aptekarska analiza, mija się z celem i byłaby klasycznym mierzeniem zawartości cukru w cukrze. Ilość gruzy w nagraniach Fossilization jest na tyle wysoka, że nie jestem się w stanie spod niej odkopać. Nie powiem przy okazji nic odkrywczego. Bo w rzeczy samej, Brazylijczycy grają muzykę opartą na wspaniałych wzorcach wspaniałych zespołów. Po co analizować, czy więcej tu tym razem Phobocosm niż Immolation, czy może tym razem panowie zapatrzyli się mocniej w Dead Congregation, sporo harmonie kojarzące się z tymi zespołami i tak są do siebie podobne, a jednak każdy z nich nieco się od siebie różni. Tak samo jak Fissilization, którzy mieszając ciężar z melodią, przeplatając fragmenty blastujące miażdżącymi zwolnieniami, raz uderzając bezpośrednim riffem, by za chwilę zahipnotyzować zapętlonym motywem, stworzyli również coś własnego. Coś, co możemy śmiało postawić w jednym szeregu ze wspomnianymi przed chwilą klasykami. W tych nagraniach jest tyle mrocznego klimatu, tyle odoru pleśni i zgnilizny, tyle mocarnych harmonii, że nie da się zaprzeczyć, iż jest to najwyższy poziom rozgrywek. Ktoś powie, że brzmienie jest nieco przymulone? No bo jest, ale akurat dla mnie to zaleta a nie wada, bo to nie jest, do cholery, szpital! Że wokal monotonny? Wspaniale. Brzmi przez to jak dobiegający z krypty charkot ghoula, idealnie wpisując się w całość. Moim zdaniem Brazylijczycy nagrali najlepszy do tej pory materiał, a że odsłuchałem go już kilkanaście razy, i nabrałem dystansu, to będę się przy swojej opinii upierał. Premiera jakoś za miesiąc, czyli już za momencik. Zaznaczcie sobie jej dzień w kalendarzy, żeby czasem nie przeoczyć.

Bleak, crushing and claustrophobic, "Advent of Wounds" is a summoning of despair that drags the listener into a chasm where brutality and anguish entwine. A suffocating testament to extremity that confirms Fossilization as one of the most formidable forces in contemporary death metal!

- “Advent of Wounds” began taking shape right after our tour with Father Befouled in late 2024. I knew I’d have to rethink my approach to songwriting, especially after years of writing with Paulo’s drumming style in mind. Life took us in different directions, so I opened myself up to new ideas and let that guide the creation of these tracks.
From the start, my goal was to make an album even more brutal than Leprous Daylight, from sheer death metal brutality to the miserable melancholy of the doom-laden spirit of early Anathema, Paradise Lost, and early Katatonia. You can also hear many of black metal influences across the record, the opening riff of ‘Disentombed and Reassembled by the Ages’ is a direct nod to one of my all-time favorite bands, Antaeus.
This time, I also wanted a new direction in the mix and master, so we worked with Gabriele Gramaglia (Cosmic Putrefaction, Turris Eburnea, Vertebra Atlantis). We also had Justin Stubbs (Father Befouled, Encoffination) appear on “Scalded by His Sacred Halo.” And, for the first time, the artwork features a painting instead of an illustration, created by the incredible Guang Yang.” - (V.)

Fossilization is a brazilian death metal band formed in 2020, a duo featuring members of the sludge/death/doom metal band Jupiterian, V. (voices, guitars, bass) and P. (drums).

Brazilian doomed death metallers Fossilization are back with their second album. Out via Everlasting Spew Records on February 13th.

Convulsive guitars and hammering drums spew into existence with no introduction nor warning. This is death metal ferocity that does not waste time. Guttural vocals add their spectral incantations atop the waves of visceral instruments for maximum extremity with a lurking, monolithic and charnel atmosphere enveloping the entirety of the band. Flaring dissonance contrasts the meaty hooks of slow, lumbering riffs and continues to add dynamics to the barbaric music; giving a strong first impression. Having really enjoyed the band’s body of work thus far, I have a lot of expectations from this record and I am curious to see if their streak of savagery will continue to appease my ravenous appetite for quality underground metal or will they drop the ball? From the blend of tremolo picking and blast-beats to the more creepy sections to full on hammering primitive violence; there are all of the hallmarks of some crushing death metal and the consistency of everyone’s performance is undeniable. This is a band who have spent a lot of time touring, released enough music and played together enough to hone their sound into what they envision. Certainly a ferocious first impression for “Advent of Wounds”.

Scalding sepulchral death metal continues to erupt with that fantastically executed blend of extremity and atmosphere while both sides of the coin hold the eldritch spirits in high regard and ensures no section loses its impact. Those more doomy moments give a strong juxtaposition to the blasting sections and yet feel no less intense, offering a sense of dread to the juggernaut of morbidity that the album is building. Fossilization are always pumping forth a maelstrom of tension and aggression that seems to change on a very precise basis to give a sense of volatility to the music while never being haphazard in doing so. The way a riff will jump into a spasming pattern further fuels the furnaces of disquiet that the record comfortably plays with. Definitely continuing from its predecessor, the blend of gloom, malice and eeriness is superbly balanced to concoct a fetid brew of death metal that will certainly appeal to most subterranean metal fans. Fossilization have built quite a name for themselves and earned a loyal underground following their their EP, split and debut LP; something I can see continuing to grow with this album and their equally noteworthy efforts taking their music on the road.

Another monolith of decaying death metal from Fossilization. Continuing to harness rabid fury, ghostly doom and moments of unwieldy tension; this is a fearsome offering indeed. Consuming all in their inferno of darkness, the void of macabre music will swallow you once opened and the relatively short but certainly not lacking record will have you possessed for its duration. Pre-existing fans will certainly enjoy this new opus and newcomers will likely find a death metal band that grips them. With exciting pacing, extremely tight musicianship and a deathlike atmosphere from start to end; “Advent of Wounds” is another triumph from this Brazilian outfit. Walking in the footsteps of Dead Congregation, Cruciamentum and the like but with a flare of their own; this duo continues to conquer.
