Film oparty na opowiadaniu Stephena Kinga o tym samym tytule. Pisarz Mike Enslin (John Cusack) jest autorem dwóch książek dotyczących zjawisk paranormalnych. Aby zdobyć materiały do nowej książki, Mike jest zdecydowany zbadać cieszący się złą sławą pokój 1408 w nowojorskim hotelu. Jest on jednak przekonany, że opowieści dotyczące owego pokoju to tylko mit. Dyrektor hotelu pan Olin (Samuel L. Jackson) nie podziela podejścia pisarza i ostrzega go o możliwym niebezpieczeństwie. Enslin zamierza udowodnić, że przerażające wydarzenia, które miały tam miejsce w przeszłości to tylko zwykłe zbiegi okoliczności i bajki.
