Canada’s abyssal blackened death metallers Ceremonial Bloodbath return with their second album. As a huge fan of their previous works, I await this with bated breath.

After a moment of foreboding introduction we dive headlong into unfettered bestial hellfire. Malicious riffing and scornful drums besiege while the daunting layered vocals feel equally hostile, the entire band working as a rampant unit to deliver pure barbarity. The way in which this record launches into vitriolic extremity and retains the energetic delivery is impressive enough, but Ceremonial Bloodbath does more than just your run of the mill war metal. Those who heard their debut will know there is a strong atmospheric and dissonant angle to their music which can even be, dare I say it, progressive. By no means do they dull the blade of ferocity, but their menacing music certainly has more than one trick up its sleeve. Cavernous soundscapes of decaying life reverberate while the hammering force is never far away to begin bludgeoning us once again. Few acts of this style feel quite as feral and yet unique as these (Black Curse being a highlight for me). Indeed it seems the return of this Canadian entity is a triumphant one based on the first glimpses of this album.

Blow after devastating blow of sonic upheaval continually rains upon you as the unfurling torment grows in primal furore. The dirge and scourge of true bestial black death metal with genuinely bold spirit and tangible aggression ensures every second grips you with its tendrils of vengeance, coating all moments in this thick and indomitable production to guarantee maximum obliteration. While raw and energetic, there is also a refinement and panache to this record that continues in the invigorated vein of its predecessor, something I am most grateful of. Ecstatic malevolence continues to reign throughout the body of this evil work, showing no signs of lessening their demonic intensity from the rapturous riffing, razoring solos or untamed drums all the way through to the pummelling bass and maniacal vocals. There is no weak link in this chain, prepare to be bound for its entirety.

Although utterly crazed, there is a subtly ritualistic feeling to the percussive and rhythmic side amidst all of the animalistic battery. While rabid and ruthless, it can also be a hypnotic listen in certain moments which is fascinating as a listener of this style who seldom finds such descriptions apt. The rolling waves of decimating morbidity continue to crash upon the ears in an unmistakably disquieting fashion. All the way until its explosive climax, “Genesis of Malignant Entropy” retains your attention and affections with its violent storms of metallic convulsions. A band so bestial who do not rely on derivative cliches and recycled aesthetics is to be commended, and Ceremonial Bloodbath are one of few I would put forth as truly worth engaging with. Do not delay, fall victims to this merciless onslaught at your closest opportunity for an orgiastic array of sonic slaughter.

The sophomore album of Ceremonial Bloodbath is another dizzying barrage of furious black / death metal, bestial and malignant with atmosphere and exploration in abundance. If you seek truly visceral and daunting music that will dominate your psyche with pure chaos, then look no further. This opus is not for the weak of heart, but the strong of will. Another resplendently abominable record from one of the finest in this particular corner of extremity that shows no signs of faltering.
