Dla mnie BOMBA!!!

With the release of their sixth album, Lord Vigo has fulfilled their evolution from an epic doom band to full-on goth rock. Hell, I’m not sure how much metal is even left on Walk The Shadows; tracks like “Through A Glass Darkly” and “We Shall Not” likely wouldn’t have been too out of place on 2022’s We Shall Overcome for their jubilant guitar leads on top of pulsating rhythms and deeper vocals, but those upbeat sensibilities are much closer to the Sisters of Mercy playbook than Iron Maiden or Candlemass.
One could raise concerns about how well the band ends up weathering this change, but I’m not sure if their core traits have ever sounded so suited to a given style as they do here. Their vocals and bass playing have always been their most distinct traits and both are served quite here, the former getting some enthusiastic hooks while the latter provides some catchy grooves alongside a prominent backbone. It’s also cool to see them taking even better advantage of their echoing production with the abundance of synths, leads, and samples feeling balanced while the propulsive beats make one not miss the heavier guitar work too badly.
I can also appreciate how the songwriting takes the previous album’s anthemic spirit and puts it toward a more easygoing set of tracks. It’s admittedly for things to run together when the songs generally aim to be danceable and upbeat with the occasional heavy flourish, but it’s really hard to complain when the choruses on songs like “Killing Hearts and Endless Nights” and “Servants of the Dark” are so enthusiastic. There’s a chance of the especially atmospherically-driven “El Hakim” getting a little too lost in the sauce but I also like how it gradually shifts between its movements while keeping a hypnotic vibe across twelve minutes.
Considering the current crop of bands that hybridize or toe the lines between heavy metal and goth rock, I can appreciate Lord Vigo taking the full plunge into the latter with Walk The Shadows. Whether it ends up being a one-off or the way forward to another trajectory, the style comes quite naturally to the band, bringing out the best in their playing even when it’s not as overtly heavy and the songs are among the most engaging they’ve come up with. We Shall Overcome or 2020’s Danse de Noir may still be their most balanced entry points for unfamiliar listeners, but this makes for a satisfying culmination.
