Z nową propozycją przybił do naszych brzegów szwedzki Ereb Altor. Za pasami topory, twarze skryte za gęstą brodą, w dłoniach dzielnie dzierżą rogi wypełnione miodem pitnym czy co tam Wikingowie piją. A z głośników – oczywiście – viking metal.

Bo muzycy Ereb Altor wychodzą z założenia, że jak palić, rabować i gwałcić obce landy to tylko przy dźwiękach Bathory lub jego wiernych naśladowców. Sami też podążają ścieżką wyznaczoną przez Quorthona, nie zbaczając z niej ani na milimetr, przy czym zdarzają się im wycieczki w black metal i tu za przykład posłuży mi numer tytułowy. W ogóle jakby trochę więcej tu inspiracji w stylu wczesnego Enslaved niż na poprzednim krążku, ale wciąż nie ma tego wiele. Przeważająca część „Nattramn” to klasyczne granie pod tę jedną, oczywistą inspirację. Gitary suną nam jak galera napędzana siłą mięśni, wzniosłe, czyste wokale ulatują ku niebu, na którym gromadzą się ciemne burzowe chmury. I gdy kapela postanawia grać trochę ciężej, mocniej to z tych chmur biją gromy. Prawda, że piękna wizja? Ano piękna, zwłaszcza jeśli jest się fanem viking metalu. Ja co prawda nie jestem, jakoś jednak ten Ereb Altor mnie nie odpycha. Z drugiej strony, nie wiem co mogę Wam jeszcze na temat tego albumu napisać. Przyznam, że poprzedniego już nie pamiętam, choć kojarzę, że mi się podobał i że grali viking metal. Coś czuję, że za rok to samo będę potrafił napisać o „Nattramn” i niewiele więcej.

Zasadniczo, swojego stosunku do Szwedów nie zmieniłem po odsłuchaniu ich piątej płyty – ani na plus ani na minus. Dobra muzyka. Viking metal.

Oracle


Ereb Altor is a Swedish band that was formed in 2003 by members of the epic doom metal outfit Forlorn (who have since switched their moniker to Isole). The band’s first albums were lauded for their seamless weaving of the Viking era of Bathory with traditional epic doom metal. With their third album, Gastrike, and it’s follow up, Fire Meets Ice, Ereb Altor abandoned the trappings of epic doom for a more black metal influenced sound. Despite retaining the epic nature of their first albums, many fans were put off with the new direction of the band.

Nattramn, the band’s fifth full length album, released at the end of April 2015, continues in the vein of the last two, focusing on merging their epic Viking metal with cold black metal atmospherics, but overall it seems to be a darker album than before. Bathory remains the band’s largest influence, which is quite evident with the adventurous pacing, crunchy riffs and frequent epic clean vocals. The album mixes between heavy handed segments of galloping riffs and crashing percussion, like “Dark Waters” and the closing track “The Nemesis of Frei” and more nuanced melodies driven forth by a wall of keyboard notes. It’s that essence of balance that makes this album work so well. Sure, the last album may have been called Fire Meets Ice, but Nattramn actually capitalizes on the phrase.

The clean vocal melodies sound stronger and more confident this time around and the harsh and raspy roars are more furious and raging. The band leans on the airy keyboard passages a little more than before, but it adds a more melodic flare to the slower passages. The majority of the album focuses on Quorthon inspired riffing, like the crunchy groove on “The Dance of the Elves”, which sounds like it came straight from Nordland I or the raging end of the title track, with its thick power chords and thundering percussion mixed with an airy keyboard backdrop that brings to mind Hammerheart. The previously mentioned black metal influences work their way in here and there, like the rampant trem riffing and blasts during “The Nemisis of Frei”, but the focus remains on Bathory-isms.

It’s pretty clear at this point that Ereb Altor isn’t keen to return to the sounds of the first two albums, but the music on Nattramn proves that the band is really blazing their own trail. Sure, it sounds like Bathory, but it comes through revelry and nostalgia rather than the blatant aping of Quorthon. Personally, I think the band is a little more potent without the traditional doom leanings. The meshing of epic Viking metal with clean vocals and harsher black metal histrionics with raspy growls is commendable. Fans of Ereb Altor’s past two album can revel in the fact that they finally seemed to have put all of the pieces together. Fans of Ereb Altor’s early work, hold your breath a little longer.
