...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI

..::OPIS::..

'Sphere of Adversity' jest ponadprzeciętnym osiągnięciem w równowadze emocjonalnie zaburzonej powagi i ostrych, serpentynowych rytmów doom metalu, rytmów, które służą każdemu utworowi jako indywidualny mikrokosmos.
...tak pokrótce. Miłego odbioru...

It’s been seven years since Acolytes of Moros graced us with 2018’s The Wellspring, but Sphere of Adversity makes up for any sense of lost time with an even more colossal slice of doom. Four tracks combined eclipse the eighty-minute threshold, the shortest being a little less than twelve minutes and two threatening to reach the half-hour mark. Comparisons to Reverend Bizarre have always been apparent since the Acolytes’ 2010 foundation so I suppose it’s only inevitable for them to put out their So Long, Suckers equivalent.

The atmosphere is in line with the previous album’s melancholic veneer, right down to the emphasis on plodding rhythms and melodramatic baritone vocals. but the longer form songwriting makes for an unsurprisingly meandering execution with some adjustments to the band dynamic. The bass leads the charge more often this time around, often setting the foundation and structure via drawn out rumbles that get built up courtesy of the hazy guitars and still fairly dexterous drums. The trio has strong chemistry, utilizing the sort of overall looseness that sets it in the lineage of early Sabbath as each instrument is often wandering around in its own segments of the space while playing into the greater picture.

Of course, it’s also pretty easy to get lost when the space is marked by such broad degrees. This is especially apparent with the two longest tracks as they include several fluctuating parts, sometimes presented with the sort of ambiguity that can make it tricky to tell whether a track has truly ended or is just gearing up for another segment. This is especially notable with the bass break toward of “Shadowlands” completely halting the momentum, but the title track does a noticeably better job of sequencing its different parts and even gets some extra pizzaz courtesy of the extra organ thrown into the mix during the climactic drone. I also can’t deny that the closing “Establish Dominance” is almost a reprieve from the previous exercises despite being about as slothful.

With Sphere of Adversity doubling down on doom extremity, Acolytes of Moros pushes an already acquainted taste to even further extents. The best of The Wellspring hits a little higher than much of this album’s material but the conviction is certainly admirable here as the musicianship goes a long way in making due on these promises of oppressive slow motion. It’s a lot to take in but is ultimately straightforward, ensuring the doom faithful appreciate its lengthy devotions but not turning everybody else off as bad as they could’ve.
