...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI
..::OPIS::..
Fantastyczny heavy metal z mnóstwem riffów, świetnymi solówkami i znakomitym wokalem!
Achelous has always been a pretty solid power metal band but something about their third full-length just seems more striking than their previous efforts. The mix of grandiose leads, furious rhythms, and soaring choruses evokes contemporaries like Sacred Outcry and Seven Sisters, but it also taps into an early aughts power metal mindset that feels hard to come by nowadays. I listen to Tower Of High Sorcery and it hits that nostalgic part of my brain occupied by the likes of Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Theocracy, and Jag Panzer (more on them later) among others.
As much as the instrumentation shines on this album, the vocals are majorly elevated compared to their earlier efforts with a couple guest singers getting to make their mark. “Into The Shadows” is an especially notable instance of this in action, featuring none other than The Tyrant providing those soaring highs and extra grit alongside that persistent gallop. The more sporadic vocals provided by Anastasia Megalokonomou also greatly shape the atmosphere on a couple songs, giving life to the folk interludes like “Pagan Fire” and some backing grandeur on the already colossal closing nine minutes of “When The Angels Bleed,.”
But even when the core band is left to their own devices, they manage to get some pretty incredible songs out of it. “The Oath” is another fast-paced number that puts in the album’s most pounding chorus. The title track and “Fortress of Shadow” also stand out as epic mid-tempo numbers whose determined trudges and evocative choruses nearly dip into power-doom territory.
Overall, Achelous’s already solid power metal reaches some serious new heights with Tower of High Sorcery. There’s a bit of underdog appeal in knowing the band still has its limitations to sort out, but they’ve never sounded this commanding between the more potent atmosphere and some of the best hooks I’ve heard from this side of things in a good while. I’ve never even read the Dragonlance series and this does a pretty good job of making it sound pretty badass.
