One of my most anticipated releases of the year, ‘Where Gods Live and Men Die’ does not disappoint. Capilla Ardiente is easily the most interesting doom metal band in the world these days, as they incorporate all the traits of the genre, but manage to put their own spin on them with elements of doom/death – though those are admittedly limited on their new album – and epic tradtional heavy metal. All of their material so far has been an adventure to listen to, and their third full-length is no different. It is a must-hear for anyone who likes slower metal.

Compositionally, it would not be a stretch to call Capilla Ardiente a progressive doom metal band, were it not for the Solitude Aeturnus clones that usually carry that moniker. The four long songs – only ‘As I Lie on the Summit’ stays under the ten-minute mark, and only just – go through a lot of different movements, almost as if they are the metallic equivalents of symphonic poems, full of subtle tempo and atmosphere changes, as well as truly monumental riff work. On top of that, Felipe Plaza Kutzbach once again proves that he possesses the ultimate clean voice for mournful metal.

There aren’t any truly funereal dirge sections on ‘Where Gods Live and Men Die’ like there occasionally were on the band’s incredible debut full-length ‘Bravery, Truth and the Endless Darkness‘. However, the album is such a dynamic work that this does not matter. For one, the sense of desperate anger in Capilla Ardiente’s music remains. Also, while ‘Where Gods Live and Men Die’ might spend more time in lower mid-tempo territory than any of its predecessors, bassist Claudio Botarro Neira’s adventurous songwriting makes it easy to just zone out and let the music take you on the journey it wants to take you on.

Because the songs on ‘Where Gods Live and Men Die’ are written as movements or chapters in a story rather than traditional songs with a clear verse-chorus structure, the album is best experienced listened to in one setting. Every transition makes sense, though. For example: when opening track ‘Envenomed’ moves from a surprisingly melodic guitar solo by Julio Bórquez to a haunting quieter section that seamlessly morphs into an ultra-doomy climax, it becomes clear that Botarro Neira carefully constructs his compositions. ‘The Hands of Fate Around My Neck’ is the most accessible, traditional doom metal track here, while ‘Now Here. Nowhere.’ has the most recognizable riffs.

Once there was a time when it was unimaginable that the best band, the best singer, and the best composer in doom metal would be from a country like Chile. Yet, that is exactly what’s happening now. Capilla Ardiente just does doom metal right. So right, in fact, that people who are intrigued by the characteristics of the genre, but bored by the way most doom metal bands employ them might find exactly what they need on ‘Where Gods Live and Men Die’. It is another masterpiece of relatively slow, adventurous heavy metal that doesn’t really sound like anyone else. Highly recommended.
