“Hymns of the Sick” is Chicago death metal band’s first full length album released in 1997, and while Deaden wasn’t exactly reinventing the wheel here by any means, I think this is some really good material presented in a really sick manner.

There’s something about Deaden’s sound that is so appealing to me, it’s really grimy mid tempo death metal, the guitar tone is sharp, most of the riffs are fun to listen to and the mixing sounds dense and bass-y. There are actually two different vocalists on this album, I think they both preform high screams and low gutturals so it’s kinda difficult to distinguish their vocals from each other on the record, their vocals sound great layered on top of each other though. There are plenty of gross samples describing scenes of murder, cannibalism, and necrophilia.

Even with how grimy this record is, it doesn’t stop some of these songs from being pretty damn catchy. Specifically the first half of this album, after the fourth or fifth song, this album starts to lose some memorability and replay-ability. My favorite songs on this album definitely have to be the first two, “Ejaculation to a Rotting Orifice” and “Sculpted in Flesh”. They both start off with gross samples and they both have catchy riffs. “Ejaculation to a Rotting Orifice has these parts where everything just halts so all you hear is either bass guitar or a reverb-y guitar and then it kicks right back up into heavy chugging riffs and screaming. “Sculpted in Flesh” has this part where one of the vocalists says “take a look, tell me what you see, there’s a bouquet of dicks” and that part always gets stuck in my head for some reason and gives me a good chuckle.

Overall I think this is a great album and a must listen for anyone who loves the grosser and more twisted acts in metal. This album reminds me a lot of other Illinois death metal bands that use repulsive sexual themes, so if you like this album I highly suggest bands like Lividity and Waco Jesus.
