A full moon hangs in the blackened sky, wisps of cloud partially obscuring the glowing orb for a brief moment as lupine howls drift across the empty, shadowy streets below. Glowing eyes stare out from gloomy alleyways, the sound of heavy breathing and scraping of claws on concrete getting increasingly louder as they slowly emerge from the darkness...

...is something that sounded good in my head but as you’ve probably already lost interest by now, I’ll stop fucking around and just shout Powerwolf very loudly at you instead.

Oh yes, fellow lycanthropes, it’s wolf-obsessed German Power Metal time again. Which of course means another round of elaborate costumes and grey face-paint, more expensive music videos, and more riffs than you can throw a sexy nun at. Their ninth studio album (tenth if you include last year’s compilation record Interludium), Wake Up The Wicked (Napalm Records) sees the hairy Saarbrücken quintet simply doing what they do best – delivering cathedral-sized riffs to their howling faithful – and coming up with the goods yet again.

Right from the off, rip-roaring opener “Bless ‘Em with the Blade” takes no prisoners, frontman Attila Dorn‘s voice soaring with gravel-throated intent while guitarist brothers Charles and Matthew Greywolf drive the song forward. ‘Sinners of the Seven Seas’ follows hot on its heels, and if the accompanying video to the towering second single is to be believed, then the Spanish Conquistadors were also werewolves. Of course, they were.

The fierce but cheeky “Kyrie Klitorem” comes from the same naughty place as “Coleus Sanctus” and “Resurrection by Erection” while the upbeat “Heretic Hunters” delivers an upbeat Celtic punch with a ridiculously catchy hook. One of the album’s undoubted highlights, ‘1589’ is the story of farmer, serial killer, and incestuous cannibal, Peter Stumpp. Known to his friends as The Werewolf of Bedburg, Stumpp confessed to killing and eating two pregnant women and at least fourteen children, one of them his own son. Well, it’s one way of cutting down on birthday presents, I suppose.

The anthemic “Viva Vulgata” finds Dorn on top form again, keyboard player Falk Maria Schlegel leaving his mark in suitably Gothic fashion while drummer Roel van Helden continues to batter the living daylights out of his kit. The pounding title track gnashes its way into your head like the vindictive little earworm it is before the Sabaton-esque “Joan of Arc” unleashes yet another instantly catchy melody you’ll still be trying to shake off weeks from now. The beginning of a final three-pronged assault, the epic bombast of “Thunderpriest” is launched at you from the vestibule while the equally masterful “We Don’t Wanna Be No Saints” features a children’s choir before the album climaxes with the dramatic, Celtic infused “Vargamor.”

Saucy lyrics, historical reference points, grandiose melodies and snappy choruses, Wake up the Wicked does exactly what it promises, and more. Werewolves and vampires and priests, oh fuck!
