Started in 1976 as a Deep Purple cover band, the four school friends, singer and guitarist Jake Burns, guitarist Henry Cluney, bassist Gordon Blair and drummer Brian Faloon discovered punk for themselves in 1977. After Blair left the band he was replaced by Ali McMordie, the name "Highway Star" no longer seemed appropriate for a snotty punk band and from then on they were called Stiff Little Fingers. BBC DJ legend JohnPeel became aware of the band, for the single "SuspectDevice" he got a sales deal with RoughTrade for STF and the black disc went over the counter 30,000 times within a very short time. The second single "Alternative Ulster" developed into a true punk anthem not only in Northern Ireland.
The first long player "InflammableMaterial" (still released on Rough Trade) achieved gold status in the UK with over 100,000 sales, the band moved to London and signed a record deal with the major label Chrysalis Records and played on both "Rock Against Racism" and the very popular BBC -Chart show "Top OfThe Pops". STF were the stars of the scene alongside bands like The Clash, Damned, Jam or the Buzzcocks. In November 1980, the band accepted an invitation from the WDR-Rockpalast to the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund for the first time, and nine years later a second appearance followed at the WDR in the Düsseldorf Philipshalle. Now both concerts come in one box, the 1980 concert on CD and DVD, 1989 only on CD, as there are no recordings of them.
