...( Opis )...

NWOBHM was a huge fucking scene, and I shouldn’t have to tell anyone how massive its effect on metal as a whole was. Taking basically just Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, and whatever rock was floating around at the time and turning it into a jumping-off point for the whole genre was nothing short of monumental. But, while many remember names like Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, and Angel Witch, there are unsurprisingly many more that have been forgotten. There were quite a few second-generation NWOBHM bands that started off after and likely because of the progenitors, but of those practically none are well-known today (that Cloven Hoof are one of the most popular should tell you something). Chasar, formed in 1982, quickly put out their debut the next year on American Phonograph; according to M-A this is the only metal record the label released. I guess Chasar were another victim of poor distribution, but it’s also true that they had a very unorthodox sound for NWOBHM which could have made metalheads skeptical. In a nutshell, while they're still very definitely NWOBHM, and the old style of dirty rock shines through on songs like "Gypsy Roller" and “Deceiver”, a really big influence is clearly Rush. I can hear echoes of Alex Lifeson in the guitar, and the way they occasionally use keyboards (“Visions of Time”, for example) is also a telltale sign. Plus, the way the bass is given an important part is very atypical for NWOBHM (Iron Maiden notwithstanding) and points back towards the Canadians. A lot of the songs are also quite lengthy, “Underground” clocking in at a whopping 9 minutes; not terribly unusual as Cloven Hoof certainly had their share of longer songs too, but definitely a symptom of the prog influence in Chasar’s case. Now, the trio that makes up Chasar certainly isn’t as instrumentally talented as Rush’s, but they manage to convey a level of youthful energy and enthusiasm in a way that sets them apart from the usual prog rock intellectual pretension. Some lengthy guitar solos do crop up, though, and far from being masturbatory or dull, they add greatly to their songs (again “Visions of Time” provides us with an apt example, along with “Lights”). Singer Alex Pollock is of the typical NWOBHM school of bellowing, but he does it very well; on “Kings” especially he displays a great range of emotion. The level of compositional complexity is also toned down quite a bit from what Rush were known for, with a focus on verse/chorus structures with long sections, but rather than being detrimental the more laid-back, open feel gives the atmosphere room to grow.

All of the songs work well, though a few less so than others; “Destiny” and “Lights” drag a bit, as does the lengthy “Underground”, though all have many redeeming features. Still, the greatness of Chasar shines through on “Visions of Time” and “Kings”, and I do not exaggerate when I say they’re near the top of my favorites list for all of NWOBHM. The atmosphere they craft is both delicate and transcendent; unlike a lot of metal, it’s very uplifting, and not in a violent way. This again strengthens the comparison to Rush and prog rock in general. “Kings” especially is a bittersweet, epic, balladesque ode to King Arthur; that main picked melody is easily up there with those of Manilla Road. It’s very interesting to see a band like Chasar take elements from places like Rush and earlier NWOBHM and craft something new with the best of both worlds, and it’s even more interesting to see them succeed so well in their endeavor.
