...( Opis )...

Blasphemy is a bit of an odd band. They started out Canada in 1989, released a demo, two full-lengths, and then just seemed to disappear for a while.

But, in 2001, they seemingly made a comeback. With a whole new live album, and seemingly touring again, were the originators of bestial war metal truly back?

Well, no, not fully, but they certainly keep coming back.

Despite the title, this is actually Blasphemy's FOURTH live album, rather than 5th, unless some 4th one isn't listed on the archives and just randomly exists somewhere.

But that's beside the point, how's the music?

Well, I'm a sucker for live war metal, it's so underground and niche, that many bands don't bother with live appearances at all. However, Blasphemy has really delivered with this set of 14 satanic ass-pounders that will set you six feet into Lucifer's asshole itself.

One thing I dislike about this album (and Blasphemy as a whole really) is that they haven't released much studio material. You need more then just 2 albums and a demo to get by on 4 live releases, and while Blasphemy has got by just fine, I believe they should get to work on a new studio album before putting out another live album like this. It's what keeps this score from a 90 above and it's very disappointing to me.

However, the band performs well as always, I'm actually very impressed that they're still performing as well as on the nearly 30 year old studio albums now. It's rather impressive. Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds' vocals hit the mark and sound raspy and deadly as ever. His voice hits a rather harsh note, which is good for Blasphemy's style of music.

I'm big on drums, usually, and they more then suffice for this release. Of course, due to Blasphemy being an older band, and this being a live record, it's a normal drumset. No electronic stuff here. That's good in my opinion, as while electronic (and even some drum machines) drums can sound good, natural drums have that "feel" to them, and that is showcased no better then on the final song of the concert, "Ritual".

Blasphemy usually ends their concerts with Ritual, and as a closer, it works well enough, and Vaz, while a session drummer on this, does wonderful work of each song, but especially Fallen Angel, Ritual, and Weltering In Blood. The cymbals have a big "clang" to them that I just love to hear, good cymbals are surprisingly not the most common, however they picked perfect cymbals for this release.

Caller of the Storms and Deathlord of Abomination and War Apocalypse's riffing isn't the most special or technical stuff out there, even in war metal terms, however I don't think Blasphemy would be Blasphemy if it didn't have those violent caveman riffs. Absolute riff hellfest and I adore it. The guitar tone is also a bit fucky at times, not my absolute favorite, but I can excuse it. It is a live release, after all.

At the end of the day, Desecration of Belo Horizonte: Live in Brazilian Ritual - Fifth Attack is a good live release from Blasphemy which does exactly what it says it does; gives you a taste of war metal in front of a crowd. I'd recommend listening to Live Ritual: Friday the 13th as your first Blasphemy live experience before this one, but after that, give this one a try, if you feel like it.

-Someone who's rather grateful, and somewhat dead inside.
