I was ecstatic after watching this DVD. There were lots of rumours going around the Montreal scene after Arie and Remy left the band that Bart was a crappy guitar player and couldn’t keep up. Here we have first hand proof that those rumours were wrong, as Bart, along with the rest of Quo Vadis, absolutely nails every note with the highest level of precision and power.

The sound on this DVD is great, due in large part to all the mics having been split at the source, so one set of signals was going to the Medley mixing board for the in-house sound, and the other was going outside to a van and being mixed specifically for the DVD. No compromise was made on either side.

Lots of buzz was also occurring over whether or not live bassist Forest could pull off the insane fretless lines laid down on Defiant Imagination by the renowned Steve DiGiorgio. Well, Forest delivered, playing the parts flawlessly and seemingly effortlessly, and that after having opened up the show with his own band Augury!

The performance also features live keyboards courtesy of Roxanne Constantin, a live choir, a cello soloist, and actors and interpretive dancers to capture the “visual aspects of the music”. I thoroughly enjoyed all these elements. Some people complain that the dancers were a bit cheesy and could have been cut, but either way, this is something that is not seen often so props to Quo Vadis for bringing some innovation and artistry to their show. Look out also for guest appearances by Oscar Souto of Anonymous and Alex Auburn of Cryptopsy.

As a whole, the set list is amazing. You don’t notice all that much that old frontman Itman’s songs are not present, because with the newest album Quo Vadis have more than enough material to play a long set. The focus lies more on the newer material but there are also a few forays into the older stuff, and it’s great to hear it interpreted by the new line-up.

As for DVD extras, I can honestly say I have not watched the show from the “extra drum angles”, nor am I interested in doing so. I would have loved a short documentary or even a brief backstage interview before they went on stage instead. Not such a big deal though, as the main feature is long enough to fully satisfy your Quo Vadis cravings.
